  • Peter Scherk is an international renown IPO / IGP / Schutzhund competitor, trainer and WORLD CHAMPION 3 X, an unheard of feat. In this podcast I sit down with Peter & Connie Scherk and talk about their training, competitions, their outlook and training philosophy and how they have become so successful with the Belgian Malinois.
This is one of the best podcasts for anyone who is interested in learning about IGP, training malinois, competing and understanding what it takes to be a wold champion. From their small, humble yet incredibly successful Team Heuwinkl, we delve into his training philosophy which he teaches in his new Book Successful Together / Gemeinsam Erfolgreich, a book I highly recommend.

I have been to one of Peter’s seminars in Virginia several years ago. The thing the stands out to me is how much effort he puts into developing young dogs well into their early adulthood before he begins with pressure. You can see it in his UA-cam videos. He works Etzel on the flat collar with a lot of positive feedback.

Robert thank you for this unique interview. I met Connie and Peter at one of their seminars in Querétaro, Mexico. They became my instant heroes. I bought their Successful Together book inspite of the outrageous $99 cost and mine looks like yours. I've translated many sections for friends here. I also attended Mia's and Florian's seminars from Peter and Connie's team.

Great interview. There was a really nice energy between them as a couple and with you as host. I found it interesting that it seems as they have been together for so long, and their training techniques and styles grew with and their relationship, their techniques and ideology were neither male or female, but rather a wonderful blend of both. A fun and enlightening podcast. I'm not interested in doing Protection sports, but I will buy their books, follow their social media, and add them to my information arsenal. Thank you for another wonderful podcast!

Love their work and passion and committment. Their book is a must to anyone training a dog in any kind of obedience. Thank you for the interview.

My female GSD (1.5yr old) was a temperament test fail...she had an off day and displayed low/normal drive - what we had asked for. Day of pick up(week after test), her drive had increased tremendously (highest of whole litter, lol). Not first time GSD owners, however first time working line. Pup was to be in very active household with possible agility or dock diving. However, she continues to have high drive and was tested at 1yr for bite work with good results; so I'm considering IPO but struggling with trust in clubs. The breeder is 6 hours away or I would join club where we got her. I am a firm believer in "love the dog you got, not the one you "thought" you were getting" so I want to do what is best for her but I'm glad to see that my fear in finding a good club is not just me being a nervous nelly. This video very helpful and I just need to find the good people in the sport. :)

It would be interesting to see the Schutzund events if they’d add new events each year..see how the trainers and dogs adjust to doing new things with limited times..I’m also a person that thinks they should make basketball courts longer and the baskets higher since the average height of people and athleticism has increased so much since its invention..

I would like to suggest an interview with Stefan Schaub from Staatsmacht Kennel, one of the most influential breeders in the working german shepherd world with Leon, Quardes, Terror, Trojan, etc, etc, he knows about lines and dogs. I hope you can read my suggestion. Keep doing like this, such great work.

I can totally get what he means by teaching in low drive rather than jacking the dog up. He's a malinois x malamute so I call it 'turning on the malinois'
I have held off doing any protection-style work with my 7 mth old pup because when he gets jacked up his fav thing is to bite and shows natural ability in his prey drive for what we use as protection and he already tracks his brother and my kid, which I don't deter I instead pick up on when he picks up a scent and start repeating what will later be a command word. I keep his drive down deliberately with his obedience work because i'd rather he does well than be having to correct him for getting excited and mouthy in the middle or at end of a good command. (he does get to play tug as a reward or string ball, also using tug to teach him to stay on tug and to release).
teaching fetch has always been my 'retrieve' training. Guard work starts as 'place/stay' i.e my bag on a beach whilst i go to the bin for instance.

@@theodorehyatt1782 For me I think it is more purpose bred than a mutt, now if they actually try to make this a separate breed that is unknown to me. It not like your doodle mixes where they just sit there and wad bred for decoration. The Malinois X was created to have both traits of the German shepherd and the malinois, since some German shepherds don't have the drive or speed like a malinois has and the malinois doesn't have the size the German shepherd has, they did the breeding to have both trainability, size, and work capability. So the dog is a working mix that they gave a name to for purpose work. This is just my understanding of the Malinois X and why they did the breedings behind said dogs.
