Dr. Strangelove is the most important movie ever, and even if it wasn't, it would be my favorite movie. The importance is that Kubrick, by creating this film, opened the eyes of so many people, including policymakers, to the absurdity of resorting to nuclear weapons. I hope people keep watching it. There are a lot of bombs out there.

Well, movie-wise, Peter Sellers is (I think) the acknowledged superstar of Dr S. But I feel like pointing out how amazingly hilarious George C Scott was. Perfect comic timing, of course, and no doubt realized by the amazing directorial skills of Stanley Kubrick.

Sort of it was realized by Kubrick, but he just let George c Scott riff and a lot of what you see is him going way over the top and trying whatever they think might work. As much of a control freak as Stanley Kubrick was as a director, this was one of the films where he really let his actors explore.

Slim Pickens was a legit cowboy as being a rodeo clown requires knowing the thinking and moves of rodeo livestock well enough to distract them away from a fallen rider, putting themselves in the greatest risk of harm instead of the rider. He showed up for Blazing Saddles with his own horse and camped out at the set while other actors and crew stayed in regular accommodations. He was a great actor who appeared in many classics, including the original Ocean's Eleven with the Rat Pack.

My Dad was a career nuclear submariner. He was an FBM (Fleet Ballistic Missile Submarine), executive officer and a commander. All through the 1960's and early 1970's. It was, and is a very serious mission to be on those patrols. This was the main arm of the Nuclear Triad that included airborne bombers, land based missile silos and the Navyl's submarine force. Although SAC (Strategic Air Command) is long gone, the submarine arm of the Triad is still actively involved in nuclear deterrence. Great movie with a poignant message. Mr. Kubrick at his finest.

As a kid living in Colorado Springs, with Norad just a few miles away, we practiced duck and cover at Cheyenne Elementary. An interjection from a kid who was born mid-year, 1960, with a ‘similar’ take on things from my 3rd grade elementary school, Miami, about 1965 (why it was not earlier, I’ll only put down to memory, and/or lack thereof). We were instructed to ‘duck & cover’ ‘under’ our paltry, standard, metal and wood desks, but not for a nuclear attack, as that was never mentioned, at all, but rather, as a ‘protection’ against hurricanes! I kid you not. And, Hurricane Betsy, with wind gusts at an estimated peak of 160 mph, was damned-close to experiencing something like a ‘pretend,’ ie, Fairy Tale, nuclear attack, especially given the destruction that would be likely in, and around, South Florida. I’ll suppose this d&c ‘oddity’ was because Miami was a principle ‘target,’ for both nukes, and, hurricanes.

It is indeed horribly sobering that such a thing needs to exist. But I have one question for any too far to the left pie in the sky doe eyed philosophizers out there that think they can pontificate on instant disarmament..... Why do the police carry guns/truncheons? Its really a simple question. And when they can answer it honestly without their echo chamber regurgitant, then maybe, just maybe, they'll have the mental capacity to understand MAD. Because its not 'if you launch we launch.' Its much, MUCH, darker. MAD implies 'if anyone launches, everyone launches. At everything.' There will be no world left to rule. There will be no one left to rule it. Everything you hold dear, anywhere, will melt in nuclear fire. So, as the Doctor said, before we light the fireworks hows about we all grow the fuck up, gather around the table, and "do what we were all going to do from the beginning, SIT. DOWN. AND. TALK."
Regulation and rules will not prevent shitty behavior. Humanity needs an evolution of morals. No matter your creed or faith, do not kill, do not rape, do not steal are codes of conduct we can all agree with. The moment we all agree to simply stop being dicks to each other, our species will be headed towards a much brighter future. One not illuminated by a mushroom cloud......

US policy today is suppose to protect NATO countries by treaty. But we and our leaders are so messed up , I don’t think we will risk even one American life to save Europe. You are on your own. UK and France have nuclear capabilities so it’s up to them.

Although this piece is from 9 years ago, Spike's sanctimonious, typically liberal comments turn out incredibly prophetic when related to the current administration. Who are the war mongers today Spike, who are the killers that seem to care nothing for the life of others, but their own? Get a clue dude, it is not a political condition or affiliation, it is a human condition and has been true as long as man has walked this earth. Now we just see the powers that be perfecting it from the half-hearted efforts of the past.

Kids these days are all stressed and whiny about climate change, which may effect their children decades from now. They don't know what stress is. Their (grand)parents lived with the possibility that they could be vaporized tomorrow. To this they say, "OK, Boomer." To them I say let's force you onto a bus, subject you to 6 weeks of intense physical training, then we'll fly you halfway around the world, put a machine gun in your hands, and tell you to kill those guys before they kill you. That's stress, and there was no "safe space."

    List of close calls: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_nuclear_close_calls
And there were more, much more, if you count for every single false "missile start", you come into the thousands. Imagine the good things you could've done with that money, work, ingenuity - this could've been a different world, wouldn't it not been for the old stone heads full of greed. And that's what they will say about our time, too, in the furture, and so on. Change it, little by little, care for your neighbors, try to avoid the worst products, be a little less cynical, help each other, don't fall for the hate-propaganda, trust your own human sense - just for all who didn't get the message. And care for your bodily fluids.
