I’m pleased to see that my fence fluke has finally been recreated in recent times. Back at the time I was about to lose Internet access in late 1997, I sent off an e-mail to the Karting community noting that this was one of 2 fluke shortcuts I couldn’t figure out how to recreate. (The other was the Wario Stadium full-lap skip, which I’d later unveil to Kevin Booth in 2000, Andrew Weatherton in 2007, and publicly in 2010.) When flukes happen such as these, and nobody recreates them for decades, I’d begin to wonder if my memory was getting fuzzy over the years. There is a great sense of vindication nowadays that I wasn’t just imagining things, especially now that I am physically unable to play anymore like I used to. Excellent job to the 2020s glitch hunters. The baton is passed on indefinitely.
Your pronunciation of "vigor" caught me off-guard. In my accent, "vigor" rhymes with "bigger", I've never heard it pronounced in such a way that it would rhyme with "tiger".
you’ve come such a long way from earthbound record history!! your content is so great to watch, it’s great to see the gem that is your style of presenting speedruns polished up so wonderfully :)
I’ve been following videos like this for a long time. A few months ago I joined the community and got to see this happen myself. It was absolutely incredible, and I can’t wait for more to unfold! Awesome video my man, really well done.
My personal definition of "mario kart shortcuts" is if the TAS saves time with the shortcut over the nonshortcut, then its a shortcut If the shortcut time is slower in a real time run, its because of human error, not the validity of the shortcut
When I was holding my spots for #1 scores in Pac-Man CE DX, the whole "muscle memory restart" killed a good 2 out of 3 runs that I manifestly did not want to kill.
I just calculated the possibility of this clip happening on every lap. Its 1 to 72.900.000.000.000.000.000, Or to put it in words 72 Quintillion and 900 Quadrillion to One. That's the Chance of a 1:90000 event happening 3 times in a row. Cant wait for all of Humanity trying this for 10.414.285.714 Attempts each
imo a "shortcut" would be any path taken that isn't intended by the developers, whether or not it's faster. Also, the positioning and trajectory of the 2 successful clips were in completely different spots and directions. Maybe it isn't nearly as precise as expected.
In my opinion, a shortcut should be doing anything that involves a route not originally intented, like jumping over walls or fences, going through walls or objects etc etc. The Wario Land skip over the wall is a clear shortcut, same as the one on Royal Raceway with the big boost ramp. Basically, if you go outside the normal drive path, it's a shortcut, regardless if it saves time or not. There are of course some "legal" shortcuts, that are intented shortcuts, like the obvious shortcut on Koopa Troopa Beach, they should of course be allowed.
4:25 - Of course. The non-shortcut run would then take the 1st place in "shortcuts" category as well above the slower run that uses the shortcut, but the slower run with a shortcut shouldn't be allowed in non-shortcut leaderboard.
Did anybody else notice how the fence looks a little different on every successful attempt? It looks slightly more see through and I wonder if it’s an indication on if it’ll work or not
If the non SC record is lower than the SC record it is ultimately also the record for SC. Just because you can use shortcuts in one category doesn't mean you have to use one for the record to count. It's like setting a 100% record which is also faster than the Any% record, you'll get both.
I thought he had to reset and end the run because he pressed start and that's not allowed, he thus didn't do the whole reset by muscle memory only pressing start.
i feel like i've seen another video before about the mario kart community coming together to try (and succeed) to stop one person from holding the wr on every course... what the heck am i thinking of??
in normal gameplay, a shortcut might save time, but the same shortcut could waste time in a speedrun. I'd still call it a shortcut with relation to the game itself, but a "longcut" or detour for the sake of experimentation in relation to the speedrun it's used in.
I think an Abney 24/24 is still possible, but EXTREMELY unlikely. It's amazing the shortcut even happened twice, with a 1/90,000 chance. With 30K attempts so far, the chances of it being pulled off by this point are 1/3... and it's happened twice. I don't think anyone's pulling this off again for a very long time.
Bro how could people dislike this? This is just straight up facts, no bias or forced jokes or anything. Only reason I can think of is similarity to summoning salt, and that's not even a bad thing
A lot of people have had bad experiences with speed running... and this video has a lot of padding to explain basics mostly unrelated for it. It gives the history of speed running... which isn't what people are here for. Who cares about the Flap or 3lap records and other methods? We are here to see the luckiest speed run... not 50 others.
I think they try to use a visual cue of some kind but it's too precise to really work. They try to match the cue but it's so precise that they can't tell if they were off or not. A guaranteed set up with a consistent set of inputs would likely be too slow since the trick only saves 5-10 seconds. It's not impossible of course
In my opinion, longcuts (shortcuts that take longer) should still count as a shortcut just because if it gets optimized to become faster, what do you do with any run that did it while it was suboptimal? Disqualifying it would be bad because they were doing completely legal things at the time, allowing it would beg the question if slower runs using the route would still be allowed or else if people watch these runs and see these strats just to find out they are banned. No shortcuts is just the "go roughly intended route" and so slowcuts shouldn't be allowed in my (probably fairly uninformed) opinion.
Shortcut or "long"cut doesnt matter, its about playing the game as intended, its one of those thing people outside the speedrunning community find extremly easy to understand while those in it have kinda forgotten what it means to not cheat in a game.
That pronunciation caught me off-guard. In my accent, "vigor" rhymes with "bigger", I've never heard it pronounced in such a way that it would rhyme with "tiger".

The first 5 minutes were such a waste of time and completely unrelated to the video title. Maybe if you titled the video as History of Kalamari Desert records then I'd be okay with watching the first 5 minutes of gunk
Too much exaggeration on the consonants makes it quite a bit annoying because at some point you're no longer listening to the content as much as waiting for when the next "nnnon shortcut" will come
Normally I don't respond to any criticism as a rule but I'll make an exception for this one. Due to ongoing construction on the water main for the last few months I've had to set the noise gate higher on my microphone or everything going on in the ambience gets picked up. This has led to some words getting cut off at the beginning and ends of sentences when I record audio. The fix for this was to draw words out that start with a low cadence so I don't have to come back and record them several times but it appears this may have been a pattern I've picked up for more words. It's something I'll be mindful for in future videos, thanks for calling it out.
@@Abyssoft It wouldn't be so much of a problem if it simply happened not as often. If anything it adds flavor, but not when the video is so full of it.

David, I still visit your glitch hunting website for that sweet dose of nostalgia. Thank you for your service to the gaming community!
Jesus, that MrPitt video still hurts to this day - I feel SO BAD for him, dude.

Good stuff abyss!

Mario Kart 64 is really kept alive with speedrunning, but also with good videos like these. Keep it up Abyssoft.

That's mostly used for MK Wii, MK64 just use the term short cut or skips
