I’m 56, been a fan since the mid 80’s, got to see them in about 85. A guy I met in College, we became friends over this band, he passed away a couple of years ago from a heart attack, gone too soon 😢 I saw his widow shortly after and she said “Matt always loved The Church, and when he talked about them, your name would always come up” made my cry, it’s amazing how wonderful music is an interwoven part of our lives. I’m really looking forward to their new music in 2023 🙌🏼
Do not lie.
Nearing 60yrs of age I’ve searched for the best musicians, it seems like, forever. Here is a prime example of the best.
The best in originality, the best in message, the best in individuality
One of the few albums that I could never imagine not having in m collection as a young man. "Starfish" is an absolute masterpiece from beginning to end.
That's literally true, especially the first and last songs
Agreed 💯
Try older stuff
hey matthew you ever hear Boo Radleys first album? This church record and boo radleys "everything's alright forever" were staples as a kid. so cool church did this concert. i'm just finding out now they did it
@@stephansong Try the newer stuff too. Its great as well.
Awesome band! First saw them at the University of Wollongong in 1983, and going in a couple of weeks to see them in Philly! SK is a true poet, and you gotta love the Rickenbacker!
This band is a national treasure. How does this crowd not stand up and get into this wonderful performance? I could’ve been just a head and a spine and I’d move more…
I was there and totally incapable of movement due to my pre concert dose
During the later days of high school I was lucky enough to have friends that we all listened to The Church whilst driving around and simply admiring the brilliance of the lyrics and orchestration. Sill remains a favorite and damn! always resonates.
One of our favorite bands ever. Thanks, Australia!
Incrível 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 décadas se passaram, e os caras estão com a mesma essência,👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I have a slightly different access to The Church. I accidentally bought the album Starfish in 1988 when it came out (on CD) and took it with me on a road trip through Europe in my Porsche 944. Autobahn through all of Germany from north to south is approx. 1000 Km and when the trip is completed at night you definitely need good music even if the car you drive is inspiring at high speed. Among a lot of good music such as Talk Talk and Pink Floyd, I played Starfish with The Church and I have never been more hooked. A fantastic album which is still very good. A bit bittersweet feelings from youth maybe (relatively - I was 22 years old), but still a record I listen to quite often.
A very good live performance that does not differ significantly from the LP/CD in 1988 (albeit with significantly more punch), but I think the song "North, South, East And West" stands out as the best. Fantastic inspiring guitar playing from Marty that really makes the Richenbacker swing and the rest of the band follows up. It sounds really good, it really does and few bands do this better (with this setup of band members). It's very, very good quite simply :)
Miss one of the best....Hotel Womb !
I thouht the exact same thing!!!
Uma das melhores bandas do mundo!
Conheci recentemente , muito boa !
These guys are incredible, what good memories they bring to my mind, the band sounds spectacular and almost like on the CD !!! that is a very great merit and few can achieve this, long live The Church !!!
Reminds me of when I worked at 91X in San Diego in the late 80s. Such fun ❣️🎼
They were spot on that night. Straight emotions. I loveeeeee it. Thank you for posting the church at their best.
Love these Guys, get the Chills watching this Clips... Thanks. Long live Musik !!!!
A masterful, transcendent performance by a band still at the height of their considerable powers. Marty and Peter trading riffs on Reptile was mesmerizing, Tim Powles rock solid perfect on drums and Steve Kilbey's emotive, evocative vocals are so understated and timeless.
totally agree.

