The problem isn't so much with the quality of a tape like this, but if you rewind and fast forward a lot it doesn't last. If you think about voice recordings and how many times you have to rewind and listen back. If you use the cue and review feature I wouldn't trust the thinner tape.
Actually, even 90 minute cassettes are thinner to their 60 minutes counterparts. I remember when as a kid I made about a 70 minute cassette (to fit a particular album) of a 90 minute one and the diameter of wound up tape was much smaller compared to the 60 minute conterpart. It was also apparent they would not be able to fit 90 minutes of tape to the shell had it the same thickness as in a 60 minute cassette. Who knows if the thickness was not entirely dependent on the length, so that even your 10 minute tape may be thicker than a 60 minute one. You could check it out by measuring ten minutes on a HF60 if the tape on the right reel takes up the same diameter. By the way, not only colour of tapes on your HF10 and HF120 is different, the shells are different too, see the parts next to record notches, the shell of HF120 may be modified to be identified as Type II and on the video it looks like your HF120 doesn’t have the sheet of metal bellow the pressure pad, so it likely comes from a different batch or whatever. I noticed they stopped putting that metal sheet in cassettes later on.
Wish I had some more money back then. Then I would go for the high quality tapes with darker tapes (more metal-dust coated on the tape). So I would have high-quality sound from those good Radio days in 80s and 90s. 🙂 Anybody out there who actually use the Dolby button back then? I never used it, because I thought it removed way too much treble. BTW: Anybody who has a youtube link to a tape playing on 120 min? And also possible ones on 90 Min. and 100 Min.? I could then use those videos for making something visual for my collection of tapes, when uploading to youtube.... Thanks a lot. Krusty BTW2: It should be a recording of the front view, so people can see the tape slowly go from the left wheel to the right wheel, when people hearing the music. Basically simulating they are playing a tape. BTW3: Thanks for creating this video mate. Regards from Krusty in Denmark.
To my eye the HF-120 was peaking at +2 on the VU meters. So it sounded better. The HF-10 wasn't even hitting 0 on the VU meter so it didn't sound as good as thee 120. Thee record levels were different, so it wasn't a fair test .I.M.H.O. Still this was a cool video and I enjoyed it very much. 😎👍
I used the exact same levels while recording, so even I'm not sure why the 120 went a bit higher than the 10 😅 Perhaps it's because I already recorded on the 10 once on my previous HF video, and I just recorded over it for this one, but honestly, I have no idea lol Anyway, I'm glad to know you liked the video :)
@@ARandomOven I'm going to guess that the color (tape formula) was as you mentioned at the start, different for the 120 min. vs the 10 min. The 10 minute formula had every bit of the original ferrite color. I'm sure you know each tape formula requires tweaking (at the very least recording level adjustment) it isn't fair to compare two different formulas at the same settings for the opposing tape. Really deep level settings aren't easily adjustable in basic decks such as fine tuning the BIAS for a particular tape formula. I am not familiar with the deck you used and you didn't show the dials on it or talk about them. Provided your deck is in a quality state it still requires tweaking at minimum of the record levels as I mentioned earlier. Anyway happy taping (and listening) with the hobby of cassette 😄😃.
hi i am in the tape game the thin tape is called LP 1/8 PANCAKE there is SP 1/8 PANCAKES they put in the cassettes 30min the LP 1/8 tape is to thin for my otari DP2700 decks i had a video it went crazy so i pulled it of to many mails i was getting
I have a Maxell Black Magnetite UDI 150, and it sounds about as good as my 120s. Perhaps the Black Magnetite formulation is what's saving it from sounding worse
I have always avoided 120 min cassettes but i do have a dew tdk d,s from a used lot i have bought .Sony hf,s are great tapes i do love the look of the early ones and the shells of the hf,s.

TDK had a D 180 back in the day. The magnetic layer was so thin you could actually look through the tape 🤣

I love them long! The longer the better audiocassette for me!

Never had problem with 120s. I have a sealed TDK 150 tape from Japan tempted to try it.
