I remember doing the 100% completion in FFX-2 and boy, let me tell you...the pain is real. I remember beating the game with only 99% completion and being confused why I didn't get the secret ending. Imagine my frustration when I discovered that the only reason I didn't get the 100% is I forgot to tickle a Moogle that was hiding out and crying behind some boxes near the beginning of the game. Of course, being a masochistic completionist, I went right into a new game to touch that Moogle and get my 100% completion. Sounds idiotic, and that would be a fair assessment, but these were the days before UA-cam, so if you wanted to see that extra 30 seconds of cutscene at the end, you better hunker down and give Square-Enix another 100 hours of your life.

I'm remember doing this on the PS2 and was following my physical guide for it. I didn't get that perfect ending because I missed a few things including the moogle but now I'm doing it on the PS4 following GameFAQ guides. I think it also has a trophy tied to it.
Now, I'm giving Square Enix 100 plus hours of my life with XIV, well worth it because everything is amazing but at least I don't have to follow extremely strict steps to get a perfect ending.

I was surprised not to see Hollow Knight on this list. To get the most difficult (also the coolest) ending you have to defeat every boss in the game normally, and then enter a special final area and defeat every boss (there about 40) in a row without dying, and many of the bosses are more difficult versions than those found in the normal game. There are two variants of this special ending so if you want both you have to do this process twice.

i LOVED collecting all 108 characters in Suikoden II and yes, i used a guide, obviously. i actually can't wait to replay both Suikoden I & II when they arrive on Steam, although it's been "coming soon" for so long now...
i'll never understand people's dislike of Riddler's trophies. i always loved them, in all 4 games, and i love the man himself, ESPECIALLY in Origins where he's smarter than in other 3 games and never gets caught by the end, which is why i prefer him in Origins. he's not overly cocky but is still himself in all his Riddler glory (by that i mean his personality which will always be a plus to me).
so to me getting the real ending isn't hard or tiresome or feeling like work at all in any Batman game. i'm the Bat in Gotham doing Bat things, who doesn't love that? Origins sequels please.

With Arkham Knight, the developers knew how evil they were being. Batman and Catwoman both comment about the tedium of the riddler trophies during the game. I really hope the Riddler does not feature in Suicide Squad. 2 other games I'd give dishonorable mentions to are Breath of the Wild: the true ending isn't hard, but very tedious (especially without a guide) to find the 18 memories needed to get the ending. Also, Bloodborne never really hints that you need to eat 3 pieces of umbilical cord to trigger the true final boss. Another one that basically requires a guide.

This list reminded me of my time playing Chrono Cross and it's multiple endings. The secret ending wasn't difficult for my friends to get. You had to play multiple times in order to get all the possible party members and in the final boss fight cast magic in a specific color pattern in order to get the secret ending. This magic was riliant on the boss's magic as well. My friends were able to do it, but the jerk boss would always do the opposite of what I needed at the end of the pattern. I never did get the ending, at least I saw it while my buddies were playing.

First off, that's Cross, not Trigger. Second, it's npt that hard to do. Since it's based on the color sequence and not the actual damage to the boss, you cast the required colors from level 1 grid spaces. This keeps the stamina consuption low and allows you to cast all the required colors in one go before the boss even gets a chance to do anything.

I started watching this video expecting some usual suspects for difficult endings. FFX-2 and Drakengard I expected to be higher, but was surprised to see then as low on the list as they are. Seeing Fear and Hunger, one of my favorite obscure indie games end up in a video like this was a wild treat for sure, and at Number 3 no less.

Which achievements are frustrating. If you tell me something like the iceberg lounge trophy, I can agree, even experienced players like me can struggle with it (it was the only one I kinda struggled with, but it only took me like 4 attempts), but there is nothing else that hard in the game. Every other trophy was an easy story related one, an easy miscellaneous one (like that trophy where you drift for 3 minutes then you get it, or glide for over 400 meters while less than 10m over the ground) , a side mission trophy (which is easy, and does include riddler), or a challenge map trophy (75% of them just for you beating challenge maps with a certain character or skin), which are the only challenging ones, and the only one I struggled with was the iceberg lounge one, which I still did in 4 attempts. I feel like anyone playing since AA, or AC should be able to do the same.

What’s more fun about Arkham knight is that if you want to fully complete it and unlock everything you have to 100% the game again on the hardest difficulty (which removes all enemy intention markers, as well as increases their damage, speed, and resistance). Luckily it doesn’t make you collect all of the trophies or complete the riddles so there’s that at least. But yeah it’s pretty remarkably stupid. And what you get is a version of the upgraded bat suit with a golden symbol. And probably some achievements, idk I haven’t finished it yet.

If you count the DLC, then technically the true secret ending of Kingdom Hearts 3 is extraordinarily difficult. Not, only do you need to defeat 13 superbosses, but you also need to defeat one of, if not the hardest bosses I've every played against. A boss so bullshit that it genuinely makes Malenia from Elden Ring look easy.