Never tire of listening to this fantastic group 🎸🎤🎵🎶

It was a great era for Oz Rock... Hundreds of bands playing gigs most nights of the week at hundreds of pubs across Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth. Bands constantly touring up and down the east coast, playing in small country towns and coastal towns... We took it all for granted. We thought it would just go on like that forever...
flash in the pan...
These are the bands that made music what it is today! Never let them die!
Besides The Cure my second favourite band over all the sessions!
With love from Hannover
Thank you.
Hands down, this is the best version of The Church. MWP and Koppes were essential.
love the church . from brasil

Tô viciado nessa banda !
Como pude passar tantos anos sem conhecer …
Damn I am so sad both of these guitar players left the band and I am seeing them in May. Sure their replacements can play this stuff but idk if they can match this god tier guitar tone they have.
It doesn't equal. Sums of all parts. With no mwp. Or koppes. Just not the church
Nah. Sadly. Now the drummer is a lsvkey. Sad. Check out the show this year. Rather see Steven on acoustic bass alone. Sad.
why ?
@@starpoint78 why. Watch them at the Phoenix. It's a shsm. The drummer they used is bazic. Doesn't know the songs. As the one guitarist is decent. As I said. Steven on bass. One acoustic guitar. It'd been much better. At least a drummer whose done his homework, to not beat all over such epic songs. I hope Steven had fun. Still will not know if they canceled rest of tour. Without the originals players, he's shown he had musiciens that kept up. Granted. Original drummer having injury. Last moment hires. I stil feel like he settled. Anyways. Glad they played.
What year is this? Great show. Everyone is in top form. Great to see Marty and Peter together. And Craig. Great era for this band.
I grew up in Sydney and with the tale beginning about the mid 90s the house next door to me and my family had a big backyard where until then I used to mow the grass for the elderly couple who lived there alongside us for the previous 25 years well they left the planet, and so into this vacated house moved this interesting fellow who it turned out was a musician - a drummer in fact - who over my occasional visits inside got to know him as Tim and that he had then recently joined as a member of a band, where he additionally took up on running their 'World Fan Club with his home being listed as the address for all fan mail. Although I would occasionally hear them rehearse in a big upstairs room (that once been an open verandah - could have been a great stage to the street if it wasn't by that time long closed in). I didn't think too much of exactly who my neighbor and his frequently visiting colleagues really were. This, even though I went to see this band over that period perhaps several times at pub gigs around Sydney. I only really convinced myself of how good The Church was once I got considerably older, finding myself having become considerably more critical over the music that I listened to. I think it was in 2000 - living as i was then in Santa Cruz, Ca - i went into SFO town to see the band play at the Fillmore, and was chuffed that Tim identified me in the crowded stalls section that he looked up into seeking who had just exclaimed about how fabulous the performance just had was - really neat & surprising to have him pause a moment & then shout out a real friendly 'g'day Pete' to me.
These days, continuing to live in the US. I do my best to promote to locals I encounter - whether asked or not, about The Church and their talent, explaining that that they are an exceptional example of the sort of quality musicianship that is spurned out of my Aussie homeland.
Amazing live-Performance of the Starfish-Album.
Wow, Great to see then still being amazing .. The Church was a legendary underground band that many of us kids totally got into. I got a feeling that they are going to influence many generations to come. btw, Sorry to ruin the perfect number of comments by adding a 70th comment ...
Bought Starfish on vinyl when it came out in 1988 and I still listen to it to this day 35yrs later
Under The Milky Way is such a mega hit!....takes you back to 1988 immediately.
THIS ONE of my biggestvaussie favourites and on the original its pkayed SLOWER and thats part of what made it such a big hit It gives it more FEELING im making my top 100 list of favourite songs at the moment This will be about number 22 on my list❤💋💖
Incredible how they can reproduce the album sound live! please tour again!
They were so good!

