Seattle's Tent City 3: a Solution to Lack of Housing and Shelter Beds.

- Los Angeles Times reported transient encampments and car camping grew 85% countywide in the last two years. This week the Los Angeles City Council voted to make it easier for authorities to clean up homeless camps, but Seattle has found another solution by embracing tent communities.
With the lack of affordable housing continuing to be a crisis along with the growing amount of people who cannot find employment with a livable wage, tent encampments are increasing across America. There is no community rural or urban that is immune from homelessness and tent encampments. Directly and indirectly tent cities effect you!
Over the last few years I have visited several tent communities. Most are just a group of people who have come together for social and survival needs. Occasionally a tent encampment will grow, and if there is the right leadership, the group can evolve into well-organized community.
My first experience was when I visited Seattle’s Nickelsville back in 2009, and being an old hippie at heart, I fell in love the self-governed tent community model. I have visited Nickelsville a few times over the years. Dignity Village in Portland is another wonderful community. In the feature film @home, the film makers follow me into Ann Arbor’s “Camp Take Notice”, but sadly, the community no longer exists.
This video is of my visit to Tent City 3 in Seattle last year. Seattle is the one city that I am aware of that embraces tent communities and incorporates the model into their homeless services. Although tent encampments are not the best solution, when housing and shelter beds are not available, adding tent cities to the continuum is a smart move.

Only the rich can cause so much trouble there's a homeless problem! We must get our government back from those who had a fascist coup in 1963!
Not that I'm saying Mexicans are the problem but they have consumed all of the cheap housing.
P.A. How many homeless Mexicans have you seen? Not any where I live! They are pretty new to our county, and they have taken over some of our jobs. like painting, yard work, logging etc. We only had a couple of kids in my school when I was young. Now I don't know! It's really sad!
I lived there in 2008....most people there where freeloaders and drug addicts.....they treated me well ...thought.....i worked while i was there....and had no issues with the tenants
Why aren't we taxing the foreign millionaires who are buying up the properties and hiking up cost? These people need our help! We need to tax people who buy homes as investments rather than to dwell in.
I hope you find a good solution that involves getting cost of housing down. Building affordable housing is admirable but will it stop more from becoming homeless? Cost of living here is stupidly high and I hope for these people's sake that eventually the dream of owning their own home will be a possibility.

*Coley Love* when you have Real Estate Carpetbaggers who are just in this to make a quick buck the cost of buying a home will be so high that people will eventually move away because they will not be able to afford to live in Seattle anymore. Seattle will be another Detroit. I want to run for Mayor of Seattle in 2021 and try and put a stop to all of this crap. First we need to do a Class Action Lawsuit against the state of Washington to get the 1981 law repealed that restricts cities and towns from enacting rent restrictions of any kind on any property owner or landlords for jacking up the rent. I love Seattle way to much to allow this to happen any longer and the current Mayor and city council doesn't seem to want to anything substantial to fix the cost of living, homelessness problem or housing crises. I am already talking to Boeing and Greyhound on the Homelessness issue for help in this matter. If you want to know how they would be of assistance please message me and I will explain more. Alana Weaver - I really like your thinking and agree with most everything you said! I stumbled upon a couple of videos yesterday that I feel could be extremely beneficial if you're interested in helping me spread the information. I'll link them below this comment. One is on a new Tiny Home Community for the Homeless called EDEN VILLAGE in Springfield, Missouri. The first tenants are just now moving in, so there isn't history yet but I have faith it's going to work! It was developed by a non-profit called The Gathering Tree who originally started a Day Center for the homeless in 2010. Mark did a story on Eden Village and that’s the video I linked. The other video isn't about homelessness, it's about co-living and a young woman who turned her vision into a business called PODSHARE 4 years ago (now with several locations all over LA); but the idea could easily be customized for transition "housing" for the homeless. She's thought of everything and it's brilliant because she's making use out of abandoned buildings and warehouses bypassing the codes necessary for normal housing! You don't know me, but I really want to do something to help and obviously traditional affordable housing is in short supply...so I'm trying to find other solutions. You seem like a very smart woman, so I thought I'd take a chance and pass on the info to you. Do with it what you want but I appreciate you at least reading my comment! 😊

"Tent cities" exist again today, as they did during the Great Depression, as an option of desperation. In fact, tent cities ARE refugee camps for those who were effectively shut out of our job market/economy. The US provides trillions of dollars of aid to foreign countries, yet utterly turns its back on our own poor. The reason we don't provide aid for our jobless poor (and many of the unemployable) isn't that America can't afford it, but because our middle class demanded, "Not a crumb for the poor!"

I think it's wonderful that a group of powerful people have chosen to help a group of severely disadvantaged people by allowing them to camp in a sort of dense or even concentrated fashion. It seems like a great idea. We should look to history to see how these types of public services work out in terms of delivering much needed solutions to the targeted population.
ronstrelecki Camping is Never fun when one is Homeless. And it is really crappy when the tents are practically on top of eachother.
I think it's appalling that the general population maintain, "Not a crumb for the poor!" "Camping out" is not fun when you have no options, from bug bites to harsh weather, knowing there's no home to go back to. It takes money to get the employable into apartments, fed and sheltered, so they can to pursue jobs -- and a recognition of the fact that jobs aren't available to all. It takes legitimate social services to help those who are physically or mentally too ill to maintain employment.

I understand you want to help the homeless but stop it. You are making the homeless problem worse by doing what you are doing. People will not to make their station in life better if they are able to stay they way they are and become comfortable with being homeless.

what if a person in a power wheelchair was to show up on your doorstep would you have a place to put them and be able to charge their power chair and keep it out of the bad weather? I feel what you are doing is a very good thing. God Bless You.

This critical issue isn't about the lack of places to live, but about our choice as a nation to utterly turn our backs on those in need. We know that not everyone can work, and that there aren't jobs for all. The US shipped out a massive share of our jobs since the 1980s, ended actual welfare in the 1990s, and we pretend there are no consequences.
From FDR to Reagan, the US had implemented policies and programs that took the country to its height of wealth and productivity. When Reagan was first elected, launching the long campaign against the poor, the overall quality of life in the US was rated at #1. By the time Obama was elected, this had already plunged to #43, and we can no longer adequately compete in the modern world market. Complex issues, but there is no way to restore the country without legitimately addressing our poverty crisis.

+DH Fabian the real problems are created by government state local and fed.. the state could take a hunk of land make it exempt and give a place for people to live and use to get on their feet but then the police courts and rehabs lose theor clients.. this is the farm and we are the cattle peoples. trying to force people back into the system that screwed abused and abdoned them is not something most people look forward to
These people need to be treated as humans. They need adequate, safe food and shelter now. A tent is not safe, dreams of a garden and fishing are not reality. People need services (medical, social, etc.) They need to be part of the community. Your ideas are idealistic to the point of being unrealistic.

DH Fabian yes they are..go sleep hard in a rural area and you better have some skills. The hard drugs are an issue and mental illness alcohol are the big problems . But most have not many skills bad credit and a history or criminal past.. so having the basic skills to feed yaself with some easy labor can lighten the load on food banks and charity if you can fish farm and recycle.. but the culprit is mostly local state and government not allowing people to exist outside of their failing model of how you have to live according to them to make money off of you..you cant understand that and wont. but take a look around lots of people with none of the problems I noted above are homeless too..the system needs to be rebuilt ..its failing hard
