  • What sights, sounds, and smells remind you of home?
Growing up, certain aspects of my childhood always made home feel like home. Music playing in the house formed a thread that tied our family together. The food prepared in the kitchen nourished not only our stomachs but also our hearts. During the summers, we would spend time at my grandmother’s house. She would make us grilled cheese and hot tea with milk. We would eat that all day! Still to this day, when I make it for myself or for my kids, that combination creates a soothing balm that still calms me to this day. All of the sights, sounds, and smells of home created during my childhood established lasting memories I carried into adulthood to later share with my family and loved ones.

    I’m Puerto Rican…that’s not how I make rice😅
First, we rinse the rice with cold water til it’s not cloudy.
We heat up some oil in a pot, add onions or real garlic for flavor then when it’s hot
We throw the rice in and toast it and mix with the onions or garlic for a min or two then we add the water ratio and I add some salt for taste. We use Goya brand but, I love the long grain Jasmine rice.
And that’s how we do it!🎉

That sounds pretty much how we Haitians make rice. Instead we add oil and a green onion (sometimes I'll add garlic at this stage) but yes, we wash that rice until the water runs clear 😊 but I'll always have 'rice on tap' 😂

I can really cook, but this is something I messed up on as a teen and I never tried again. It's been boil-in-a-bag ever since. My bend toward perfectionism often robs me of the "try, try again," but TODAY... I made white rice, and it was the most fantastic thing I've done in a while. Thank you, Chrystal, for sharing this. I went back to an old, old failure, and made a brand new win. ❤

Hi Chrystal! Thanks for bringing us back to what really matters. When you’re really enjoying the moment you forget all about taking pictures. You remind me of my big sister she has the home that everyone drops in with short notice but somehow she always had something or enough for everyone to enjoy. 😊

I heard this while on my walk through the podcast but came over to UA-cam just to leave this comment:
This was such a BEAUTIFUL reminder of the BEAUTY of simple living. For those of us that aim to intentionally live this way, we STILL have to be reminded. If humans can do ANYTHING it’s complicating matters 😂🤣(the flesh!). Anywho, I Love you sister in Christ. I appreciate your gift to the world, your authenticity, and Love for LIFE(& the Lord)🙏🏼❤️

I'm gonna listen to classical music! Thanks for this reminder and being so real.
I struggled for a long time being so tired, washing up dirty dishes and being so slow late in the night.
When I finally released myself and gave grace to me, there were and still are some nights that I go to bed with dirty dishes.
    So freeing!

Thank you for this. Much needed after my last baby just graduated High School a few days ago and we had some friends over to celebrate that evening. As I looked over the sink full of dishes after everyone had left, all I could think of was what a blessing that day was to my Mama heart 🥹. For so long I never gave myself grace for not having a meticulously clean and organized house, but we've sure had fun with our babies! Now that they're all grown I get to see them taking what we've modeled and live it out in their own way. Kudos to you for being that person with white rice on hand, for it's not always easy being that go to person, but man is it rewarding! ❤
