I firmly believe that if Paul lived in this day and age, he would have been aro and ace. When he is asked about marriage, it is hella awkward. Like if I was asked for marriage advice. "I mean, you can if you want to, but it's better to be single, less distractions that way." LOL
And then he would have had to extend grace to the rest of the community. I don't break the rules.
Speechless, as always with your work. I have been distant from your work the last few years. I've sort of jettisoned the conversations around Jesus in recent years. This song picks up where I left off and makes me feel heard. Thank you Derek.
so has he...
@@stanallport6746 please elaborate if you have something worth saying. Regardless, one major reason I've 'jettisoned the conversations around Jesus', is because so often it divulges into some narcissistic rhetoric from an evangelical. Although, if you're here to be open and have an honest conversation about the subject material (the dangerous misinterpretation of Paul) then I'll listen/engage.
@@VintageParkingTV i don tknow your beliefs... i know derek has renounced his Christianity, and in this song he laments the church not marrying homosexuals...well if you're homosexual, why do you want to get married in a church that doesnt agree with your practices..there's lots of places to get married...just not church.why ar eyou going to their house and trying to change them ?
@@stanallport6746 Sounds more like Derek is wrestling with destructive philosophies and speaking truth to them, in his own medium - song writing. As an artist, his job is to reflect on his experience. As a listener, our job is to... listen, react, think, wonder. If something hits you a certain way, perhaps pause to think, why does that make me feel such a way? Because, I guarantee there's a truth in there that you need. A pattern that needs to be broken. After all, music is art, and art gets at us, it's a reflection of ourselves.
Something I saw recently that resonates with this conversation…
I've never met anyone in the process of deconstruction who woke up one morning and said, "You know what, f*ck Jesus."
But I know lots of people who've woken up and looked at the fruit of their beliefs and behavior of the church and through tears and a breaking heart said, "What the f*ck, Jesus?"
As a pagan I love to listen to all kinds of music and I have to say i really enjoyed your perspective in this song ❤️
Agnostic witch who also carries a religiopolitical label of satanist here; this was beautiful. My mother's entire education was Catholic, and in her deconstruction particularly where it intersected with her morals and her activism, she criticized Paul above all others. Jesus was pretty cool. But some of His buddies really sucked, and they're the ones who got to interpret, reinterpret, and canonize THEIR version of His message.
Gives off strong Dear Prudence vibes
was wondering if this had been said. not a bad thing
That's exactly what I came here to say. At first, I thought Hey Jude, just from the lyrical structure, but yeah, definitely Dear Prudence from the music.
Derek never fails to create great music... and he is a wordsmith. Today's song describes the thorn in Derek's side- the Bible. Maybe the title should be "Sympathy for Moses (Gen. 2-3, Lev. 18:22), and Paul (Rom. 1), et al." (and anyone else "accidentally" canonized, and who wrote about God's design for the family, and marriage). It's not Paul's church, and the church's thorn is not people trying to change the definition of marriage, which is: "The act of uniting a man and woman for life." Those who feign neutrality, tolerance, and love, are hellbent on redefining terms to fit their worldview. The underlying thrust of this song is as old as the serpent's, in the garden- "Did God really say?" and more specifically "Love is love. Don't judge." And those not willing to accept the ethos of this age, not willing to sing along, are the ones not loving, are the ones "killing"- A subtle way of saying that Christians are killing others with their exclusiveness and ideology. With amazing musical craftsmanship, and great vocals, we are being lulled to sleep, learning to hate the "hypocritical Christian," and being inoculated against truth. Truth + Love are not mutually exclusive. I thank Derek for his musical ministry through the years, even if it may have "accidentally" played a role in building up my faith. May he go back to Where He Began (40 Acres style)- stop kicking against the goad - Sing again the words- "And I'll walk with grace my feet and with faith my eyes." Only the truth can set you free. You will one day see His face.
I will take gaslighting for 500 Alex
Colonizer.
Thank you for saying this.
@@joeburly World domination, Joe, one day at a time. Because Christ is King. Biblical Christianity is scary because it means you're accountable to the God who made you. In a world without God, why is 'colonizing' a bad thing? I thought it was survival of the fittest...? By what standard do you base your value judgements? your own heart? How pure or reliable is that? I don't win points for writing on social media, but hopefully some people hear the truth, and repent, and thus gain eternal life. May you know Christ, lay your burdens down, and be saved. Christ came to save sinners, he even saved a wretch like me. Thank you for taking the time to write such a succinct reply, it's a reminder for me to go and make disciples of all nations.
