- The Academy Award-winning director was honored by the University of Southern California, 30 years after founding the school's Shoah Foundation and releasing the landmark Holocaust film "Schindler's List."
Steven Spielberg denounced the “rise of extremist views” on Monday and called for people to use “the power of empathy” against antisemitism or anti-Muslim hate. He also spoke out on behalf of both those killed by Hamas terrorists on Oct. 7 and innocent women and children killed in Gaza.
“We can rage against the heinous acts committed by the terrorists of Oct. 7 and also decry the killing of innocent women and children in Gaza,” the filmmaker and Shoah Foundation founder said as he accepted the University of Southern California’s highest honor, the University Medallion. “This makes us a unique force for good in the world. And here’s why we are here today to celebrate the work of the Shoah Foundation, which is more crucial now than it even was in 1994.”

Actually there were no Palestinians, in the sense you mean, until 1964, when Yassir Arafat and Soviet propagandists created the term to apply to the refugees in the West Bank (and Lebanon and Syria) Before 1948, when it was a general geographic area, ANYONE who dwelt in the British Mandate was Palestinian The original PLO charter -- 1964 -- specifically disclaimed the West Bank because it was now Jordan. After 1967 that provision was removed because...Jews now had it!! Here are some quotes from Arab leaders. President Hafez al-Assad said to Arafat:
"there is no Palestinian entity, there is only Syria! You are an integral part of the Syrian people and Palestine is an integral part of Syria. Therefore it is we, the Syrian authorities, who are the real representatives of the Palestinian people.” In 1977, Zuheir Muhsin, a senior member of the PLO’s Executive Council, said in an interview with a Dutch Newspaper:
“There are no differences between Jordanians, Palestinians, Syrians and Lebanese. We are part of one people, the Arab nation. Look, I have relatives with Palestinian, Lebanese, Jordanian and Syrian citizenship. We are one people. Just for political reasons we carefully subscribe to our Palestinian identity, because it is of national importance for the Arabs to encourage the existence of the Palestinians against Zionism. Yes, the existence of a separate Palestinian identity is only there for tactical reasons. A Palestinian state is a new means of continuing the struggle against Israel and for Arab unity.
Beginning in 1919: Prince Faysal . “I assure you, according to the wishes of its people, Palestine will be a part of Syria.” Three months later, Faysal wrote General Edmund Allenby that Palestine “is an inseperable [sic] part of Syria.” Faysal was hardly alone in this view. His rival, Shukri Ghanim, an advocate of French rule in Syria, declared Palestine “incontestably the southern portion of our country.” Two General Syrian Congresses identified Palestine by name as an integral part of Syria. You are speaking about a myth, something that did not happen. Jews had a continuous presence and other land was purchased at highly inflated prices. Then in ‘48 they won a defense war begun by 5 Arab nations that was a war of annihilation, founding their ethnically and religiously diverse nation. And of course, as you know, 80% of Mandate Palestine became the Arab nation of Jordan.
Why would anyone be unduly concerned about the situation in 1948, with 500,000 Jews, many of them indigenous, the rest being refugees with nowhere else to go, proclaiming the existence of the state of Israel? In 1947, Indian Muslims escaped much less systematic persecution and moved north, changing what's now Pakistan't biggest city from 50 per cent Hindu in 1947 to just 0.86 per cent Muslim now.
In 1948, the Jews claimed a half share in a patch of land just 14,100 sq kms, of which only 4,100 sq kms was habitable. The other half share belonged to 480,000 non-Jews, mostly Muslims.
Do you have ANY idea how many times the 2,050 sq km "Jewish" share of habitable land would fit into Pakistan?
And then in terms of Israel's conduct since 1948, can you think of ANY episode in Israel's history that equates to Pakistan's conduct in the Bangladesh genocide (1971)?

Newsweek Mar. 25 has his latest article. You may have also seen the statistical analysis showing that the Hamas reported numbers are completely manufactured.
To put it in simpler terms: war is sad, can be tragic, but not a massacre.

The use of the term genocide where it does not apply diminishes its value. Hamas has expressed its desire to kill Jews. They have expressed their wish to eradicate Jews from land that Hamas hopes to control. In contrast, Muslims and Christians live and practice their religion in Israel. Palestinian population has increased whereas “genocide” would lead to the opposite.
