Native Flintstoner here. I was born and raised in Flint. Graduated from Kersley in ‘91. I hung on until 2000, Then I had to go. I couldn’t raise my family or send my kids to public school anymore. It’s such a shame and so sad to see what has befallen a once great place. It was a wonderful place to grow up in the ‘80s. I blame a lot on the UAW constantly demanding more every year. Big ups homie!

I don’t disagree, I don’t debate politics and such anyway as I don’t know that much, besides respect others is important. I’d just add that it’s difficult to say one thing is at fault, UAW, is a factor but I see the federal government as a large contributor. GM is probably given a lot more credit for Flints conditions than they actually earned, it is a corporate entity. It is a profit driven company and you see the upper middle management out of jobs as well. also the 80’s being so infamous for the self centered attitude. Society is a product of the people and their values. There weren’t many values I could see but I always believed Flint was just about 30 years or so ahead of the rest of the country.

    • @jaystubblefield9287

I lived there for 40+ years and the only reason Flint isn't a complete wasteland is because of the UAW. I encourage all to watch "Roger and Me" to get the full context of the harm GM, and its subsidiaries, did to Genesee county both economically and environmentally. Once GM filed bankruptcy in 2008 it released them from $500 million of environmental cleanup liabiltiy.

Flint started a rapid decline in the 70s. As a boy visiting my grandparents on Roosevelt in the 60s, I never liked Flint. Crime was high, and the auto industry started leaving. The water was always bad, even in 1962. My grandparents had a constant brown ring around the edges of the sink, tub and toilet. The water smelled of sulfur.

Flint is a dead company town. You only need a fraction number of jobs to run a auto plant as you did in the 1960s. Even if the auto manufacturing jobs come back the city will never be in it's glory days again. Why save flint? For the nostalgia of retiring workers who plan on moving out of the state? Millennials & Gen Z should focus on communities where if one company goes under it doesn't turn it into a former rust belt manufacturing town.

At one point in time everyone knew everyone in Clarkston michigan, then a whole crap load of people move to Clarkston there was a massive amount of Land development, suddenly there was no commonality amongst the people of clarkston. It turned into a bunch of unfamiliar faces. That's one thing Flint has that I missed so much for so long, at least where I am in Flint, everyone pretty much knows everyone. When we first moved here we had neighbors introducing themselves right away, made all kinds of good friends. Anything can happen anywhere! There was all kinds of dirt happening in Clarkston all the time, however it would get cleaned up/swept under the rug before they'd allow the news to catch wind of it or allow it to be put in the news paper. Don't be misled by exaggerated statistics and the fake news! Just go watch the movie American beauty with Kevin Spacey lol! It's a great example of middle class suburbia 😂😂😂😂😂😂. They paint such a pretty picture on the outside, but boy oh boy! If anyone ever knew what was going on behind closed doors! Lol! I've noticed most people in Flint are real! In those little Richie Rich towns, there is a ton of fake ass phony people. I think I'd rather be murdered by a crazed stranger in FLINT , then have a bunch of phony/ fake ass friends in a uppity rich town. 😂😂😂😂😂😂

Just for perspective about the schools-Southwestern may be technically a magnet school in name, but it's the defacto high school after the reconciliation of the other high schools in the city into one building. You could maybe argue it was magnet when I went there in the early-mid 2000s, but in practice other highschools like Northern/Central had as many specialized courses (not to mention the county Skill Center that many of us went to for more career specific courses) and students would be bussed between these schools during the day as necessary.

Flint will never change unless the people start changing themselves. I worked in a Flint school for about 5yrs and the parents of these kids are absolutely terrible and shameful. Obviously there are good people in Flint but there are A LOT of shitty parents that aren't paying attention to their kids. You could dress the city up as nice as you'd like but until the north side of Flint is cleaned up it will always be like this.

Chris, thank you so much for posting these videos. I was born in Flint in 1957; my father had a house on Jennings Road halfway between Pierson Road and Pasadena. I graduated from Hamady High School in 1975, and I worked at the Chevrolet Flint Engine Plant until 1979 when I was laid off. I moved to California in early 1980, but, Flint has always held a special place in my heart, it is so sad to see what has become of this town.
The last time that I was there was the fall of 1984. I would love to see more videos of the area where my fathers house was, Jennings between Pierson and Pasadena, and a drive by Hamady High School. I looked online and as far as I know the High School is still open.
I have a High School buddy who now lives in Northern Michigan, but, every now and then he still goes to Flint, he tells me how a lot of the stores/restaurants in our area are long gone. Again, thanks for the videos, and please do consider making a video of my old neighborhood...

@@Henry_Jones career wise, yes, it has been very good to me, but, I still miss all of the green landscape and the lakes in Michigan. When I first moved here I brought my boat with me, but, I sold it shortly after arriving because there are no decent lakes within driving distance from where I live, and the ones that are around the people were just nuts on the water. And now, if you have been following what is going on politically here in California, it's time to leave.

Hamady High is still there. It is mostly African-American in make up now. Their football team is currently making a deep run in the state high school football playoffs in their division. The stretch of Jennings between Pierson and Pasadena isn't as bad as much of Flint City as most houses are still standing but there are some vacant lots and businesses like "Bob's Garage". Clio Road and Pierson Rd aren't like they used to be with high crime and gang activity.

I was born in Flint in 1976. I went to Flint Northwestern High School. I have recently moved and I don’t see it getting any better. I really am amazed at how it has changed over the years. Raising a family there is not good. My advice is that if you can leave to do so. I recommend because it would give a brighter future for the up coming young. But this is just my opinion. There are no elementary, junior high or high schools left. I don’t know where the city is headed but I definitely now where it came from.

The pipes in Flint can't be fixed because car dependent cities rely on growth in order to fund infrastructure maintenance, and Flint continues to shrink, decreasing the taxpayer base year after year. People moving away after the water crisis obviously continued the feedback loop. There is a lot of heart in this community though and it can only get better from here. I hope they find a way to sustainably rebuild this area.

Job loss in the auto industry was in part due to the US Congress. Congress wanted to divest the USA of the Teamsters union, in doing so, other unions were also effected. Couple this with economic downturn and improvements in technology caused the quick erosion. NAFTA was the final nail in the job coffin ⚰️.

Grew up outside Detroit in the 50s my family coming from Tenn to there in the 30s for better job chances. I always sensed a hostility of native ganders to the mass influx of white and black southeners coming for jobs and changing what Michigan had been. Ethnic slurs were common then and I was a hillbilly, the Poles in Hamtramck polacks, and Italians/ other mediterranean the dagos/wops. There were two major school systems there, public and parochial, and while the public schools had the rare catholic, for sure the parochial had zero southern transplants. Recall when both Flint and Detroit rode high. And glad I made it out when I did.
