    I just recently finished Overhaul's arc for the first time and loved every bit of it. His design, his personality/attitude, not to mention his OP quirk and motivations make him very interesting as a character.

    To simplify everything in a psychological way, Chisaki is a Sociopath, not a psychopath or incoherently evil, a sociopath. Sociopaths are capable of feeling emotion and forming attachments, but they don't understand others' feelings. They only feel when something directly effects them or the few people they care about. They also only care about the person to a certain degree, they will still value their own wants over the other person despite loving them. They are extremely impulsive, acting upon whatever they desire at the moment, even if it contradicts their ultimate goal or need. Chisaki' s attachments were to the boss and the truth quirk guy (I apologize for not knowing his name) so they are the only ones who he cares about, but he was still willing to hurt them in order to achieve his goal. His love for the old man is also all he thought about for most of the arc, his only motivation to do anything was him trying to thank the boss for taking him in by doing something he believes is what the man wants, even when he lost his hands. After his hands were gone, the old man is what's shown alongside Chisaki's scared face; all he could think about was the horrific realisation that he not only failed to thank the old man, but basically killed him because he can no longer heal the man from what he originally did to make him comatose in the first place. As for not understanding others, this was shown multiple times such as him not expecting Shigaraki to deny him, his torture of Eri, the way he kills others with no regret, and the fact that he put the old man in a coma because he still believes the man will be thankful even after the man told him not to get involved with drugs.

    I agree with you on that I didn't really get chisaki the first time I read the manga... he seemed flat to me, unreasonable, contradicting himself... much like how shigaraki's reason for being evil didnt make much sense in the earlier arcs when he seemed to be evil for the sake of being evil.. but when the anime reached this arc and I viewed it again I understood his complexity better. he was twisted for sure, but I could appreciate him more as a villain because in his own twisted way, it made sense that he thought what he did was right. especially if you take into consideration his quirk. we do not see what happened when he first activated his quirk but I suspect it was something similar to what happened with shigaraki. we don't know how he ended up in the streets, but it is almost certain that he accidentally killed someone, whether he cared about that person, like a parent or family member, or not. I also suspect that he wouldn't know how to do the 'reconstract' part of his quirk at first meaning that death was permanent. so in his mind, he couldn't understand that great destractive power he had, so maybe that's why he believed the decease theory so easily, it was an easy explanation to what he had done "its a decease, deceases kill. I did't kill, the decease killed". we see him as a germophobe and assume his this amplifies his notion that quirks are bad because they are a sickness, but I see it more like, he is a germophobe as a result of thinking quirks are a decease. if a decease could lead to something as deadly as a his quirk, and could change the society and the norm in such a drastic level, someone who believes that thats the case, would be terrified of germs. in his backstory as a kid, after taken in by the boss, he is seen bruised in after fighting, and its stated that it has happened many times. meaning he didn't use his quirk as a kid (if he had he wouldnt have bruises since he would kill his opponent instantly) because he had accepted it as something bad, as a decease.
    this is not to excuse his behavior, it is mainly to understand better why he was so stuck in that idea that quirks are deceases. because if they weren't, if it was ok for all the amazing heroes to do heroic deeds with their own, normal quirks, then what did that make him, the kid who can kill in an instant, just by touching someone? in this world, a villain. abnormal. then add to that the fact that the only person who took him in and showed him care was treated as a "villain", something society would call him too had they seen what he could do, and the fact that the so called heroes threatened what his father figure had built, that could very easily lead to his broken personality and twisted sense of reality and conviction.
    even after shigaraki got a much more detailed backstory, sharing many of the things that happened or I speculate should have happened to chisaki, I still find overhaul a much more interesting villain, with many more layers in his personality than "this world rejects me so I will reject it back", and I found myself pitying him when I realized he could never fix the mess he made, he could never put his father back together, since he lost the ability to use his quirk and now, consiquenses apply to him as well. and the irony that right now, the only person who had the power to fix his father, or even him for that matter, is eri.
    said too much, but that was such a good video it made me think

    I feel like Overhaul is a character that was only a few steps from truly acheiving greatness. His backstory and motivations were sandwiched in between the Mirio and Deku fights, which overshadowed his character as a result.
    It is a shame that unlike Stain or Re-Destro, his ideology didn't continue to affect the story in a major way after his arc was over. He definitely had the potential to be the Doflamingo of MHA, a charismatic villain that was the first casualty in the new age left by the old generation.
    Though if there was one thing that I think he should've done in the story is kill Tsuyu. It really would've made him look more threatening and competent, as well given the arc more lasting consequences.

