Missing all the solo play and other stuff in a box thats approximately 8 times bigger is rough. One of the things our group really liked about the original Star Realms was the box being so small it functioned as a great side game between other events, or could be pulled out of a daily carrying bag at a restaurant without issue. I get the box being bigger feels like more value, but its a real bummer the box is half empty and doesnt have space for cards in sleeves, combined with the cheap "board." As much as I like the styling, the lack of a mini rulebook and currency cards to go in a deckbox feels like a bit of a deal breaker for me, but maybe theyre skewing more towards a premium product for board gamers. Would have been really nice to see this with artwork instead of screen caps, as the cards look worse and less legible. I really appreciate your review, but unfortunately I think the original version is a lot more functional of a game for me. Damn, a few friends and I were really looking forward to this release.
Yeah, this definitely caters more to Trek fans as an entry point than something that really stands out on its own. FWIW, the original Star Realms core box that this emulates also didn't include solo play. No core boxes did until Frontiers. That said, if you're looking for a Star Trek DBG with more depth (in this case, a LOT more), Captain's Chair by the creator of Imperium is coming soon. If you preorder via the company site (WizKids, I think), there's a free promo pack included.
FWIW, if you're looking for a Trek DBG, and you want something WAY more complex, Star Trek: Captain's Chair is coming soon also. It's based on the same engine as Imperium: Classics/Legends/Horizon.
Thank you for posting my friend is legally blind so seeing details matters this kind seals the deal for which version of the game we will be buying. Also the original Star Realms is expandable
FWIW, if you want a version with the best visibility, the new Star Realms Academy is good for that. It's meant for kids/families, but it plays similarly to base SR and uses big, bold iconography so there's not a lot of card reading involved. I've enjoyed it.
At least the mat is cardstock and not just a glossy paper foldout. I liked Star Realms, but the theme was a little boring to me so I couldn't bring myself to keep playing it. The Star Trek IP might help, so I might give it a shot.
Yeah, that's a part of why I prefer Hero Realms over Star Realms these days. Granted, HR is more geared toward cooperative and solo, which is a big plus anyway for me, but SR never felt really like there was much to connect with, even when they started introducing the Command Decks with actual faces to the leaders of each side. It's all just impersonal, samey-looking ships to me, so I have to overlook the theming and such when playing SR, whereas at least with the Trek set, there's more of a connection to the ships from watching the series over the decades.
Strange, the world without currency gets a trading game.😂 The layout and icons look lacklustre compared to the original. I love the artwork in the original, so I don't think I need this reskin. But im sure a few will enjoy it, and new players will get on board. I have many other Star Trek fixes. I'm gonna have to pass on this. Great review. Very thorough.
Thank you for this review.

Star Trek edition has worse graphics than Realms, that makes Realms more visually appealing.
Thanks for this comparison! Great video Nathan
Thanks for posting this video.i will be looking for the game when it comes out. I'm a Star Trek fan and a Star Realms fan so this is a no brainer.

Awesome! We love Star Realms, and hadn't heard about this at all!
