Excellent video. I am not a big fan of Apple, but the synths you can get on an ipad are quite decent and the connectivity is truly simple.
Had been searching for a tutorial and i got exactly the right one. This was really useful. Thanks a lot
Great. You did a good job for almost everyone here! I cannot think of any set-up that you did not come around. Thanks a lot :-)
Thanks for the clear demonstration. I was thinking of buying a ipad it it had this capability and you clearly demonstrating how easy it is. Thanks
Great demo! Thanks for sharing!
Just started thinking about using the ipad and your video basically answered a ton of questions I was having. Thanks so much! :)
Thank you so much for this tutorial video. It gives me so much insight. I'm just the biginner trying to learn how to connect and play with midi keyboard. Recently I bought Panda 61 key midi Keyboard and I have no idea how to connect it and what type of connector is needed to plug in in my Ipad. Now I have learned from this video, I will try and see and if it doesn't work I'll let you know. Thank you onceagain.
Bro thank you so much for uploading this video this has given me a better understanding on midi connections. Thank you.
Great video!!! so many questions answered in just one big explanation. Thanks for posting this
Thank You for the very practical tutorial. Greetings from Finland !
I use a Roland Duo-Capture 2EX for my iPad and PC, and I recommend it very highly. It works perfectly for both MIDI and audio.
VERY HELPFUL! Thank you Sir.
Really useful and needed at the moment , cheers for posting :)
I use a keystation Pro 88 with my iPad Pro. It works great!!! Great video.
Very useful indeed. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Thanks for posting this. Very well done.
The way you present it, its very good...
You do some really cool playing on those teeny keyboards. I prefer full sized keys, but do have one small Yamaha SHS-10R, which has really cool auto accompaniment algorithms in it.
Thank you for this. Now I know what little dongle I was missing- the camera connection kit!
Thank you man, incredibly informative video.
Thanks for sharing mate, this was exactly what I was looking for... :)
Thank you for this! I'm going to get a connector and use it to link garage band with my Roland EP 7 II
Great Vid. Keep em' coming

Thanks man! This helps a lot of folks. Nice work.
Hey that was great. Even though there was repetition, it was needed in order to demystify the different (but same!) set ups. Before I buy a midi controller I wanted to demystify how it’s done and you did that! Thanks a bunch, I am now a confidant buyer thanks to you! Much appreciated!
I know im asking randomly but does any of you know of a method to get back into an Instagram account?
I somehow lost my account password. I would love any help you can offer me
@Eden Jaxon Instablaster :)
@Bennett Tobias Thanks for your reply. I found the site on google and Im in the hacking process atm.
Looks like it's gonna take a while so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Bennett Tobias it worked and I finally got access to my account again. I am so happy!
Thanks so much, you really help me out :D
@Eden Jaxon Glad I could help :D
No worys, i figuered it out. Thank you for replying so fast, you the best
Thank you extreme useful and I can now use my iPad which is collecting dust to create so much more new sounds awesome stuff thank you for sharing.
cheers man. Super simple setup for a mini rig. Cheers =)
Awesome video, thanks for putting this up.
Awesome tutorial! Thanks for making the vid. :)
Thanks for the video very helpful
Awesome tutorial! Help a ton!
Great video! Thank you for sharing
Damn helpful video!!! IOS update just knocked out my Motif USB midi connection. Irig is the way to go I guess.
phanjazm j so I can’t do this anymore??
Awesome stuff. Could you do a video on how to get the sounds into Reason or Ableton from this stage ? Many thanks.
Great video!
Worth noting that the iPad Air series does not work like this. They do not provide enough power so one will need a powered USB hub or the connector with USB to Lightening AND with Lightening In (for external power to the connector).
Michael Schollert Hi, I now use an AIR 2 and still use the same Midi controllers, I do not own a powered hub, so it does work like this
Weird... I read it would not work with the Lightning to USB and a non-powered keyboard on the Air series. Tried it myself yesterday with GarageBand on my Air 2 with a cheap non-powered USB midi keyboard to no avail.
But then again; I am new to Apple and I might do something wrong.
I am waiting for my proper midi cable to connect the Yamaha DTX M12 as that does not work with the USB camera connector either.
Informative video. Thank you.
I've just bought an iPad to learn to use loopy pro and am looking for the best midi keyboard for my needs but most don't mention working with iPads, just Mac and windows so it's a bit confusing.
Any chance of a new video with newer controllers mentioned like the Arturia Keylab essential mk3 which I was considering but Arturia don't mention it working with iPads .
Thank you friend! Cool and useful video!
Thank you for this video!
Super tuto bravo cool !!!!
Thank you, for this graet work.
Thanks Doug your the man
good video thanks for the help!
thanks for this vid and all the others.
