    As an owner of a Protech Magic "whiskers" I already appreciate the solid quality/price of their knives, this appears to follow that trend. Having moved to a free state from California I can now carry these little beauties without a problem. This is an intriguing option, a sturdy small blade auto that will sit nicely in my small hands...do I need one, probably not, but do I want one - absolutely.

    I got about one month ago the BladeHQ exclusive Protech SBR with acid stonewashed blade and blue anodized handle. I've always loved the look and design of the Protech Rockeye, but I hated the overall size of the Protech Rockeye. The Protech SBR is a bit smaller than the Rockeye, and just seems too fit my medium sized hands like a glove!!! I disassembled my Protech SBR and used my Edge Pro Apex to lay the edge angle back, too make it a lot more slicey with a nice looking mirror polished edge. The Protech SBR is a very polarizing kife, but I absolutely love it!!!

    Knife Rights are working slowly but surely to change automatic knife laws. Here in Michigan we can carry them as of 2017 I believe. Montana legalized them just the other day. They had a picture of the Governor holding up a customized Protech SBR they gave him. There's hope, but I suspect Cali and New York will be the last ones to budge. If they ever do.

      Yep! April 3rd here in Montana. Seemed like a very quiet affair though (media wise). Didn't hear anything about it in the news, and only found out about it from a friend at work who stumbled across the news online. That was only a week ago.

      @@claytonanderson578 I suggest going to Knife Rights' website and signing up to their newsletter. They send ones now and then detailing their progress and events. They don't spam and beg for money like the NRA does. It's a great way to track knife law progress.

    I have the SBR and love it. Pro-Tech's line has plenty of smaller knives that are built to be extremely small. This is their first 2.5" knife, and it suits the design perfectly. Of course, if you want a larger knife, then buy the larger version which is just called "Rockeye." I'd have to disagree with the thoughts on it not being a slicer, it absolutely is a slicer. The blade is wide so the edge can gradually thin down to a very thin cutting edge. The spine is kept thick to make it a durable knife that's tough. This is also why the knife is so wide, so the thicker spine can thin down to a slicer edge. The wide blade also allows the handle to be wide as well, which makes for a comfortable grip; especially when doing tougher jobs. The raised jimping area for the thumb is also very smart. It allows the tip to be centered on the knife without having a huge slanting spine like a drop point would have. Instead, metal is removed from the spine so the blade can be relatively straight down the spine while the tip remains centered. Another great part of this knife is the slanted cut at the base of the handle. Those like me with smaller hands can comfortable hold this knife with all 4 fingers. Those with larger hands can get 3 fingers on, but still have a full grip due to the slanted tail end acting as a sort of pinky choil that lends full control to the knife; essentially it's at a perfect angle for the pinky to contact the slant, which behaves like an extended grip for those with larger hands. Overall it's a great design and I've been extremely happy with mine. There's really nothing quite like it on the market currently.

    I just received one of these as a (awesome) gift, my first ProTech. Build quality is great! The blade stock is reasonable and IMO it’s not that thick behind the edge-it clobbers a BM 940 or an Ultratech in that regard, and let’s not even consider a ZT 0900! It’s not intended to be a mega slicer, but I think they struck a GREAT balance between between beef & slice. Oh, and textured scales are a thing now too!

    Nice knife. Illegal in Canada sadly, but at least we have no blade length restrictions... so... there’s that I guess.

    • @johndesper9425
      @johndesper9425 5 років тому

      That's some backwards-ass logic. The length of a blade is going to be far more of a factor in its utility as weapon than whether it deploys in 1 second or half a second.

    • @kiltymacbagpipe
      @kiltymacbagpipe 5 років тому

      John Desper since when does logic have anything to do with how laws are made? In Canada the knife can’t be automatic, but it can be assisted, which in my mind is nearly the same thing. They also frown on gravity knives, so a weak detent can make a knife illegal. No logic to it from to top bottom.

    This knife reminds a great deal of another George design: the ZT909. They are actually the same knife, it’s just that the ZT is a frame lock, and the Protech is an auto. I like that the Protech version is much slimmer and lighter than the ZT, but both have handles that are just to short for someone with even moderately large hands. As much as I loved the 909, I always hated I could use a three finger grip on it. The same is true for this Protech.

      Andres Etchenique storing a spring compressed or uncompressed won’t wear it. What wears a spring is compressing and uncompressing during use.

      ????

    • @emersonb5764
      @emersonb5764 3 роки тому +1

      @@andresetc doesn’t matter. Springs wear out by flexing back and forth repeatedly, not by staying flexed in one direction. The metallurgical properties of the spring metal are only changed as it work hardens from repeated cycles. You probably encounter hundreds of springs each day in your life that spend decades compressed or stretched and still work just fine. But cycle it back and forth a few hundred thousand times and it may not return to the same length it once did when the load is removed. So if you’re opening a knife just to store it every night, and then closing it to carry it every morning, you’re actually “wearing it out” sooner. Gun noobs often unload their magazines for storage and then refill them to go to the range, thought it’s proven to be totally fine to leave them full in storage for years.
