THANK YOU for making this video!!! And a HUGE THANKS for keeping the first impressions IN the video. It is FANTASTIC for people to be able to SEE your ACTUAL experience...the pen NOT wanting to write...and then taking the TIME to WRITE it out!!! Cheers!
Write it out! That is exactly the way to describe it! Thank you for the reassurance for leaving the difficulties in, I went back and forth about it for a while, but hopefully it can help someone out there at some point. Thanks for stopping by!
Thanks for your review! I'm squirreling away my nickels to get a 650. I use the Mag 600 for everyday cursive writing and I love it. I write fairly quickly and have never had an issue. Because it eats ink like no other, I have been able to try about 15 or so different inks, and favorites include: BPC Ice Rink, Sailor Manyo Fuji, and Pennonia Draculea. Dark inks are most impressive and tops on the list are Papier Plume Cafe Diabolique, Taccia Ainezu, and Pennonia L-017. Right now I am testing a d-r-y ink, FWP Buttered Popcorn, and the nib still does well. I think light or bright inks are a little hard on the eyes in large doses since the pen deposits so much ink on the page.
That is good to know about the 600. I really wonder how much of a difference there is between the two. It does eat ink like crazy! I just cleaned it to fill again later tonight and I keep going back and forth about what to put in it. So much fun to write with though! You look like you have great taste in ink!
A fine review, Addie. Astute reviewing process, great aesthetics, superb production quality, and most of all, authentic! I think I'm convinced... the Magna Carta Mag 650 may be my next pen purchase.
I am glad it was helpful! I was very happy that it was giving me a different experience with flex compared to my other pens. I like my other pens a good bit, but having something different was really nice.
My first video to watch. Nice job!! I was all in, and excited about this pen, then reality hit $450! My husband would divorce me. lol you are blessed my new friend. I will just see and enjoy through your videos.
Thank you so much! $450 is somewhat insane, I agree. It was definitely something I saved up for over several months and not an amount I’ll spend again until the pen fun fund has been built up again!
I am watching this with my brand new Magna Carta Mag 650 in amber next to me. It is filled with Diamine Cherry Sunburst ink and writes beautifully. It is inspiring me to improve my cursive writing now!
I completely understand! It looks pretty scary on video. All I can say is that when using it, the pen doesn't feel like it is being pushed too far and it snaps right back to normal. It also takes next to no pressure to create that flex. I haven't sprung a nib yet, but I am sure it will happen one day! Thanks for watching!
I am sure it will be a regular in my currently inked videos! I do want to see how it acts with a bunch of different inks in it. Thank you for the nice comments!
I love the flex pen here! My budget: Not so much! loll I love Artistry in my writing and printing in my art as I learn calligraphy, and Japanese and Chinese characters which I'm experimenting with including in my Zentangle - doodling distraction from art school studies practices. Is it possible to find a flex pen in an affordable range around 75% less??? I love The Goulet Pen company you tubes. You mention this later in the video. Thx for unboxing review -- love the background jazz.
I honestly love the fountain pen revolution ultra flex nibs. If you get a Jaipur V2 (my preference because of the piston filler, but more expensive) or a Himalaya V2, they both have #6 nibs that seem to flex more than the smaller #5.5 nibs they offer. Fountain Pen Revolution has frequent sales, but either one would be much less than the Magna Carta even at retail, and would give you as wide of a flex line. If you already have a pen that accepts a Jowo or a Bock nib assembly, Fountain Pen Revolution also sells those with their Ultra Flex nib. Just make sure to get an ebonite feed. I find it makes a huge difference with ink flow. I have multiples in both the Jaipur and Himalaya and haven’t had serious issues with either. Flex pens are a lot of fun! I think doing Zentangles with one would add a lot to the experience!
This review was so thorough, so professionally made, and unique in my UA-cam experience. I have bought several failed flex pens and was reluctant to get this one because of the price. Now, I am really excited to get it. I really like the sheet that you used to record all the facts about the pen. Do you have a copy of that somewhere on your website?
I honestly went into the Mag 650 with a huge dose of skepticism because my other expensive flex pen (a Crossflex nib) is very very fussy. So i totally get being jaded about flex pens. The Mag 650 continues to blow me away to the point where I am actively trying to find an ink that will misbehave in it and I haven’t found one yet. I posted the New Pen Day sheet in a bunch of different sizes on my community tab for people to download, along with a version that skips all the measurements, and added a New Nib Day sheet for new nibs. I am so glad you stopped by!!
Thank you so much for your review. I have the Magna Carta 600 and I’m thinking about getting the #650. Believe they both have the same nib but the body is different, nicer on the #650. Loved your Information Sheet on your pen, did you create that yourself?
