Tom actually said he realizes that his songs are superficial but he hopes that he opens up convos on the subjects.

I think the attack on Tom Macdonald is over politic his political views instead of anything racial or any disrespect to the genre. Chris Bouchillan did "Talkjng Blues" because he couldn't sing but could talk, maybe the same with Ben Shapiro. They would be praising his song if he would have said Vote Biden in his song. My opinion.
The irony in all of this is Tom actually gave a shout out to Kweli in one of his songs.
