I have conflicted feelings towards Chet character. If I was just judging him basing myself on his actions I would qualified him as a joke to qualify himself a father and even an insult as much he seems to be a total disaster. Now, looking more under the lines, I can at least say that he doesn't think much of himself as a person in general so as a father let's not even talk about it. Having John giving him news regularly about Shawn and how he was doing during that year apart, actually realising he was doing great certainly made him realise and, in a certain way, ended to convince him that John was a way better option for Shawn. He seems to be the kind of person constantly demeaning himself thinking he doesn't deserve much in life, including be part of his son life, neither be able to give his son the life he would think he deserves... which is kind of sad when you're aware that the only thing Shawn is craving for is his father presence on his life, nothing more nothing else. He has never complained neither whined about their modest life as long as his folks were there for him and taking care of him. A lot of teenagers would have acted as total spoiled brats resenting their folks for not giving them what they would assume they would deserve as life standard... but not Shawn, no even once which is quite honorable for a 15 years old kid. And plus knowing he had to face and endure an abandonment issue during this entire year, being left out by both of his folks, I mean it's certainly not a slight thing to deal with. What a mental as his own, what an unconditional love he feels for both his parents. He deserves so much and yet receives so little, fucking unfair.