Yes the body style on the 650 is nicer overall i think, and I do really love the look of the stacked resin. I should have my Mag600 video up tomorrow. The pen sheet is something I put together and is available as a free download in a few sizes on my community page ◡̈
I liked your review! I'm definitely not interested in spending $450 on a Magna Carta, but I think your review was honest and well done. This was my first time watching one of your videos, and I'm glad I found them! Thanks!
Thank you for watching! It is really much prettier in person than it looked in the photos. My grail pen list would have gotten one shorter after I received this pen if I didn’t keep adding to it 🫤
Very impressive work, beautiful video, and awesome writing. You realized so many things that has taken me a year to :) I was able to get a replacement nib, which has worked perfect! No railroading, ever. I can tell you that the old bad one has slowly caught up, and writing very well. I am going to go against the popular belief and say that Waterman Serenity blue mis-behaves in many of my modern flex nibs, including that regalia nib. I recently got a 650 on loan from good fellows at Goldspot and will be comparing it with 600. Lovely pen and lovely review. Thank you :)
Thank you so much! I might actually be starting to agree with you about Serenity Blue and I might have to explore picking a different ink to test new pens with. It was particularly fussy in the regalia nib. I look forward to seeing your review!
Oh no, Serenity Blue is my ride or die for testing. Every new pen get a dose of it for a first ink up. Looking forward to the comparison, as I would like to know the diff.
I made it in Affinity Publisher, but I imagine it wouldn’t be too hard to make in Canva or the like. I am going to make a couple of different sizes and then put them in my community tab as a free download. I was trying to get that done before I posted the video, but I didn’t want to rush it!
Thank you! I used the most recent PenBoyRoy code found with his affiliate link on this video: ua-cam.com/video/fZOkHdAO3A8/v-deo.htmlsi=o7VB3SGCKa1Swf0t. The code was STEWIE, but I am not sure if you need to use the affiliate link for it to work or not. The codes do expire eventually, but that was the one that worked for me when I ordered.
Not sure I have the patience for flex writing. Playing around with a FPR Ultra Flex and the judge is still out on the experience. Beautiful pen and informative video. Thanks.
Thank you! I can say that as much as I love flex pens, there are days I consistently reach for my broad or architects just to live in a fuss free zone for a while. Even the best behaving flex pen changes the way that you write and sometimes I’m just not in the mood.
Hello! You're welcome! This pen is a Goldspot exclusive (as of right now anyway), but it looks like they ship internationally. They are usually pretty nice to work with, so I am sure if you reached out to them through their contact page, they could let you know more. If not, the Magna Carta site also has a contact form and they might be able to help. I honestly don't know how much it would be in Belgium, but Goldspot might be able to help you out with that too - goldspot.com/pages/contact-goldspot
I am used to write with flexi dip nibs. Having them on an oblique penholder and being used to write on a 52 degrees slant I have a question before investing in fountain pen flex: how is it writing with flexi fountain pen on a slant? Most videos I saw have showed writing with these pens on a vertical slant only.
I think a fountain pen would have the same issues that a straight pen holder would have. There are ways to get the slant with a straight pen holder, but I have heard that the resulting writing can have a tendency to have more issues with connectors or fine lines. I am sure it can be done, but if I am trying to get that slant, I tend to rely on rotating the paper a good bit. Rotating the pen to try to keep both tines in contact with the paper seems to result in more ragged writing, though less so with the nib on the Magna Carta than some of the stiffer steel flex nibs. Hopefully I understood the question correctly! Thanks for stopping by!
So, may I ask how much you needed to write with it before it stopped having hard starts and railroading? I have that exact same issue and this pen is brand new for me. I do hope that use will make it work as it should, but currently I am not too happy at all. thank you :)
I would say that it took nearly a whole converter fill. It started behaving better near the end of the fill and then seemed fine on the next fill. I wasn't happy in the beginning either! I am not sure why it acted like that with me either. I ran some dish soap water through it to get rid of any contaminates from the manufacturing process and used an ink that I knew pretty well. I would reach out to them if it is still acting up after you go through a converter of ink. It is possible that there is something wrong with your nib or feed that goes beyond what I was talking about in this video.
It’s still really good advice! I am guessing my stopping problem would have at least been reduced with the initial ink fill had I used a really wet ink.
I am so glad. Glad you showed the part where you were having trouble with it.

