"The first time I ever really listened to Kyle Kulinski’s show was in the back of a cab last summer. The driver had his phone hooked up through the stereo and was pumping out an episode through the car speakers - loudly, as if looking to convert a captive audience.
“Do you like Kyle Kulinski?”
The driver, Ahmed, was a recent immigrant and apparently a die-hard fan of Secular Talk, the political talk show that Kulinski broadcasts on UA-cam. I told him, yes, in fact. I do like Kulinski, had come across his show several years ago, and, all things considered, he seemed pretty good.
“He understands what we’re up against,” Ahmed said. “Like Bernie.”
But I was surprised to hear Kulinski’s name mentioned in the same breath as Bernie Sanders, particularly with such adoration. Because what I did remember about Kulinski’s show struck me as mostly capital-P “progressive” takes on the news - the left wing of the Netroots crowd more than the democratic socialism Sanders has popularized.
It’s an impression that wasn’t entirely incorrect.
“I have no time for philosophical, airy bullshit,” Kulinski tells me from his home in Westchester, New York. “I don’t want to hear about Lenin. I don’t want to hear about Marx. I just want a super plainspoken, straightforward agenda with a straightforward way of selling it.”
With over 800,000 subscribers and nearly 670 million total views on UA-cam, selling a progressive agenda is clearly something Kulinski knows how to do - even Democracy Now, the long-standing flagship of progressive media, cannot match his reach on the platform. Chapo Trap House can certainly boast a wildly devoted fan base (and a not insignificant degree of media influence), but their audience is roughly half the size of Kulinski’s.
While Secular Talk might be more likely to be looped in with the progressive networks around Air America and Pacifica alums like Sam Seder than the more resolutely socialist world, Kulinski’s fiery rhetoric, razor-sharp class instincts, and knack for withering takedowns sets him apart from his peers. Judging by his rhetoric alone, he’s closer to a Eugene Debs than a Chris Hayes.
But unlike Hayes, Amy Goodman, or his friend Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks - who began airing Secular Talk on his web network seven years ago - the thirty-two-year-old Kulinski is virtually invisible in the mainstream media. Despite his enormous fan base, his show has never once been mentioned in the obligatory trend pieces on “the Millennial Left” pumped out by the prestige media. Nor has Kulinski’s name ever popped up at all in the New York Times, Vox, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, or the Washington Post, despite his leading role in cofounding Justice Democrats, the organization widely credited with sweeping Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the rest of “the Squad” to power.
Just last week, his Wikipedia page was deleted. The reason? “There is very simply no [reliable source] coverage of this person,” according to one moderator. In new media, he’s king - the Sean Hannity of the Berniecrat left. In old media, he’s nobody.
I suspect there are a few reasons for that. There is nothing “cool” about Kulinski’s show. (As a friend put it, “‘Welcome to Secular Talk’ sounds like something you’d hear on Egyptian radio.”) His no-nonsense social-democratic politics won’t get him much cred with the Full Communism crowd. He records his show not in Brooklyn or Los Angeles, but in a studio he built himself in his modest Westchester home. His hair is too groomed and his taste in clothes too preppy to qualify as “Dirtbag Left.” Nor has he ever attended an n+1 release party. “Not only have I not attended one,” he says, “I have no idea what that means.”
And yet he’s astonishingly plugged-in for a young man in the suburbs. Wondering how Sanders ended up on the Joe Rogan Experience? Kulinski, a frequent guest on Rogan’s wildly popular show, introduced them. “You make the most sense to me,” Rogan told Kulinski on a recent episode. “You’re a normal person.”
Much like Sanders himself, Kulinski’s show has a massive audience that just doesn’t compute with our media’s understanding of “what the kids want” or even “what the left-wing kids want.”
It’s probably for the best - the very woke and very WASP-ish decorum haunting much of the media world is nowhere to be found in Secular Talk. “Corporate Democrats over-focus on identity as a trick to divert you from the issues that unite us all - class issues,” he said on a recent episode.

You know how sick we got from freaking chicken pox parties in the 70s? My brother had permanent scars on his face. It's inhumane to have unaffordable health care. Of course it saves $, because people avoid going (and you cannot go to a doctors office and not pay, they will cancel your appt.) So we get sicker and die sooner. I have a genetic defect of my internal organs...I got a bill for $3500 when I was in high school (I had turned 18 in April) and also got nasty phone calls about it. I filed bankruptcy at 23 because I owed $65000 in bills and wanted to get married(in 1991) I know my fear of bills damaged my health and led to me requiring a kidney transplant because could not go to the doctor. And that's everyone, people don't go to the doctor with every little thing. But I know I'm the type of person Republicans want dead asap. But I'm not gonna meet thier standards ...I've worked full time my entire adult life. And I'm 60. I'm trying to have faith..but man it's hard ...

