Gee had amazing scientific knowledge, but the lovely Rev had an exceptional grasp of general knowledge over the three rounds. So glad Leeds won - very satisfying to beat Oxbridge.
A thousand thank-you's. The Leeds team is so good, I do believe they could compete against the students. Henry Gee is a beast (a positive statement, of course). Thx again, for the uploads.
@@heliotropezzz333 There's a similar "default response" with Verdi and opera, although that even transcends nations! Indeed, there was an instance this series where a clip of Beethoven's _Fidelio_ was played and they named the composer as Verdi, even though the language being sung was very clearly German.
Really enjoyed this series! A welcome distraction from the Antipodean apocalypse we are living through presently. Congrats to Leeds and to Gee in particular as MVP. 🏆Thank you 🐨🌷
What a fabulous final! I loved it as much as a good student episode! Both teams were impressive, I thought, but MVP Gee was a stand-out, as was Coles. Thank you DoP for making the UC Christmas break so enjoyable. Wishing you a Happy New Year from America!
Hopefully we [Leeds] can get onto the student's televised rounds one year. A rather poor record for us as a Russell Group University in that competition. I'll pretend I chose to study there knowing we'd win this one. Well done men! And thanks for the upload, DoP.
You do of course realise the oploader gets paid money for all of those 26K views (at this moment) without having to pay a penny for the trouble? This show was on public TV, put online by the BBC, and used by the uploader to make money for him/herself. Not exactly the most charitable act. UA-cam needs to do something about that anomaly.
Funny how I seldom can answer any questions, but nearly always those they can't answer. For example, the quotation by Christopher Hitchens, the picture of Ruskin, his criticism of Canaletto, and Francis Bacon on solitude.
Thank you, says it all really! After all these years I still can't listen to the intro without expecting to hear the name Bamber Gascoigne. However I can't think of a more suitable successor who's not currently dead.
Paxman said goodbye in the reverse order! He generally (always?) says goodbye to the losers first. This time he said goodbye to the winners first. On purpose or just a slip?
I would like to see a US version of the Christmas challenge with Trump (Bachelor of Science degree in Economics, Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, 1968), and 3 GOP senators/White House staff (who would never get to answer) as one of the teams - the team captain would likely have the 'best answers'!
I would have questioned the wisdom of having a snapper on the team, but as the guy himself admits, he brought absolutely nothing to the picnic, less even than the pop star vicar, so I guess that says it all. Not even name recognition, I would suspect.

Finally it's a Caravaggio
I don't think the woman in the previous round had ever seen a Caravaggio as his work looks nothing like the ones she was presented with.
@@heliotropezzz333 Indeed, and one of those "Caravaggios" (not!) was a canal scene... bit of a giveway, there!
@@ftumschk Yes, I got the impression that she knew it was an Italian painter and Caravaggio was the only Italian painter's name she could think of.
Helen Trope is Caravaggio’s style of painting distinctive and if so how?

Thanks very much for taking the time to upload the Christmas Special rounds.

Much appreciated the series, thank you.
Thanks for the upload. Leeds was very impressive over all 3 of their appearances
Well, that was fun. Here. Have some more praise for the uploads - you're certainly deserving of all of it. Happy 2020!
15:30 Probably because they're behind, Paxman shamelessly makes no mention of McElvoy's conferring with Mosey on this starter question.
... and that is why the recovering paleontologist is a senior editor of Nature! :P Good job, sir!
What a fabulous final! I loved it as much as a good student episode! Both teams were impressive, I thought, but MVP Gee was a stand-out, as was Coles. Thank you DoP for making the UC Christmas break so enjoyable. Wishing you a Happy New Year from America!
Thanks for uploading this special. Wow! What a round!
Enjoyed these...thanks so much for posting!
Leeds was lucky to have so many science starter and bonus questions here especially that they have the senior editor of Nature in their team.

For ten points, which non-Russell Group University has won the competition twice?
Celestial Teapot 🤔. All I can think of is Open University, without consulting the official records again.
Greetings from Canada! I've really enjoyed this series, and I thank you very much for uploading it.
Thank you for all of the Christmas specials from Greece.
Very much appreciate all the uploads! I do like Clements' clothes - though I know this is irrelevant
Thanks for uploading the whole series.
Thank you for the upload!
Thank you so much for taking the trouble to upload all these. I really enjoyed them. Leeds were excellent, especially Gee and the lovely Rev Coles.

Thanks for doing this. Happy new year.
15:31 definite conferring there, probably saying "who composed the nutcracker?". How did they miss that?!
Daniel Dennett is still alive and is a phil prof at my college.
6:29 CH lives on. Long may he do so!
No doubt about it, Coles is a smart and funny man who deserves all his notoriety.
Another in the chorus of thanks. These were a highlight of my Christmas.
Gee that was exciting!
" you can still catch up" ......lol. No you can't.
But it sure lit a (small) fire under them for a time!
Gee Coles and Freedland are outstanding!
@kiloscott he was pretty much the only good (or contributing) member of wadham college
I guessed that black tulip one. I'm good at guessing but that was my best guess yet :D
The V&A 'Three Graces' is co-owned by the National Gallery of Scotland
22:07 IT WAS CARAVAGGIO!!!

Causus Belli - I learned that one from watching Seinfeld.
It's casus, not causus.
Thank you!
Thank you very much for uploading these, much appreciated.
Holy Gee! What a performance!

Afterthought, Don't thing I've ever seen an Open University Alumni team in one of these xmas shin-digs.
@@raysutton2310 Possibly because OU students tended to be mature and if you managed to find a team now, they'd probably all be their dotage.
Thank you for the subtitles. Will you keep uploading the students' competition with subs?
I won't be uploading the student series, but I did ask Dave Garda if he might consider adding them to his uploads.
Always happy when a red brick university beats an Oxbridge college.
I'll take Mosey's smile and Gee's brain, thank you very much :)
Brilliant. What a brain box mr Gee
Gee had science sewn up. Coles had arts and humanities sewn up - a great and powerful combination.
365 total points! Dang.
Thanks!

Merry Caravaggio, everyone!
It is always hard to see the audience clapping in the end.
En Kefalitis? En Sephalitis, Solomon. So weird.
Gang of Four FTW
I am Timothy Allen

This show is too easy! I get every question correct!
czech republic is incorrect, it is
Czechia
No its not. Czechia the short name, Czech Republic is the long name. It's the same as calling France, the French Republic