Thank you so much for this close-up comparing of different flex nibs! That's great! I learned a lot today.
I am glad it was helpful! I was very happy that it was giving me a different experience with flex compared to my other pens. I like my other pens a good bit, but having something different was really nice.
Fantastic review! Thank you!

Congratulations! Great ink choice as well!!
Excellent review. Very thorough. In particular the focus on the nib flex and the long writing sample. Thank you.
Thank you so much!
Thank you for the review! The way those tines bend makes me nervous of springing it! But it looks really special. Really a unique nib on the market.
I completely understand! It looks pretty scary on video. All I can say is that when using it, the pen doesn't feel like it is being pushed too far and it snaps right back to normal. It also takes next to no pressure to create that flex.

I love this pen too in this color. Will order on weekend.
I hope you love it!
Thanks for sharing. This pen is so stunning.i feel I would have to add this to my Grail Pen list.
Thank you for watching! It is really much prettier in person than it looked in the photos. My grail pen list would have gotten one shorter after I received this pen if I didn’t keep adding to it 🫤
@WhimsyofThings lol yeah that grail pen is never ending
wow, how beautiful, and can see why you love that ink
Thank you! It is such a pretty ink
Definitely looking like a vintage Parker 51. Interesting flex and eventual lack of railroading/flow consistency. Great review!
Thank you! I think the next flex pen I get will be something vintage again. The one vintage flex I have is pretty stiff.
thanks for the great review. i’ve added it to my BUY ASAP list. 😅
Thank you!! I am hiding my buy asap list for a couple of months now 🤣

Thanks for sharing all your experiences with this pen. I really love the colour and the very flex nibs. May l ask what the 15% off code is?

Can you do a video of all your favorite flex pens?
So, may I ask how much you needed to write with it before it stopped having hard starts and railroading? I have that exact same issue and this pen is brand new for me.
I do hope that use will make it work as it should, but currently I am not too happy at all.

I would reach out to them if it is still acting up after you go through a converter of ink. It is possible that there is something wrong with your nib or feed that goes beyond what I was talking about in this video.
Next step is verifying that the nib will not be deformed by the usage. Some persons had this problem with Scribo's flex nib.
Yes, I could see that being an issue with a nib that is this soft. So far so good, but that is a long term issue so I will have to keep an eye on it.
At the SF Pen Show the guy from Magna Carta recommended to put very wet inks into the pens.
And I see you found that out yourself. I'm so glad it's working much better for you now.
It’s still really good advice! I am guessing my stopping problem would have at least been reduced with the initial ink fill had I used a really wet ink.
I’ve been waffling because of the price. $450 is a little steep.
It is quite steep. Even though I had saved for it, it was pretty painful to press that button!