That’s a Great video thanks. What puzzles me now tho, is how you’re getting the sound into your mixer/amp if the lightning connector is used by the midi. Thanks
Or, these days one could use the Akai lpk 25 wireless, and lose the wires altogether. I’ve yet to find an app that this baby doesn’t recognize. I have a musical go-bag that contains the the lpk 25, my iPad, a wireless speaker & little else eise. It’s perfect for getting outdoors to get inspired by the changing seasons. Great video once again Doug!
Nice vid man
Please put Amazon affiliate links for what you use every time you do a how to video. Not only we want to help you but we want to use something which is used and trusted by you.
This is great! Is this all usable during a live show for backing tracks and sounds?
Great demo - Thanks. Any more on midi out into a synth from ipad apps? The reverse or opposite side of midi arrangement to your demo?
Hi, Doug. I have witnessed a very interesting phenomenon when I connected my keyboard to the iPad via the CCK today. First, although keyboard is supplied with power by an external source, I still got the pop up screen which said that "device requires too much power" (keyboard is Nektar Panorama P6). Second, what I did was that I connected it through USB hub, which wasn't even powered, and it worked! What the hell is going on?
Huge! Thanks a lot!
I have an old E-MU [creative] that I had to power it and use the midi connector going to a irig [the first on]. Reason the iPad kept giving me the device uses too much power. But I love it because of the 16 knobs and has a weighted keys.
Thank you for great and simple explenations. I wonder, how can I avoid draining my Ipad4 of battery when I hook it up to my keyboard?
this is great! how can I use this for live gigs through a keyboard amp?
Thanks for this great video! But I'm gonna hold on anything by Korg - had an absolutely nightmare with the NanoStudio!
Thanks for this. Very interesting! Q: since the output of the iPad is through a 3.5mm jack, does that limit/affect the quality of the audio you can output from it?
Thanks it really helped
Great and helpful video! I've got an Ipad air and I want to use it with my band. I want to buy a medium size controller ( max 49 keys). One I like very much is Alesis VI49, but Alesis support can't tell me if I could use it with the ipad! On the other hand, I like Novation Launchkey, and someone recomended me the Roland A300 pro. This one i s perfect for the size, but I prefer to have 16 pads and Alesis Keys look better. Any advice about what to choose? The main intention is simple chords and melodies, and launch effects from it.
I know for sure I will need teh camera connectiion kit. But should I get more gear with these controllers? Is it mandatory to get out the sound from the headphones output? Is the quality good enough?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Nice video. Could you go into a wee bit about how to route MIDI once it's in the iPad? I haven't really done very much of that.
Hi Peri, I will go into the darkness of iOS MIDI in more detail soon.
Thanks, all connected now. Live loops on g band are great. I can now play an instrument via midi okay but I can’t seem to play an instrument and view / control live loops at same time. Many thanks if you have any pointers to that.
Love your stuff mate. Always helpful. Do you ever find your iPad running out of power and if it was a live situation what would you recommend to power the iPad. I have a new camera connector and it allows for power in and USB
Thanks Richard, I never run out of power but then again I don't need to use the iPad in live situation, my friend Jakob Haq just made a really good video about powered USB hubs and connectors, you should check it out here ua-cam.com/video/irgM3Egd70c/v-deo.html also you may find his latest video useful too.
FYI ,some devices require a powered hub to work, although apple has a new usb3 to lightning.
FYI; want to try something real neat with the CCk, try this, use a powered hub and see how many devices you can send midi in to like gadget. I have done a jam session with 2 nanopads, a kontrol and keyboard
One of *the* most useful and instructive vids on UA-cam, well done Doug!
Hey man, Thank you for making this awesome tutorial!! Can you please gimme some app names that are alternative to GarageBand and Music Studio!? Thanks in advance :3 a list would be awesome.
Cubase maybe.
M0HX FL Studio Mobile
Groovebox
Great Video
very useful thank’s so much :-)
TY ...I'll try this sometime.
Excellent!
Thank you so much.
I have two different conectors and nothing works. Are that lightning conector special, I have an Iphone.
- I bought the "camera to lightning" and it worked at once, thanks!
For the first 5 minutes or so, the person called the controllers MIDI controllers. They are NOT MIDI, they are USB. He finally got around to talking about connecting a true MIDI keyboard to an iPad.
This is "The Person" it's called USB Core Midi, it is midi , what else is it, things advance, we aren't in the 80's any more, and trust me I wish we were, so do any computers have midi in/thru/out anymore..nope..they have USB Ports...ALL the Korg Micro MIDI controllers are only USB Midi, also Roland, Yamaha etc..etc...so if you choose to reply please let the viewers know what it is exactly....if it's not MIDI, which in essence is a Musical Instrument Digital Interface...it doesn't have to have a particular type of connection for it to be a MIDI interface....Google USB Midi...
