I live on a military base. Just as soon as the Nerd realized the third party controller wasn't for the 5200, a mortar went off in one of the ranges nearby. Priceless.

Still cracks me up he goes through all the trouble to get the huge extension cord because the tv cord isn't long enough and doesn't reach the outlet... only to just move the television set afterwards anyways.

I'm not so sure he's acting there. Those TVs were clunky and awkward as fuck, also weighed a ton. I totally believe it if he actually dropped it.
happened to me a few times when I was a kid.
Best part is moving the TV was unnecessary. Only reason the box didnt reach the TV is that the power cord went through the cupboard due to trying to hook it up to the main TV eariler. He could've just unplugged it, pulled the cord off the back and plug it back in. But i do think the whole thing was done on purpose for the video.

Yes the horrible 5200 was a 8-bit Atari computer with a bit of a upgrade.
it's funny watching this because even today, over 30 years later, some people still look crazy when I say Atari 5200 & question it. That's how bad it was. But I thought it was cool at the time because it was all I had until the awesomeness of the NES came out.

I think it’s fair to say that one of the main reasons why AVGN has lasted so long is because he has not only had good writing but even in his earlier videos like this, he had good production value. So you knew that he put a lot of time and effort into his work and it shows
I agree, on a stroll through memory lane and rewatching AVGN. It's just as good, or even better than I remember it from my teens

I love the way these older episodes sound. They have sound effects and music from games. The newer episodes are really compressed. (Also AVGN talks a lot faster in these.)

I usually throw on an episode of AVGN while I eat and today was the Atari 5200 (obviously, since I'm commenting on it) but what you won't realize is how I almost skipped this episode. What a mistake that would have been. This just moved up in my top 5 favourite episodes.

I had one. But it was the 2nd design with 2 ports not 4. And amazingly, the analog joystick never broke. But I know they were notorious for breaking

This is one of the first AVGN video that made me a fan. Just want to say for the record... my 5200 worked great when I was a kid. The games had better graphics and playability than the 2600. the were the closest we could get (at the time) to arcade versions at home.
Even now, when the nerd goes to get the beer out of the console, it makes me laugh.

This is arguable. The answer can be PC, PS2, Atari, SEGA Master System. Everyone argues for different reason too. I'd bet "Windows DOS", being a series of OS and any game compatible, is actually the answer, despite modern Windows being unable to play them by default since Vista.
There are still home brew games being made for the 2600 as well.
I remember playing these games, I used to play after school with my dad every day. I had no idea about video games back then so I played the shit out of anything, I just mashed buttons and see what would happen. Sound effects used to, uh... creep-me-out. This was me - 9:09
