Hey Curtis its Martin from Czechia. 100% agree with election that does not realy matter who wins. Our lives are our and we are the writers of our story. I found you couple of years ago and thanks to you I know what is it to live more self sufficient. Like thanks to you I decided to live off grid, I have 36 solar panels and 50.4kWh battery about 18 months now, I have two ponds which one is also swimming pond... Just wanna say you have kick started me to do something and I thank you for inspiration :-) take care

Curtis… I found you when you were ‘painting’ your previous home and while I have not religiously watched every one of your videos since then… I’ve been following you plenty… I had a house in the city just like yours that I planned to farm like youprior to 2020, hoping to eventually do what you have done… move off grid. I never got the farm going on that property but I learned a lot… then I finally moved off grid in July 2024… I’ve got three power stations… a ‘regular’ inverter (separate component) system with 2500 watts of panels a small cistern and a wood stove. The power stations are providing everything I need in terms of elec right now. The property already had a comfy little shack… But I just put a shed and a new tiny home on the property. Still living in the shack for a few more months. I’m prepping garden beds all winter and can’t wait to completely exit… but I am building. I was both happy for you and a bit jealous at the same time, when you were able to move off grid. But I know how hard you worked to make that happen. I could have done some things different and been here sooner. I finally made it! I had to get a job though. But, hopefully by the end of 2025, I’ll be nearly autonomous. Gotta pay for my phone and my truck and various supplies, as long as those things are available to me. It’s such a joy to be living out here in the wilderness.
Today we put in a bid for land, I canned beef bone broth, finished purifying my tallow, fed my sour dough starter that I started from dates. I’m baking regular bread soon. I’ll be breaking down a pork loin into meals in a bit here. I’m kind of listening to what’s going on in the USA right now but it’s not going to cripple me and what I need to get done in my house.
I moved to Puerto Rico 🇵🇷, We have a hybrid solar system. We produce about 40k daily depending on on the sun shining. Even cloudy days we get enough. Our homestead produces year round crops and our chickens are free range .
@ land is definitely available in the West Coast, I recommend finding a flat enough area to build as well as 90 to 100 feet elevation. Water is not an issue if you don’t mind setting up a thousand gallon tank. A solar system is a must for off grid , size will depend on your need and usage
Greenhouses are amazingly warm in the coldest of temps, as long as the sun is shining. Wish us luck here in the U.S. If things go well here, that can spread northward. 😊
I love watching your winter wonderland videos in my (australian) summer. What I would give for -3 degree temperatures right now. Instead it's 38 degrees with deafening cicadas roaring from dawn til dusk. Can't wait for winter! I only wish we got snow like you. The best we get is ice
Hey Curtis. Interesting that you are referring to the orientation of your greenhouses as in which way the side walls are facing. The correct way is that the orientation is in which direction the end walls are aligned. Just something to point out to the other viewers. Your passive solar greenhouse is oriented east to west. Your chicken greenhouse is oriented north to south.
Thanks for the video. Can you please do your homesteading series for Wisconsin and Minnesota? I would also really enjoy learning more about your house!
Speaking from experience, you may want to put up chicken wire to prevent the chickens from pecking the sides of the greenhouse. They try to peck at the water droplets and end up putting holes in the sides of the plastic.
Hey Curtis big fan, bought your urban farmer book and followed you since around 2014. Curious but how much did that little greenhouse with the chickens cost you? I would love to build one. THANKS and God bless you and your lovely family brother. From the USA with love.
In our family greenhouse business, we always ran the high tunnels North to South; just like yours. I need to start thinking about my zones. Good setup!
Good to know… I’ve got a ditch on my property that runs north to south… I want to turn it into a walapini… i was concerned that it needed to be east to west… but I’ll build those in another area.
@OfftoShambala I am looking at a small backyard sunken greenhouse. Most try to maximize solar gain to the winter solstice on any kind of geothermal thing, but if the earthwork is already in place and the sun looks good, it just might work.
Have you considered mounting a concrete vibrator motor on the greenhouse to automatically knock the snow off? They are quite cheap, I am not sure if it will work, just an idea.
2:38 I see you kept the big fir next to the chicken coop. I hope you get some crow to nest in the fir in the summer to protect your chickens from the deadly red tail hawk.
Funny you say that. There's actually two of them and they guard the flock in exchange for some feed. It's a pretty cool symbiotic relationship. They take less feed than a chicken but protect the area really well.
@@offgridcurtisstone I enjoy to heard that you have to crows as guardian. A nice little feather couple. I hope they got chicks next summer. For the feed, crow never eat exes food, when they are full, they hide the food for later on. I'm living in a city with lot of tree in the neighbourhood and I use the crows as alarm system again thieves and drones. They alert the neighbourhood when a thieves try to break in. The crows can memories people faces and remember It even 5 years after only saw It once. So they are pretty good. I fed them with cashew, peanuts and walnuts. For them nut are really valuable because It's taste good for many days in the wild if the squires did not find them before. But in the city, the crows, have many cache on the street light where the quirel can reach.

Good morning Curtis and friends! To my American friends, let’s not rest on our laurels-or alternatively whine about the results-let’s get to work! First step, extend a hand and break bread. Don’t hate your neighbor. We’re gonna need each other.

Do you have all your catch ponds positioned to catch the melt off naturally or do you push it closer to the ponds with your excavator throughout the winter?

An interesting thing about chickens is that they don't have receptors for capsaicin, the substance in chillies that makes them hot.
RESPECT TO YOU BROTHER :)

I've never noticed them doing that. Been 3 winters in there.

I don’t need to push the snow in a particular direction to make that happen. The natural topography does it on its own.
