Cholla is pronounced "choy-ya". I live on the Sonoran desert in Arizona, and I thought you were in Arizona! Love your channel: you have a gift for melding photography and commentary into a story. I confess I enjoy the story-telling more than the repair tutorials and the cabin improvements....but I watch them all.
I love west Texas. The mountains views go on forever. Right out of an old Cowboy and Indian movie. Big sky country. The silence is deafening after a few days. It is such a harsh dry and hot environment. Creatures mostly come out at night. There is tons of wildlife out there. Just not what you are accustomed to. Coyotes, fox, snakes of many colors, lizards of all kinds. predatory birds, ground squirrels, burrowing owls, showy beetles. Safe travels.
That sand storm brought back memories. While stationed at Holloman AFB, New Mexico, we could see them building up as we looked west towards White Sands. We always had to hustle and get everything on the flight line cleared out or secured. We also covered the intakes, exhausts and canopies of our aircraft.
Interesting to see the soil crust in your scrub land. We have the same biological crust here in undisturbed bush land in Australia where I live. You can always tell when the soil has been disturbed by grazing or other human activities here, because you get onion weed populating the area. The Goats, sheep , pigs and cattle of early European settlers disturbed this soil-binding layer and because a lot of Australia has thin soil due to the arid environment, colonisation has seen these fragile soil ecosystems disappear in many places. Apparently these soil crusts can also reduce fire intensity. In Australia, where these biological soil crusts are intact, the seeds of weedy grasses are less able to germinate and as a result, fuel loads are reduced.
Your life is so brilliant Slim...travelling all over.the place ...so many interesting places and views.... always enjoy your travels... take care Slim xxx
Can I make a friendly suggestion. 🤓 it breaks my heart and it feels like someone is poking hot nails into my eyeballs every time you let that transmission hold that big truck in place. Of you would like your transmission to last and your parking brake to be properly adjusted try this. Put the truck into the park and apply the parking brake before you release your main brakes. There is just a pin holding your truck if you just leave it hanging in park and if that breaks, well that ain’t going to be any fun. Just a friendly suggestion, safe travels Slim.
As a transmission shop owner (now retired) I was thinking the same thing. I made a living replacing auto trans parking palls broken off by not using the parking brake on hills. It is an expensive repair. I hope Slim reads your comment.
Mother nature is always changing. Your stay in the Texas desert taught me to turn around if the road becomes too "iffy," point your vehicle/trailer into the wind, wait the weather out. Be somewhere at sunset, look for beauty in details in nature, see the whole picture in nature, keep a clean life. Thanks from the Oregon Coast.
What a desolate looking area. You always make it interesting for us. As for the garbage left, it sort of looked like an arranged collage. An ugly one! Thank you for taking care of it. Possibly Monahans sand hills? Never stayed but I’ve been thru a couple of times, have the t shirt and cup. Great video as always. Safe travels. Van Horn is also worth seeing.
I've lived in Texas for a few years, graduated HS there. Two weeks later I boarded a plane to San Francisco and lived in Berkeley, right near the corner of Ashby and Telegraph, during the 1970's. Just needed a change to balance my head. Then I decided I wanted to travel some more, and joined the NAVY. The irony is that my first duty station was at some bombing ranges out in the Nevada desert!! I'd look out over the desert, watch the sage brush and jackrabbits blow by me, and wonder what the heck I did to deserve this??!!? After about 6 months I decided I'd need to enjoy the nature and what the desert has to offer, or I was going to die from alcohol poisoning!! Seems like I'd really decided I loved the desert, the sunsets, the barren landscape, and it was time to transfer to a new duty station. I tell ya, I can sure live without that 120 degree temperatures.

A few months back we bought a 2wd Ford Ranger. It is supposed to be able to tow 7500 lbs. We live in Iowa. On the 13th of this month we bought a new Casita camper (Independence) which we drove down to Texas to pickup. Driving down to Texas the best gas mileage we got was 28 mpg, driving back pulling the camper the best we got was 17 mpg. Of course when we drove back we got hit by that storm and we were either driving in the Oklahoma foot hills (we had to go that way to traverse Dallas. I had driven through Dallas last August and wasn't willing to pull a camper through it.) or driving right into a strong northern wind. Future trips will pin down what gas mileage we can expect.

