Great input, Thank you. I was unsure of how the assembly came out of the tank and with that decided to do it internally but in the future will go for the complete removal. The tank was already off the bike for a paint job.
You basically have it down. But as you saw through trial and error, all those hoses and wires CAN and should be carefully disconnected and the fuel filter canister and assembly can come out. You can do your filter change out and away from the bike and be able to properly seat the o ring and canister with the print clip with lil to no issue. If that clip is upside down it can be a dirty pecker to get back in. Also I don't think you need to take the tank off just make sure the tank is low on fuel
I want to sincearly thank you for making good this video. I reinstalled my fuel pump last night and I ended up rolling to O ring over the first notch on the fuel line. I thought it was wrong but I didn't want to force it in the other way. I woke up today questioning my own ring decision. I searched the Web for an answer to the corresponding to our ring placement. I called my local moco dealer twice, no answer. Finally an hour later right when I'm about to give up I find your video. I now just have to open th3 tank back up and fix it. I did install a new gasket answer screws. I hope I don't have to now buy all new hardware because it isn't cheap. I'm sure it will be fine and there is only one way to find out.
got my unit out for paint. Once you unsnap the fuel line and unplug the electric connect it is fairly easy to lift the complete pump assembly out, you just move it forward a small twist and its out. Much easier to change the filter with the unit out.
thanks harley, for making what should be a super simple in line filter that you can have easy access to, that has worked fine for many vehicles for many years, into an overpriced f---cking hassle. no respect for your engineering after the evo went. as far as i'm concerned, i can buy 2 or 3 yamahas for the price of one of your low models, ride them harder and farther with less maintenance.
I recomend to take all fuel pump out, did you see the filter that is on the bottom of the pump itself? If that little filter you changed was nasty imagine the first stage! So basically you just did half the job, better than none I guess...
I know this is an old video, but could someone tell me the purpose of the purple wire? I just changed a fuel pump and couldn't figure out the reason for the purple wire. It looks like it only connects to plastic.

Just an FYI , the top plate gasket is cheaper at your Harley shop that the one from Drag Specialties....

You know the whole assembly comes out easy there is a spring that allows the assembly to fold. Then it will lift out.
I have the whole assembly out of the tank and that U-Clip slides in & is in the groove but I haven't got it to slide through the exit holes.
so you pulled the dirty filter out inside the tank and all the dirt in the gas in the filter went back into the tank :)
Why did you change it? Was it running bad? How many miles were on it at that time? Chuck