    • @KirbySonicTeam
      @KirbySonicTeam  3 роки тому +3

      Personally I like that he was struck down so harshly. The consequences of his actions were Eri’s suffering and so I’m happy that he achieved zero greatness or memorability in his world. Because at the end of the day he’s just a raging child with the powers of a god.
      But if that stuff wasn’t entertaining or as compelling to you then I can understand how you could want more. But for me everything he did in the arc was satisfying to me.

    Hey! I finally got around to watching!
    Just as we discussed on my video, I really like the fact we approached Overhaul from different angles but still managed to come to so many similar conclusions about his character.
    We both picked up on the ‘Overhaul’ persona, how fragile his calm demeanour is, and the contradiction of his plans which I find really cool because I hadn’t seen anyone else talk about those things before so I thought I was the only one. It’s great to see someone else delving into that!
    I like your take on his relationship with the boss. Whilst I took a more clinical approach, breaking down and exposing how shallow and weak his version of ‘love’ is in comparison to how the rest of us feel towards our loved ones, you focussed on the fact that, from his own point of view, it is still love regardless of how it compares. It’s probably the only version of love he knows so he doesn’t understand that, in comparison to the average person, it doesn’t measure up. But, unlike many others, you don’t treat that love as his saving grace and act like it makes him a totally sympathetic and justified character. You acknowledge his version of love but also point out the flaws in it too, which is very refreshing!
    Great video all around! I’m glad you found me and we got the chance to talk and exchange ideas. Your Eri video is next on my list ✌🏻

      @KirbySonicTeam  4 роки тому +5

      Thanks for the reply man! Being honest, when I saw your video it kind of made me doubt my own. So hearing your positive take on it was really helpful and uplifting. Not exactly sure what I was specifically doubting, but I just know it really felt like your video was a response to a lot of my points, even if not intentional. But Im really happy to see that, as you say, they can work more as companion pieces than different and competing takes.
      Thanks for watching and I hope you'll look forward to my Eri video, and also my newest video coming out today. Though its not MHA related, I think the video is very newcomer friendly with regards to its topic. Take care!

I mean people that talk about MHA more often. One of the few exceptions is Oceaniz and now maybe you. I feel like there is a lot of subtle storytelling with Overhaul's character and, heck, MHA in general that goes through people's head. At least subtle for battle shonen stories. It's great to see someone that gets it. You really get it. Great video, man, and I'm subscribed to your channel now.

    While this was undoubtedly my favorite arc of My Hero so far and I really enjoyed Overhaul's role in the story, afterward I was still wondering a couple of things about him. Namely why he seemed so cruel with little explanation in comparison to a lot of other characters. But when you pointed out how his quirk renders the threat of death as an arbitrary concept, on top of his tendency to go too far with things to an obsessive degree, it made a lot of sense. Not to mention the other childhood moments that recontextualize other aspects of him.
    By the way, if you ask me, Chisaki's dub scream sounds a lot more harrowing.

      @@KirbySonicTeamFirst, I really like the editing and formatting style of the video, it’s very smooth and concise. I also really liked that you took a stance that is(or was idk) pretty uncommon, in kai not really contradicting his goals, but instead misleading those around him that he sees as enemies. Pointing out the difference between Overhaul and Kai and using his quirk as a metaphor was also very interesting. And pointing out that, yes , he was always an erratic and neurotic sociopath is always a pretty big W in my book, this man is NOT stable,and I doubt he ever was. And the biggest thing that I adored about this was your take on why overhaul is so cruel, the idea that, with his quirk he’s essentially above consequence even on subjects as life and death would of course lead to such careless abandon for the lives of others, because he can always fix them right? Until he couldn’t and suddenly his world collapses in on itself. It’s a beautiful type of irony that overhaul despises using his power, and yet he completely hinges his entire existence on it. Sorry for ranting and there is a lot more id like to say but this is a pretty big comment as is.
      Edit: I also liked the pointing out how overhaul doesn’t enjoy violence, he’s not like shigaraki, he isn’t a sadist, he’s like you said, more of a machine in the way he thinks.

