I'm surprised at the poor quality of HP laptops these days. I just repaired a 17-Y where the hinges and nuts were broken off much like you have here. In the end, I ordered a new back and hinge set to do the repair at a cost of $100 for parts alone. The notebook is made too cheap and the hinge tightness is too high. Seems this is far too common a problem.
God damn those HP 15r laltops have crappy build quality. I had the exact same issue with hinges. Gave it to local repair shop insfead of spending fortune on authorized HP repair and the repair guy messed the display up such that i cant control brightness on my screen anymore
Before I purchased my last HP laptop, a person from HP headquarters ensured me, the problem me and many others were having regarding this hinge issue was fixed and this is no longer an issue. So I bought the one that I have now wouldn't you know it shortly after my extended warranty runs out it happens again. Nice fix job HP!

I was given a laptop identical to that one, and I now regret not watching a video like this one prior to taking it apart. I didn't know that the keyboard had to come out first. I removed the bezel around it first, and in the process, severed the cable for the track pad, as well as ripping the power switch off of its ribbon cable, which led me to ask why HP designed it this way, rather than having the switch on the motherboard itself, in a spot where when the bezel was mounted, the power button would line up with the actual switch. I also noticed that they put the memory on the underside of the board, so in order to upgrade it, you have to remove the motherboard and flip it over to get at it. I'm going to attempt to fix the power switch, but not the trackpad, since I plan to use a mouse with it. Another thing that stuck me as odd was that it seems to lack Bluetooth, even though it was built in 2016. My 2010 HP Elitebook has Bluetooth, but this one, as well as my 2013 HP 2000 Notebook seem to lack that feature.
Not sure if anyone will see this, but I have a very similar model and by accident I shut my laptop screen too fast and the plastic lining around the screen split near the left hand bottom corner and I cannot close it or else it will ruin the inner workings of my computer. (With it stuck in the open position, I cannot close it to remove the long hinge peice.) Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this? It looks pretty ridiculous carrying around an open laptop. Needless to say I'll never slam my laptop closed again.....
My laptop has the exact same problem, only that the hinge attachment to the base of the laptop was solid. So I just pulled apart the old and new hinges at their pivots and replaced just the screen assembly part of them, with a new back cover as the attaching points on the old one were shot.. This saved me from the trouble of pulling the base apart. As for the cause of the damage, it wasn't loose screws, as they were pretty tight when I removed them and I had no wobble. It was the plastic mounting points on the back cover that gave way.. Thank you for the video, it was an invaluable guide!

I also reinforcd the hinge sides with a piece of wire coat hanger & J-B Weld. I also used J-B weld to strenghten the hinge mount suppots on the lid; mine broke loose due to over tightened hinges.
Interesting. I've just upgraded my sister's 15r to an SSD and found that one of those hidden screws had failed in exactly the same way. I made much more of a performance getting the screw out than you did! Good to know they aren't hugely structural. Incidentally - I've never had to jump through so many hoops to replace a disk. Ridicularse. I much prefer older corporate laptops that are designed for rapid servicing. That said, the i3 performance after the upgrade was pretty snappy.

How important is that? Since it's so thin I don't know which function it holds. I'm planning to order a new hinge only because of that but you can tell me if it's worth the change.

I accidentally spilled alcohol on my HP laptop. I wasnt able to close the laptop and let it dry. So Some keys stopped working, the usb port is making my mouse do stupid things. And the system is slow. The hinges were broken months ago. What should i do? Like buy parts or ask an expert first? From the Philippines.

Hello there, I find myself having to perform this exact repair for my own HP laptop, but I don't think it's worth getting a new top cover (it would cost about 5 times as much as just getting the hinges, which doesn't seem worth it for a 5 year old laptop). So I was wondering, would this work by using my current top cover with a strong adhesive to glue it to a new pair of hinges? I think that would have the added benefit of the screws not loosening over time, and since the surface area between the hinge and the plastic would be relatively large I think it would hold well, thoughts?
@@Adamant_IT Thank you for the reply. I think I'll try gluing the nuts to the cover first and checking periodically to see how it's holding up, and then if I find them loosening again I'll glue the whole hinge to the cover, thus avoiding any disastrous consequences.

Searching eBay for "HP 15-r top lid" and "HP 15-r hinges" will usually turn up results. The fault is so common on this model that the other day I was doing one and an eBay seller was selling kits with all required parts in it.

Nothing much you can do sadly. The best defense is to keep an eye on screen-wobble. If the screen has any play in it (so it wobbles without the hinges actually moving) then the screws are getting loose, which is what leads to them getting ripped out.

Hi I managed to complete this myself using your guide however during the repair the power switch ribbon got damaged at the soldered connections. Ordered a new one but laptop keeps shorting out even though everything appears to be in place. Any ideas?

Sir Hp made hinge nut to tight of this model i loose both for easy open top cover no need heavy force between bottom layer and top layer broken

I've not experimented with adhesives. I've seen stuff like Sugru used in hinge repairs, and it's held up, but not tried it myself.
