We can hear a bit of Ennio Morricone-ish music in this theme, making us think of Western movies, which would normally give an epic feel to this song. But with the rest of the instrumental it appears to be more melancholic.
I laugh when I see or hear people say things like Spielberg, Cameron, the Russo brothers, etc, are master directors. They're children compared to Park Chan-Wook. Oldboy is a true great, and a great score to boot.
I swore I never heard the beat in the movie. Maybe it was drowned out by the fighting in the slums, fighting in the Hallway. The only thing I heard was the somber tone, the depressing and sorrowful melody and the horn that rung through the scenes as Oh Dae-Su beat up and possibly even maimed his attackers.
I dated a girl from Korea once. This is the first movie we watched together. It's only later I discovered she had a father complex and it made sense why she called me daddy after I watched this.

What a coincidence, I was just hearing requiem forna dream theme before this clip.
This hits so different because it's basically like the music in a supposed-to-lose fight, but he overcomes and pulls through in the end.

This wasn’t the theme played in the corridor. What was played was a remixed version with a more subtle beat.