Great share, thanks. Have a question does the audio only come out via the headphone jack? Reason I ask is because plugged in us. Kboard working but audio comes out via the jack unable to use in built speakers for some reason? Thanks in advance
Thanks for the information! Just thought I would add that if you have a newer Casio keyboard, you have to got to Settings, then Local and turn the Local setting off.
You have to do that with ALL the keyboards that have their own sound generation, here's a really cool tip though, if you just turn the volume down on the keyboard your using then you won't need to turn LOCAL off, if you just want to use the keyboard to control the iPad or VST, also this is nice if you want to blend the sound of both the hardware synth/keyboard with the iPad synth or VST, just use the volume on the master keyboard to get a nice mix for both, although that of course needs the output of the master keyboard to be routed somewhere, that's why you hear no sound from the Korg Microstation or the Akai synth I use in the video, although LOCAL is still on inside the settings because I don't have the audio output routed anywhere you won't hear any sound so no need to turn LOCAL off, good tip though and thanks for posting, cheers
No, I'm really pleased you added the information, it's all useful stuff when working in the dark and murky world of MIDI
This was very helpful
Cheers
Very Good Video.
God bless for this video...
Hi,
Great video.
I have a very old (about 30 years) technics keyboard with midi in and out.
I have a midi in and out to usb and an iPad 4.
If I bought the camera lightning lead would the iPad power the midi/usb lead as well as send and receive the midi signals?
Thanks
Thanks so much! I see you have the nanologue app.. does nanologue work with the last midi keyboard? just checking
Thanks--this was very helpful! Much appreciated! However, I tried connecting my Alesis vi49 controller, and even with a separate power supply connected, I got a message that said iGrand piano cannot work with the vi49 because it requires too much power--any idea how to fix this? Thanks!
Nice vid. Does using a USB keyboard drain much power from the iPad, and it looks although you have no issues getting sound out of the headphone socket to plug through an AUX input to get a louder sound?
Thanks!
Awesome video! Will the irig pro work with any midi keyboard? I have some older keyboards with midi, some of them from the 80's. Just wondering if irig pro is compatible with all midi keyboards? Thanks!
Class compliant can be important, and sometimes you will need a powered hub. Plus a hub makes ipad go much longer
Your right about the generic connectors ,the Apple ones are expensive but they are the only that work
i need your help sir first i thank you for this video cos it teaches alot .
now i have just buy my irig pro duo and i bought my keyboard which korg kontrol 49 i followed the instruction to connect
but right now i am struggling to get a sound from from keyboard and also my i pad is keep saying that the device is not compatable with ipad air 1 first generation . when i try to connect the word coming saying CONNECT , DISCONNECT LIKE THAT. even i bought all those apps but it still telling me the same thing , please me should i buy the cable you saying you talking about / please advise me what to do please . i need it please . thanks mate.
THANKYOU x
I have the 30 pin iPad and what wires would you recommend to to get the iPad to work with any keyboard midi, or usb!
Jon , the wires are the same, the adapter for your pad is the 30-pin as you say, so all the other cables are just like he said.
Greathelpthans
I notice that the sound coming out of your Ipad is very warm and clean is that DAC you have coming out the the headphones or what are you using and one more question can an Ipad work with Maschine-Tracktor?
Is awesome, gracias now I understand. I only speak spanish. Asi que Gracias es bueno para mi.
Thanks for your tutorials, very helpful. How do you get that great sound quality from your camera. I own dslr and wanna record my audio directly as I play my keyboard in my video recording. Tnx
The sound is all recorded via a Behringer 18/32FX mixer going into a Tascam DP008 recorder. No FX or EQ is added to the sound of the apps, so you hear what it's really like, then it's all synced to the video.
Hi. Thanks for the video. Could you please tell me how to connect the headphone socket to my Traktor Audio 10 soundcard. Thanks. Chris.
Sir, thanks for the info. I am having a problem with same KORG midi kbd you are showing in the video, and all the connectors are in place, but I don’t get it on, whereas when I connect it to iPhone it works . Please advise if anything need to be done in settings of my iPad Air 2.thanks
How much does all the software cost that you used ....or is there any free software that you would recommend ...great video thanks
Hiya pal.. Great vid! Just wondering can give me some advice ? I want to set up a home studio were I can produce and record my own tunes.Could you possibly tell me what I'd need to start up. I've got a budget of £1,000Cheers 👍
Hi, great video. My ipad shows an error message "this device uses too much energy". My keyboard dosn't come with ac adapter and i was thinking, maybe if i plug my keyboard to the computer (only to power it) and then with the midi out i plug it to the ipad might work... what do you think? thanks a lot.
Any luck with Roland GW7? Tried every way possible but couldnt make it work. Thanks!
thanks man this is so helpful.
ı have a question.ı have akai mini mk2 usb.and this ios cable for ipad, this is also have android type? and can u recommened android app for this.FL or free app ?thanks man.