@@lelec566 Thank you for echoing his sentiment. The wording is a bit off, but a reminder for Christians to make disciples of all nations. Christ is King.
Derek Webb is on my Mount Rushmore when it comes to critical thinking songwriting. Once again, he makes you think and communicate things people always think about inwardly but don’t expose it in fear of shame. Christians do make Paul out to be Jesus Christ at times ( hanging onto every word he writes as if they were the 10 commandments).
Barf..
the song mockingbird came to my head this morning after a decade of me first listening to it, I'm glad I stumbled again into your music. this resonates with me more than you realize.
really grateful you're still listening, matthew.
I’m trying to figure out the name change thing. I got Saul to Paul. What other name change?
Maybe Christian to Non? Ask Derek.
I'm not sure I understand how Paul is still killing you.
That's because you lack critical thinking skills.

Such a powerful song. I love how Derek’s music hits you on another level.
Chills. Really looking forward to hearing the rest of the record. That last verse, wow! Such truth
Mr. Derek, (yes, I’m just that young) some time ago I discovered 40 Acres (through my mum’s old CD) and got hooked. I’ll spare the UA-cam comment essay but in short, the more I listened to your old music (Caedmon’s as well as your first album) the more you seemed like a hero to me. I do that with many singers, like Fernando Ortega. I looked up to you for many reasons (you sing really well and have incredible songs under your name), but mostly because we had a common hero: God. Jesus. I cannot see that now. Don’t abandon the faith and our God’s Word. I’m not indifferent; I still look up to you, even after hearing this weird thing you call a song. As many on this thread have said, God has blessed you with music and few are those that can write and sing like you did “She must and shall go free” and obviously many more I haven’t heard yet. This comment and all this comment section is proof that God isn’t done with you. I pray that you will return to God and be a beacon of hope for the lost, not the opposite.
congrats on arriving at the truth the Paul was mistaken and gave his life for a lie. What a fool Paul was, and you properly scorn him in this song. Good for you. He was deceived, but you have arrived upon the truth. May we all ascend to your mountain of truth after we properly deconstruct as you have.
I will never tire of hearing you rebuke the worst elements of American Evangelical culture. You are doing the world a great service. Thank you.
on the other hand, if the church doesnt agree with your gay lifestyle, why is it important to get married in a church?
@stan allport No. Get out of my thread. You want to be a homophobic jackass? Do it somewhere else.
@@stanallport6746 not to worry. There are some churches out there willing to take up the slack and clean up the messes of wrecked lives that yours leaves behind.

Hey Paul, it's not that I don't believe your story
That you saw the lord appearing in all his glory
You fell down at his feet in the middle of the street
And then you couldn't see for a week
But say Paul, I wonder would it scandalize you
If you saw how everyone has canonized you
How every word you said was on god's own letterhead
And his spirit was caught in your throat
Now every Pharisee must die eventually
By every word that you wrote, Paul
But hey Paul, brother don't misunderstand me
After all, we're so alike that it's uncanny
We've said so many words about a man we only heard about
But we've never seen his face
And we're both running from the men that we'd become
Before we changed our names, Paul
You're still killing us, Paul
You're still killing us, Paul
You're still killing us
So hey Paul, if you could see would you regret it
How the law made you see yourself as wretched
Would it break your heart to know that your church won't marry folks
Whose love it sees as a thorn
Because maybe you never knew that Jesus was loving you
Exactly the way you were born, Paul
You're still killing us, Paul
(Maybe it breaks your heart)
You're still killing us, Paul
(Brother, do you hear us crying out)
You're still killing us
I like the honesty sung in this song by you. It reminds me of the Rich song in some ways. But also, like, the opposite. With a chastising edge.
Edit- I must be missing something in pop Christian culture after leaving the church because I found out today disagreeing with Paul is apparently a thing.
Edit 2- I left the church because of a very specific and personal spiritual attack and spiritual and emotional abuse against me as a person by a lead pastor. I don’t feel that represents all churches. I am not against the church in general because I believe the body of God is his church but damn. I’m not sure where I land these days.
Honest truthful Truth, thank you for sharing this song...all the neigh sayers and bible beaters can kick rocks.
Just out of curiosity, not trying to come across critical but what’s so honest / truthful about this?
Simply the fact the Christian church is anti-homosexual acts like Paul was or something else?