    Added gameplay:
Collect all lint pieces on every characters tunic.
Talk to every person EXCEPT for the third person you see in the game and the second to last one.
Collect all coins in the game, even the spare change in NPCs pockets.
    Ending:
Big huge sign that says "Thank you SO MUCH! We really appreciate what you did!"

Batman Arkham City's ending is so good, i really like Arkham Knight's ending too but Arkham City had all the twists at the end with Ra's being behind Protocol 10, the Joker being Clayface the whole time, actual Joker dying and Batman carrying him out. a real fairy-tale ending to what is an absolutely phenomenal game

MGSV has a true ending that can be a grind to get and requires you to do all main and side missions, bond with specific characters to 100%, listen to audiologs and has missable requirements that can ruin your run if you don't know what you're doing. Not to mention you're reward for doing all this is playing that whole tedious tutorial mission again for a new 1min cutscene.

Man that's not the first time I've heard that criticism of Jet Force Gemini, but I can't agree at all. A lot of levels were super easy to clear the tribals first go through, and then if memory serves you already backtrack naturally with different characters so you pick up more that way.
After that you only have a few missing levels, and maybe only need a guide for 1 or 2 tricky out the way spots. The game was big, but the levels were quite linear so it didn't seem a huge chore.
Imo its a shame if thats what stops this game getting all the plaudits, because it's right up with my all time favs. It had so much going for it; excellent graphics for the time, the standard amazing Rare soundtrack and humour, satisfying game/gunplay, tight controls, decent platforming and level design, and a fun, challenging final boss. It was such a fun mash up of styles, not forgetting the co-op and shmup sections with floyd, multiplayer... there's not much else like it and it really stands up with the heavyweights from that era.

The wrath of the righteous ending info is wrong. You only have to make a dialouge choice in the prologue. The knife and arrow are grabbed in chapter 1. And you can go to the final dungeon in that week of any in game year, so if you miss it you just have to spam rest at worst. (Not amazing, but not a lockout)

It's interesting. I think this was peak and/or end of the era (early 2000s) that people liked or didn't mind (cause it was new) collecting 100+ collectibles in games. Game guides (forums or physical) were still popular, UA-cam was blowing up but still I feel you could only rely on certain channels to give you the most thorough walkthroughs, and they too probably weren't being paid that much, still in school or working part/full time, so there were waits/delays

Nominations: Hades, BlazBllue, Dont Starve (Base)
Also, I agree with Jet Force Gemini. I never finished that game because I just couldnt wrap my head around it and got stuck after a while, plus, I dont recall there being much of a respawn system for the enemies, or at least it was a bad one, So a bulk of the game I was doing a lot of backtracking in mostly empty space going back and forth doing nothing because all the enemies were dead and couldnt find anything.
    As for my nominees:
Hades: Like Neir and the other games, youd be hard pressed to find a game where its good enough that you are able to convince players to play it multiple times in order to get the actual ending. Ghouls n Goblins is notorious for how irate it made people when they found out they had to play it a 2nd time and on a higher difficulty. Hades is already challenging and its a roguelite, and then to find out that you had to beat the game 7 times in order to get the actual ending...nothing short of a miracle and testament to how much people actually enjoyed it.
BlazBlue: Probably one of the most intricate stories in fighting games, and definitely one of the most confusing plots. The game had an arcade/story mode and really made you go through hell to try to find the true story behind each characters part in the world. You couldnt just beat characters like a normal fighting game. Oh no. You had to meet certain requirements in specific fights. While some fights you could just do normally, there were specific battles where you had to do conditions like; you actually have to lose against this character, you have to beat this one in a certain time frame, you have to beat this one while not taking much healthy, you have to beat this one with your finisher. You literally needed a guide to get the true story for each characters sessions, and it lead down roadmaps of branching stories so you had a number of different potential endings you could get, but only a handful lead to the true ending, and you really needed to research to know how to get them because you would never know without a guide or just absolute dumb luck. And theres no way you were getting that lucky for ALL the characters.
Dont Starve (the base game, not Together): A pretty harsh survival game, and despite it seeming like another endless survival title, there actually is a way to access a sort of story mode in this game, but you have to find it. You have to collect multiple relic pieces and assemble them at a portal that will lead you to realms that are seemingly the same as the one you were just playing except each one has its own harsh conditions and challenges. You have to do the same thing and journey around collecting those relic pieces hidden throughout the world and gather them at another portal and use it to go from realm to realm. The worst part is that not only does it get harder and harder each time, but you have to start over with your survival each time, taking only about 4 items with you as a head start on your journey. However, any health, hunger, or sanity you lost isnt recovered when you go from one to another which means you could already be starting low and just have to make due. Surviving each time with the game getting actively more challenging about 5+ times until you finally make it to the end.