    Somethimg else about overhaul the way I see it is given how his men follow his orders out of fear or loyalty he is blindsided by the league.
    He has the truth forcing guy ask "did Shigaraki say anything about betraying us." Not "do you plan to betray us" two very different questions that he does not think of since he assumes Shigaraki is the boss and that they wouldn't do anything they were not told to do
    I find this intersting that this part of his mindset led to a fatal mistake since the league played a decent hand in the undoing.
    In my mind it's the lawful organized evil not understating the more chaotic ragtag league that has something closer to real friendship than a hierarchy

    Brilliant video. It really helps putting Kai into a new light, as he's such a difficult character to read. I liked the way you explored his relationship with the Yakuza boss and how that's an essential factor in understanding his character, which clarified a lot about his psyche for me. I also really enjoyed how you interpreted his perspective on Deku's last punch in the anime. Since it's an adaptation first, I always feel a little cynical in relation to the fights (since it mostly cuts/changes some small details that I personally like better in the manga). But your view on it really recontextualized that moment for me, which I initially thought of as just a little too dramatic. But looking back on it now, the last moments of the arc are all about showing Overhaul's point of view on the matter. So yeah, I guess in that regard, the anime did a good job after all. Overall, pretty awesome analysis! Keep it up, man. I look forward to your next videos!

      Thank you so much for the kind words! Yeah, the anime's adaptation of fights can change a lot of important moments for the worse, but here I really felt it only added to the source material. Nothing about Deku punching Overhaul in the manga really conveyed anything specific so taking that moment and running in a different direction is totally fine in my book. Hey man! Not trying to be pushy but do you still plan to give your thoughts on the video? I’m just genuinely curious about other people’s thoughts and I just thought if your comment so I figured I’d check to see if you had gotten back. Either way, have a great one and thanks for watching in the first place.

      @@KirbySonicTeam I'm here now, no worries. I feel this video is by far one of the most inciting than any MHA analysis vids, I've seen. I just watched it again, before typing this. And it stand imposing with a balance of softness and hardness. This time around, it was even more pristine with the visuals, and your commentary didn't fall behind in the slightest. I'm actually surprised, you at how well composed you are; and the fact that your presence isnt overbearing but tranquil... Being shown in this well thought-out presentation, has got me to see you in a now renewed light.
      I will admit, the part where Chisaki is realizing that his no longer usable to revive his boss; it is satisfying that I didn't catch that fully, to remember, plus to be truthful this was better timing for me personally... To watch this video, since I technically loved the next arc after this arc more, and lastly truly wasn't sure wholeheartedly this arc before this vid. It may have been the head space I was in, and knowing Mirio lost his quirk (although, I was commending him when he stood his ground and got Erie away from Overhaul hands). Made me think, it was more important from recalling the time it was spoke in the story, that the worst villians of them all are hiding; and lo and behold it's true. I don't mind this arc, I commend it for staying true to the direction Horikoshi-sensei intended. Sure we could have gotten more of the girls (that wasn't my problem), but this was an extreme example of why, I shouldn't have taken this arc at face value the first time after it ended. There were truly some life and death situations that shouldn't have been chalked up, as "ok". There really were, times long after this arc, that I am able to feel/view the gravity of the past of this story's arcs to commend it to the present time of MHA story. This video, did not technically just made me fall back in love with MHA all-over again, no, it renewed my loss of interest to ever even think of pickibg this arc back up into something I'm now content with... Thank you, and Kor for giving your time to this project. If there was one thing I could try to nitpick on, it is that there isn't more collab vids like this from you two.
      I'm Hopeful, and really am looking forward to seeing more thought-driven pieces like this, told with the incentive to keep me coming back down the line...Keep at it regardless, if that day never comes. You got grit, and command to boot. 🤞🏾

    At times, MHA's writing can really frustrate me, but there's aspects of it that I think touch on superpowers in ways that other media just don't.
    The Todoroki family's story delves into the moral problems with pursuing designer babies.
    Stain reveals the ways in which an overabundance of heroes can create complacency and weakness, as well as lead to offshoots that are less concerned with actual heroism.
    Likewise, Overhaul seeks to break the means and mindsets that have led to this culture of heroes and villains entirely. He has possibly the most foundational opposition to the setting itself.
    The thing is, as Lemillion's story shows, just because you take someone's capacity to be a hero, doesn't mean that you truly destroy their desire to be one. Everybody is seeking purpose, and, for many heroes, especially of the younger generation, they've already set their sights on becoming heroes and are prepared to commit themselves fully to that, and their brushes with death and the risks posed to the people around them have only reinforced that. Despite it all, people like Lemillion stay determined to get back on that track and be the only thing they ever imagined being.
    Chisaki is a very straightforward person, and wants to fix things in a very direct, physical way, but he struggles and ultimately fails to understand or reshape the people underneath the costumes, and this becomes a major point of weakness for him that ultimately results in his downfall and the failure of all his successes.