@Jeremy Baratta That this musician (who my wife introduced me to) is willing to just be honest with the struggle in his heart. I think the "Christian" paradox is that they approach sin in a McDonalds kind of way. In a way that suits their moral agenda and not G-d's. Romans 3.12 of the Christian scripture’s states, "all have sinned and fallen short of the glory..." and even Paul (who generally comes off as a judgmental pick, esp in light of the Teachings of Jesus) admits in Timothy 1.15 that he is "Chief among sinners." It’s entirely easy to focus on Paul's teaching and opinions (as long as they don't call out our own sin of course, notice my sarcasm here to get my point), to condemn others as if any sin is greater than another. When Jesus said in Mathew 5.27 and following that all sin is the same, even sin that was never put in to motion. Or consider Mathew 7.3 about removing the speck of dust out of a brother’s eye when you have a tree in your own. The words of Paul have been used throughout the history of the church for far more destruction than good, and there almost seems to be no stop. examples the crusades, inquisitions, the holocausts, the Klan, slavery, anti-mixed-race marriage, Jim Crow laws, I could go on and on with examples. The point being (in my interpretation of the lyrics) less to do with who the church's current focus of sin (to deflect their own sin) but that the words of Paul have and will sadly continue to be distorted to the agenda of the time, and somehow the Church will continue to choose to ignore Jesus' words, esp Mark 12. 31-31 quoting the Shema and the loving your neighbor as yourself. Love wins because Love is Devine, the world suffers because the world is broken. We cannot do our part to repair the world if we choose to cause more suffering, and we choose not to love. When we twist the meaning of the gospel (the only meaning) then we are guilty of something far greater than simple sin.
@@sythlrd73 he was not expecting that answer. Nice job.
We shouldn't preach against sin without talking about the new nature in christ. not by works.. None can boast but by the death and victory of the cross. The blood poured out in christ.
This eyernal identity. Ks beyound sexualitu. its Not about being straight or Gay.
Its about being in christ! its about who you are and were before the creation of the world.
Its about this eternal family, adoption into the beloved. Its about destiny and overcoming c9nsequences of sin. Its about your unique DNA and purpose.
Its more then stored biblical knowledge in the filling cabinets of your brain. But flowing rivers of the experiential knowledge of God. The word must be digested with the spirit!
And again in Jesus's words. You must be born again !
man… this song is so sinister
Paul. Truly one of the most despicable characters in the Bible when you really dig into who he was and what he did, not to mention his character. I would truly encourage anyone knocking this song to dig into Paul a little further. He wasn't one of the good guys.
Jesus was loving Paul exactly as he was born? Um, no. God changed his name and called him to a new life.
He ate a root and had a vision
So God isn't love? That sounds heretical to me.
Hey there! Did you know that Saul was the name that the Israelites said his name and that Paul was just the Roman version of that? And that he didn’t actually ever change his name?
I agree that Jesus loved Paul just as he was born; he loves all of us as we are as well. But Jesus hates our sin. He will punish people for or it because He is Holy. Jesus died so we can change. So that we can be free from sin and death. He took the punishment Himself! That’s the message of the gospel! Tozer mentioned man’s ability to change in his book The Knowledge of the Holy(reading through it right now). THIS is the full “love” story. The implication that Derek is giving(as I see it) is that Paul didn’t have to change. What hope do we have other than such a change?! Paul would hate this song. He does.
Do yall know about his End of Days tour w/ Flamey Grant
This makes me so sad. Praying for you, Derek. You are so gifted, and I don't believe God is through with you. Your story is not over, so I'll keep watching from a distance, waiting for the day you come home.
Same. Wedding dress is still my favorite song. The world has changed so much in the last 10 years. Woke ideology has made such an impact where you are called hateful because you don’t agree with what is blatantly not Christian. I can love you as an individual and not agree with your chooses. Derek I do hope He brings you back.
I'm sad for you.
🤮
Problems with this song….. 1. The song suggests Paul didn’t think his words were scripture, and he would be “scandalized” by that, but Paul himself made it clear he had the authority to speak God’s word. 2. Paul spoke on clearly against homosexuality in Romans 1. You can disagree, but you can’t suggest somehow if he was here today he would want the church to support homosexual marriage. 3. The “we are perfect the way we were born” idea goes against everything Paul taught, that is Lady Gaga theology. 4. The song is called sympathy for Paul, but the chorus makes it clear the position on Paul, he is still killing us, his words should be rejected.
Sad to see a once great Christian singer has backslidden into apostasy. Jesus doesn't love us how we are born, He offers us a new life through second birth.
Amen! Our sin is what nailed him to the tree after being beaten nearly to death. This is . Idle words. Lies. May God put His holy fear in Derek Webb so he repents of his evil God dishonoring and abominable ways before it’s to late. God is not pleased !