PLEASE READ AND PASS ALONG! My wife works in the health insurance field. Her supervisor’s wife works for a VA hospital as a nurse. They, the whole staff received an e-mail by The government, meaning Trump, asking them to quit and they would pay them until September. There’s already a low nurse to patient ratio, many of the younger nurses have taken the option leaving even less nurses to care for patients. BUT this goes to the doctors, the administration staff, everybody! THERE IS A HIRING FREEZE for new staff. These people are forced to work double shifts at rates they’ve would’ve paid for three nurses. I thought his offer was going to be for federal government, low level admin staff NOT NURSES AMD DOCTORS! We’re in SoCal so this must be happening across the country. I don’t know who to tell but maybe one of you reading can spread it to someone with a voice. God bless

I had a fear of vaccines until I was 16 years old. 6 years old, I was pinned down by doctors over several vaccines that they failed to inject me with. I still remember him and the two nurses restraining me and my mother getting angry at the doctor. I was forced to take swine flu vaccine by my parents at 16 and couldn't leave the hospital. I was heavily into Alex Jones at this time and embarassed the hell out of myself.

SSRIs don’t make the brain release more serotonin but they instead block the reuptake of serotonin after it is released. The difference is that you actually have to feel something positive to have the serotonin released and then you’ll stay happier for longer. That is why SSRIs are not effective for everyone as especially troubled people may not have enough positive experiences for serotonin to be released in the first place and thus the treatment to be ineffective. SSRIs are best used alongside therapeutic methods (such as CBT, Existential, or Gestalt therapy) to improve maladaptive behaviour and complement the medication.
That being said, SSRIs are proven to be effective at treating depression.
Actually the serotonin theory has been completely debunked. Look for the latest information out there. Even psychiatrists are exposing the lies of big pharma.
Let's not forget that Kyle gets a little too excited sometimes and tends to be misleading. A few days ago, he made a big deal and he said a vet was arrested at an ICE raid when he was mearly detained while the raid took it's course. Comparing being detained and being arrested are like night and day smh.
Indeed. Releasing loads of serotonin would be like MDMA. Cocaine releases both dopamine and serotonin. While the opioid pain medication tramadol is a mild serotonin release and a mild serotonin re-uptake inhibitor (not the sort that takes weeks to leave your brain like an SSRI though). You would want to avoid taking a heavy serotonin releaser while on SSRI’s (at least a high dose of them), because that could lead to serotonin syndrome which is potentially fatal. Having said that, I’ve done a lot of drug and pharmaceutical experimentation in my time, and I don’t think I’ve ever experienced serotonin syndrome, at least not beyond that of a headache, and have regular headaches anyway for unrelated reasons.

I've been taking SSRIs for more than 30 years. Without them I probably would have died more than 20 years ago. They helped me be a more patient mother, and they happened me get out of my house, go dancing, and meet my beloved 2nd husband. They've made my life much better. I am armed, but I haven't even come close to shooting anyone.
The bad thing about ssri’s is that you can’t just decide to try something else whenever you want you have to keep taking the SSRI forever unless you go through horrible withdrawals just to try something else.
I don't think SSRIs cause school shootings. They have their place and I am glad that they worked for you. However, I strongly believe that SSRIs will never compare to various psychedelic medicines when it comes to curing (not deafening) depression and anxiety. I don't know you and I don't know your story, but these medicines work wonders when it comes to developing an appreciation for life and finding happiness, and ultimately can lead to a total transformation of your mental health. It is best paired with therapy in a controlled setting with experienced people who know what they are talking about, and unfortunately in the modern era these groups are inaccessible to most people as in many countries they are illegal. I'd never tell any stranger on the internet what they should or should not be taking to help themselves, but I would encourage anyone to do some research on these topics yourself and to come to your own conclusions.

Saw something on the Indonesian news about the mass deportations of immigrants - even legal immigrants and how the Indonesian embassy is contacting all Indonesians in the US to have all their documents in order and on them at all times.

It feels inverted and perverted all these actions, which have roots in eugenics and genocidal racism. Hollywood in recent years was helping us to transcend race and sex by portraying historical figures in races that may have not matched the races of those people, just like it may have not matched other characteristics, because actors are not those people, all of this was beneficial by helping us to experience a multi-dimensionality of reality and to diversify, it was the resistance to all of that that leads to systemic racism and exterminations, this is why they hated woke agenda or Hollywood, they have invered the whole thing. So-0called wokeism was making sure another Nazi Germany does not repeat itself. They accused people of dividing based on race or sex, when it was actually them who were focusing on it so much by protecting two dimensional concepts of race or sex, so that humans would be reduced down into objects, not as third dimensional subjects. This is a psychological warfare that they have been playing, people need to understand it.
SSRIs can actually increase suicidal tendencies or violent actions which is why they ask people about those kinds of thoughts before prescribing them. The reason is simply that SSRIs greatly reduce procrastination and other self-imposed limitations, so if you have a sincere desire to do those things you're more likely to act on them after taking SSRIs.
