  • I was lucky enough to get one of my favourite all time bass players down to the studio in NYC so we could talk all things about "chords on bass"... and waaaay more...
    And when I say "bass royalty"... I mean it...
    He's shared the stage with peeps such as... Eric Clapton, Carlos Santana, Taj Mahal, Buddy Guy, Billy Gibbons, Phil Lesh, Johnny Winter, Bonnie Raitt, Sheryl Crow, Tedeschi Trucks, was a founding member of Dead and Company with John Mayer, and in 2012, he received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award for his 15 year contribution to the Allman Brothers Band as the longest running bassist in the band’s history.
    You guessed who it is yet?!
    Yep, the one and only Oteil Burbridge (whoooop!).
    As always, see you in the shed...
    Scott

  • @gforce152
    @gforce152 6 років тому +1

    When Oteil talks about chord melody and demos a voicing in the key of E he then seems to harmonize that voicing down the scale. Is that what he means by chord voicing? Is it basically harmonizing the diatonic scale using alternate voicing? He is amazing BTW I followed him via the Allman Brothers and just love his stuff! Thanks!

    • @sydrose13
      @sydrose13 6 років тому +1

      gforce152 chord voicing in the way he's doing it can essentially be anything. You can harmonize the scale any way you like really (whatever sounds good to you). As long as the melody note - the note on top which Otie referred to as the root - is from that E major scale. I like experimenting with different chord voicings keeping the same melody (doesn't have to be a root note) on top. It can be a great way to discover new progressions or potential reharmonizations. You can try it with different chord types, tritones, or just different inversions of the same chord with a different melody note. I think that's what you meant by your question, in which case yes! Tons of options!

  • @pdao99
    @pdao99 6 років тому

    can someone shed light on what he said at 1:43? when he said that on the bottom is a maj or min 2nd and on the top is a maj or min 6th...but in relation to what chord? the E dorian? or is it something else?

    • @gigabroly
      @gigabroly 6 років тому +2

      He's talking about the intervals he's using between each note of the chord. Position 1, from bottom to top (not including the E drone) : Note 1, note 2 is a major second up, and note 3 is a minor sixth up from note 2. Position 2 : Note 1, minor second up, major sixth up. Position 3 : Note 1, major second up, major sixth up. In the video, he's playing around E dorian scale, using only these voicings. Try to find which notes (which will be played as "note 1") match which chord shapes into the scale. :)

    It's crazy to hear these tenured pros talk about losing their reading chops etc. There seems to be some gatekeeping in the bass community on sight reading, like he says he wouldn't recommend losing the skill but it's a very human thing to admit that he just moved away from keeping that skill fresh, because he didn't really use it.