    So are you going to talk about shigaraki or the league of villains next, I know you said if we're looking for more videos we won't find them here but the last part of the video being shigaraki saying we're next feels like the lead in to talk about them next

    • @KirbySonicTeam
      @KirbySonicTeam  4 роки тому +2

      That was more of just a way to show who would be succeeding Overhaul. As I say at the end of the video, “this world has out grown him.” So showing shigaraki was a way to show the next generation of villains who will go farther than him and his way of doing things.

    I don't know Y everyone likes this arc.. I mean don't get me wrong I like wat it did for everyone involved except for Deku... He never learnt anything he never changed or grown.. That's so fucked up cause his the main character... Great video though

    • @KirbySonicTeam
      @KirbySonicTeam  4 роки тому +6

      Thanks for the comment and for watching! Deku did learn something, he learned exactly what he was told by Nighteye he would learn which was who was more worthy of OFA. And by the end of the arc he sees how he was unable to defeat Chisaki on his own and how so many people had to carry him to victory. So he decides to give Mirio the power but is rejected. The series doesn’t take the main character and have him overcome the obstacle this time. Midoriya has to accept that he isn’t good enough now and YES there may be someone better than you. But he was chosen anyway. So he has to deal with it. It’s a negative character arc for lack of a better word. An arc where Midoriya has to take stock of where he’s at and grow. The cultural festival is the culmination of this arc where Deku is able to make up for so many of his physical downfalls in the overhaul battle by getting long ranged attacks, and finally coming to a better understanding of his path as a hero when he tells Gentle he wants to be a hero who can show those people who believed in him or are hurting (aka Eri) a bright future. This is different from what he told Mirio at the start of the overhaul arc. Back then he said he wanted to be the greatest hero who always wins and always saved. But in the overhaul arc he saw first hand that he couldn’t win on his own and he couldn’t save nighteye. He now has a clearer and much simpler goal. To simply work to make a bright future, which could mean anything at any time, and for this occasion it meant making sure Eri could smile. That’s character growth if I ever saw it. Characters don’t have to make drastic changes or even grow to be well written because some characters fulfill different roles. But Deku is a character who started the series with the correct mindset but lacked all the practical and mental capabilities to live up to his dreams. So every change he does get is a simple modification in his mindset and abilities, all so his drive to help people can come out to its fullest potential and so he can someday truly be the worlds greatest hero.

      @@KirbySonicTeam I see what you mean and thank you for clearing this up for me.... Cause I view the Overhaul arc as it's own story just like how most arcs in my hero are normally structured but looking at it with the gentle arc I see your point.. I guess my problem was it wasn't explode in a satisfying way but my hero acadamia is allowed to make some mistakes here and there

    • @KirbySonicTeam
      @KirbySonicTeam  4 роки тому +4

      The overhaul arc was pretty ambitious with a lot of its ideas and if you read the manga it did a lot of really cool stuff with its art as well. For some, aspects like Dekus arc might not hit as hard as it did for me. But I really respect the author for actively trying to break down his protagonist by presenting a potential better one in mirio. I’ve never seen something like that before. Usually the hero would rise to occasion but this time he doesn’t. For some that’s not satisfying but for me it was amazing.
      If you want another reason I really like the Overhaul arc then to watch my “Appreciating Eri” video as I’d love to get your thoughts on it too :) thanks for your time!

      Ehh, that’s not entirely accurate. He didn’t want to fight in those moments. He still wanted to 1. Take over the underground and use the League’s name to do it. He didn’t care to help them and didn’t care about his own people. He would have sacrificed every member of the Yakuza and The League to further his gain.
      2. He didn’t want to fight the heroes, because he wanted to keep torturing a young girl for his gain. He just wanted to do it without someone stopping him.
      He’s got complexity but he’s an incredibly selfish and evil person.