“As it is written, There is none righteous, no not one” - Gods Holy Word in Romans 3:10 about sinful depraved human beings.
The heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked, who can know it? - Jeremiah 17:9
Thank God for Jesus who redeems us who are born again by the Spirit of the Living God and transforms us and we hate sin because we love and fear God.
I understand the need to work out one's faith, to know what and why one believes. I am saddened and concerned with the influence Derek has on both seekers and other questioning believers through his current music. I first heard this song in Nashville at a Rich Mullins remembrance event where Derek appeared at an intimate barn concert among other artists. My husband and I sat in stunned silence as a majority of those in attendance stood and applauded after performing this new song. We both had pits in our stomachs as we talked afterward about the lyrics and the subtext of their message. This song is simply heartbreaking. It questions the validity of scripture as the inspired Word of God. It is one thing to go through a season of working out one's faith openly and honestly. It is quite another to promote doubt in the revealed Word of God and a lifestyle that leads to ruin. I hear echoes of "Did God really say...?" in this song. I'm concerned about the harm it may cause. I share this in love, Derek. The Lord has given you such a gift with your talents. Please reconsider. 🙏 ❤️
Fun fact! Nowhere in the Bible does it claim to be the "Word of God." That was a more recent invention. The "Word of God" is mentioned in the gospel of John, but it refers to Jesus, not some book.
Interestingly, there's a lot of evidence that Paul didn't actually write a lot of the books that are attributed to him. Some (like Ephesians) are more summaries of his other teachings, but others (like first and second Timothy) were written by other church leaders who claimed their writing was by Paul so people would take their ideas more seriously.
The validity of scripture is definitely up for debate.
Hey there! Ever wonder why if you believe that god is all powerful and in charge that you are always scared of bad influences and dark forces?
@@edbofinger3220 I never mean to be rude. But read these verses:
2 Tim 3:16
2 Pet 3:15-16(especially this as Peter straight up calls Paul’s letters “Scripture”)
2 Sam 22:31.
I could grab a concordance and find all the passages about God’s Word. Old and New Testament. Not that you’re lying: you’ve been lied to. John MacArthur has spent much more time on this subject than me so check him out. You might just be debating for the sake of it. If so, stop. You’re wrong and lying other people as well. If you really wish to believe, it’s all there. I pray that God will reveal Himself to you. He promises that; if you really seek him(Matthew 7:7)
@@samuelllakaj5439 I feel like it's important to understand that the Bible is a book written by people. I don't care what it says, or what people have said about it, especially not people as objectively awful as John McArthur. To name a few things, he's a misogynist, an anti-masker and a domestic violence apologist - if there's a loving god, She wants nothing to do with people like that.
I understand you have plenty of personal reasons to believe the Bible. I'm sure it's a big part of your identity, like it was a big part of mine. If you want to keep believing, take my advice and don't look into it too deeply. Don't read it to yourself, keep letting people tell you what it says and what it means, and you'll be able to keep your faith.
Hope that helps!
What an evil demon
aww, go easy on paul. he wasn't all bad. ;)
@derekwebb not as bad as Derek
Grace is wonderful, but if it's not balanced with truth it makes you sick; and that's most of the church today, nauseating, sickening, sloppy, stumbling around in a stupor of narcissistic , humanist, compromise , drowning in massive doses of compassion, understanding and forgiveness, but completely immune to holiness, common sense, and true doctrine
This is straight apostasy.
Sadly
I think the word you meant to use is “heresy”actually. Apostasy is abandoning of Christianity as a whole, heresy is a rejection of one or more doctrines within Christianity. Nonetheless, this song is honestly neither as it is simply questioning. It’s literally a song full of questions. You (and you’re fragile white American facade of some perverted form of Christianity) do you though @mikewinebrenner

Sounds like someone can’t reconcile their lifestyle with scripture… so instead of submitting to the word of God, you say it’s not actually the word of God. There, all better. Or maybe he didn’t actually mean what he said, he was probably just confused. Poor Paul. Oh well, at least I can live in my sin and feel less guilty about it now! Wait I think he said something about this very thing… “3 For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions,

Maybe Paul was a human too? Maybe the fact we don't see his words that way is our fault and not his?
Yes Paul was only human. As were all the Biblical Authors. The problem with this song is that his doctrine (specifically on homosexuality) as mention by Webb aligns with the full counsel of scripture. Undermining Paul’s writings does not fix the issue of the morality of homosexuality. Or any other sin.
I think this comment may have inadvertently demonstrated something the song describes