Thankfully Slim's notifications still work as designed! Thx Slim a nice start to the Monday safe travels! How exactly did you film 15:40 footage, with the drone, and if so how did you control it? If automated that is a great addition to the cinematography Slim Well done! Of course answer is optional just curious! Ty
Hey Slim! As usual, some really nice camera work. I experienced my Texas duststorm several years back, on a motorcycle. When a tumbleweed blows under the wheels of a semi-trailer 40 yards in front of you it looks like an explosion! That, and seeing another biker down, put me in a motel by noon. I feel I was riding the fine line between being brave and foolish.
First, scrubs like a form of scrub oak close to us, can indicate water under the sand dunes. Common in the Llano Estacado area. Second, as a 34 year veteran of a PD, that pile of junk/trash sure looked like a crime scene to me! The hammer, phone and (uh hum) being the key! Ha ha. Take care brother!
Thank you Slim for sharing your travels,, I have enjoyed them all.. I too don't understand why people leave their trash.. we were always taught to pick up any trash behind.. and clean up after ourselves...
I feel the same way you do Slim about litter. Some people are too lazy to hold onto their junk until they can dispose of it, PROPERLY! That was some desolate land out there. Imagine breaking down and have to get towed. Thanks for sharing this adventure.
Great video! I never knew Yuccas grew anywhere east of Arizona. It’s possible a strange person like me left that artwork monument out there.I’ve been known to find things in the desert and arrange them.🍨
Great video Slim. I really appreciate you sharing your adventures with us. I look forward to each video as it comes out. I can always count on you to show me something I've never seen and take me to new locations that I may travel to someday if I am lucky. If not then at least I was able to see it through your camera and artistic ability. Thanks for cleaning up wherever you go. We should all do the same. Gypsum Dunes looks like a very interesting place that I would only want to visit in the winter! Happy Travels and don't let the negative commenters get you down. If you don't have naysayers then you aren't sharing much of any worth.
Just a suggestion, after running your engine during that dust storm. Stop by a auto parts store and get a new engine air filter. Welcome to windy west Texas from Lubbock Tx.
Thanks 🙏🏼 nice sunset 🌅 the last picture Texas moved here a few years ago haven’t been camping yet some time soon 🔜 thanks 🙏🏼 fire the inspiration and for giving us a picture of the Bird Big Texas size bird
My guess with the pile of stuff is that someone else was finding it all and scavenging the land and placed it all there in a pile with the intention to take it away, however something side tracked them and they ended up leaving it. The blue skies are so rich and just gorgeous. Thank you for all you do. Loving this look on you Slim. Hugs
I think the unique trash might have been someone's idea of art, or maybe it has to do with some kind of ritual, but I don't think it was just random trash left by a camper.
Thats what I was thinking. Maybe a spot a couple, family, or other come to and leave a suvinoir piece each time they visit tradition. Probably took years. The hot wheels cars. 😟
@aired-downdisconnected4125 Ha Ha, you're killin me! Picture this: Summer 1976, Mommy, Daddy, Little Billy and his sister Sarah sitting around the campfire. "What a swell time I had" says little Billy. "Can I leave a symbol of my happiness on this spot so it will always be a happy place?" "Why sure son!" says Daddy "I think I'll leave my favorite toy car" says Billy as he places it by the fire. "I'll leave my favorite Alien Toy", says Sarah as she hugs it one last time "Well Gosh Golly" says Dad. "I think this spark plug will represent a safe journey home. What about you Mom, what gives you happiness? BZZZZZZZZZZZ.......
😎me again and I do not mean to be one of those incessant know it all. At 4:55 second that sounds like your power steering pump. One suggestion super easy to do at home, (preferably two people, one to crank the wheel left and right and one to pour the liquid, but doable if you are by your self). Jack up the front wheels, turn them full lock left or right, using a vacuum pump empty the reservoir and refill, start the engine and crank full lock to the opposite side, and repeat until the liquid is clear. Also that sounds like cavitation where the power steering is sucked into the power steering pump. There is an O ring there, a few dollars and it could extend the life of your power steering.
It was nice of you to give Reuben a shout-out at the muffler shop.
My way to say thank you. He was a great guy and didn't rip me off, so I gave him an unsolicited shout-out!

i allways look forward to every one of your videos
I enjoyed the tranquillity other than the sandstorm, and the scenery was really nice. It was great to see the sunset and cloud shots,
Take care , happy travels
I really like the wild country of west Texas those cross winds are pretty common out there., the sunsets and sunrises there are magnificent
I got behind a little. Caught up now! thank you stay safe ALL
Thankfully Slim's notifications still work as designed! Thx Slim a nice start to the Monday safe travels! How exactly did you film 15:40 footage, with the drone, and if so how did you control it? If automated that is a great addition to the cinematography Slim Well done! Of course answer is optional just curious! Ty
He has a video on it. It’s a small drone that automatically follows him and is really cool!
Beautiful sunsets in West Texas.
You're in my neck of the woods! Welcome! Actually, that terrain is easier to travel on after it rains. The water doesn't last long in this dry area.
The sunset was breathtaking! What an interesting trip,
ahh... you're in my birthplace. Made me homesick. :) Those storms are epic.
Glad you found someone to replace that exhaust hanger. Last time mine broke my Mom fixed it. Took her about 5 minutes
12:07 I think those are left for out of space visitors 😮
First, scrubs like a form of scrub oak close to us, can indicate water under the sand dunes. Common in the Llano Estacado area. Second, as a 34 year veteran of a PD, that pile of junk/trash sure looked like a crime scene to me! The hammer, phone and (uh hum) being the key! Ha ha. Take care brother!
Love how you brain works. Sounds like the beginning of a book. Write@
That’s exactly what I thought… a crime scene. 😮
enjoy watching your video very much.
Thank you Slim for sharing your travels,, I have enjoyed them all.. I too don't understand why people leave their trash.. we were always taught to pick up any trash behind.. and clean up after ourselves...
Thank you for sharing your wonderful journey with us. Those gorgeous skies are amazing.👍
Hugs
I was thinking it was the contents of a trash bag that broke apart and blew away.
Picture this:
Summer 1976, Mommy, Daddy, Little Billy and his sister Sarah sitting around the campfire.
"What a swell time I had" says little Billy. "Can I leave a symbol of my happiness on this spot so it will always be a happy place?"
"Why sure son!" says Daddy
"I think I'll leave my favorite toy car" says Billy as he places it by the fire.
"I'll leave my favorite Alien Toy", says Sarah as she hugs it one last time
"Well Gosh Golly" says Dad. "I think this spark plug will represent a safe journey home. What about you Mom, what gives you happiness?
BZZZZZZZZZZZ.......
@@SlimPotatohead 😄 The husband took it away and left it there .
Anyways it's cleaned up and better than you found it. 👍
Well ya know Slim? I was going to make some smart-ass remark about moms donation to the shrine but I don't think I can top yours.
and why would they leave a vibrator and an iron in a ritual lol