So masterful!!! Thank you for posting this important live show!!
Amazing voice!!! still troguht so many years sounds great
a brilliant band well on form, with the added bonus of some of the most poetic and heartfelt lyrics in rock
MWP and PK are a masterful guitar duo. Having two guys like that in the same band is an embarrassment of riches.
Fantastic!
Love this band.
MWP has the best rock hair in the entire universe :) Great performance of a masterpiece :)
They were one of the best Australian Bands of the 80s, hard working and always gave you a good show ,great musicians
Excelente actuación de unos de mis grupos favoritos. The Church forever.
Unfair not having Richard Ploog for at least this night. He is irreplaceable.
Great band. Amazing haunting voice! Great song! ❤️
I saw the group on by Birthday June 12 2009ish in San Francisco at Slim's. What a show and yes I got drunk and was happy like a lot! Long Live The Church! 😀
Brilliant!
I'm 57. In 1981, I finished school, so i went to see Dragon at the Horden Pavilion in Sydney The Church played support. They had just released album The Blurred Crusade. And so my life changed forever from that day. Thanks Steve, Peter, Marty, and all the drummers over the years, for all of your great records and songs. I played Feel before uni graduation in 1994.
Beautiful classic performance ❤️
Love this band so much!
This is The Church at its finest…. Never again will this band unite… So sad!…
ya, lets see how long the new guys last /lol
God save Boulder CO. until May 9, 2022
Crisp magnificent tunes!Excelent voices! Brilliant performance! Thx for sharing!
I love this album and the live performance is even better.
Great band.
Love them since '83, in '88 they give an absolutley great concert on "ORANGE STAGE" at Roskilde Festval (Denmark) on their "Starfish Tour".

The Church, in my humble opinion, is one of the best rock bands ever.
So sad I missed a chance to see these guys in a tiny venue where I grew up. Found out about it the week after :(
Epic performance. Can't hear the Reptile song enough! Absolute legends!!
Excellent band 👏. Steve Kilby 👏 WOW! They 🪨 🎸 rock!
It's real singing without any backs. So cool!!!
Great performance here. Great band, really good drummer.

I was a college student in 87 with an alternative radio show, and played this album on my show quite a bit.
Super concert great band, the church, more feeling
Looks like Marty's guitar tech hands him the wrong guitar right before Lost. There's a little jump cut where he has the Rick, then suddenly has the Jazzmaster (around 11:30)
They have always been a good hard working band
Amazing version of Reptile here - sheez-a-loo!

Pks outro is incredible
Richard on drums makes such a difference. The other guy can't even play constant in opal. Still. It's going to be great to see em no matter what in reno.
AHHH, the Backstreets line at the end... Filled my Jersey Girl heart.
56 and been a fan since unguarded...thx to my friends I have seen more of this remarkable band
Voice hasn’t changed in all this time

Hard to choose only one..
My fav is of skins and heart..
Epic!
Yeah I remember being at this concert it sounded great and had a great time and I learned a lot so Good times woo woo
Such a huge influence on my music growing up in Oz.... never the best sounding live band but this vid is awesome... amazing guitar sounds of Koppes and Wilson-Piper and always loved Kilbey's bass playing and sound.
I dont agree that they were never a great live band....have seen them some 8 times as far back as during hey day......always kick ass! ALWAYS!!!@
@@mapndo2337 Well I saw them many times myself and they were ordinary... each to their own... does not mean I don't love their music.
Saw them in Boston, waited forever inside the Orpheum theater, it was nice they took me back, talked to Steve Kilby, I had nothing for him to sign so I grabbed the wrapper of a teabag, and he signed it love and tea. At the same place in the same room I talked to the husband bandmate of Elisabeth Frasier after a Cocteau Twins concert. It was a sweet heartfelt chat. Back then I really couldn't make smalltalk, so it was just authentic. Just like when I talked to Jeff Buckley about a year before he died, on tour in Boston elsewhere.
Sigh. Now I am grown and can see the conversations better. I hope they felt lucky like I did. :) 😍
Starfish is a MASTERPIECE!
Banda pouco conhecida no Brasil, mas, que eu gosto muito.
Baita Banda
They sound incredible
Great job,,,,,sounds awesome.
Of Skins and Heart…….one of the great Australian debut’s. Heyday, signifies for me a great time in my life. Thank you Steve for being such a great muso an enigma and just providing such a back catalogue of very, very finely crafted music that is the Grange Hermitage of Australian music!!
Maybe the greatest rock album ever made.
When in Chile brothers? amazing band
