Very cool video. A cool idea could be to do a sequel for the fastest birds, but exclude flight speed. Using things like running and swimming speed. If that makes sense
I have to commend you on a very accurate account with regards to your imagery and bird references. Being an ornithologist myself, this is the first time that I have seen a documentary on birds, that each image/clip represents the correct species being presented. Well done! A definite subscriber!
Peregrines are my favorite animals of all time, always loved super fast birds. It’s so rare to find channels that cater to such specific niches such as this and I have binged practically every video of yours as I love learning, thanks for the frequent awesome content
If this were a "Fastest Animals" list instead, there is a possibility that the Mexican Free-Tailed Bat would compete with these birds. While no maximum speed is written down, they are said to fly over 160 km/h.
I used to live in an appartment that had a huge Swift nesting place under the roof and since my balcony was on the top floor they would come swooping in just a few centimeters over your head to enter the nexting area. Also really cool when they where prepearing to leave for the winter, you could hear them rushing about before they would launch in a massive swarm, was really cool if you managed to time them leaving with you sitting on the balcony.
I'd like to see a list like this, but for sustained, horizontal flight, rather than the stoop/dive speed of predators. Perhaps a 'fastest species' of different major bird orders/families would be a little bit unusual eg fastest galliforme, anseriforme, psittacine, columbiforme, ratite etc.
He literally says in the video that would be impossible. And considering they can fly it’s hardly falling. You can only fall at a certain speed and not even close to what they do.
Peregrines are adorable. I watch UK and AUS nests every year. So fast, such elegant plumage and rarely fights between the young, Just found you and subbed up! Enjoyed the deer vid too, had no idea there were so many foreign deer in the UK, thanks for the info! x
I would like for you to comment on whether each speed rating is for dives or level flight. I also suggest that you mention the one physical characteristic necessary for birds to attain high speed flight. Their nose. At high speed, air comes rushing into a bird's nose at high enough speed and high enough pressure to burst a bird's lungs. Really fast birds have a baffle in their noses to slow incoming air.
great video, to add another bird would be the rock dove (aka rock pigeon), they've been known to out speed cars on highways and out maneuver and even out speed peregrine falcons (in a straight line pigeons are faster than peregrine falcons but the falcons are still their top predator). they've been documented flying for hours on end for super long distances. pigeons are underrated when it comes to speed you'd be surprised how fast they are especially racing pigeons.
I think a video on fastest birds in sustained, horizontal flight would likely include pigeons. I suspect that other than the swift, none of the birds from this video would make the top 10.
Can you do an Oddball Freshwater Fish video. Like it could have some animals that it's the only member of it's family to live in Freshwater like that the Burbot is the only freshwater member of the Cod family. Same with the Freshwater Drum being the only drum (the fish not the instrument) that spends it's whole life in freshwater, the Freshwater Blennies, and others.
Biologist: "Alright, I need you to fly as fast as you possibly can when I say, 'now!' If you do, I'll give you all the chimken you can eat." Birb: "Eat my feathery ass!"
A lot of those figures are for dives as opposed to level flight. Weird exception is the Golden Eagle as they have one of the fastest level flight speeds of any bird as well as being the second fastest in a dive.
i think the people that say the peregrine falcon speed doesn’t count need to go watch peregrine falcon attacks. they aren’t just falling at that speed. there’s videos of them attacking preys in a almost horizontal position at that speed. and there is also videos of them attacking prey multiple times within seconds at the speed while being able to change direction and everything
The Eurasian Hobby (Falco subbuteo) is the main predator of Swifts, and there is video showing them catching Swifts. It looks like a small Peregrine, but in terms of aerobatic ability, they are without parallel, and make Peregrines look lumbering. I don't know what their dive speed is, but it's very fast. I don't think the speeds I've seen of 100mph in a dive, are anything like what they are actually capable of. But then they don't often do steep dives, so I suspect their maximum dive speeds have never been measured. Merlin tend to fly very fast in low level horizontal flight.
It's a controlled dive in-flight. When whales dive, we don't say they're not 'swimming'. In the same way, a bird's dive is part of flight. I personally think sustained horizontal flight speed is the more interesting statistic, but to say a controlled dive isn't 'flying' does not provide for a consistent definition.
Excellent content and I do not disagree with anything that you said. However, not mentioning the Hobby was a missed opportunity, as these birds actively prey on Swifts
it annoys me people argue that birds cheat speeds at being the fastest animal on earth due to gravity . but have no clue of aerodynamics , a bird can travel faster than you falling though the air and yet their alot lighter . also cat lovers just dont like the cheetah being dethroned even though a fish is 2nd fastest animal on earth
I understand aerodynamics in regards to the peregrine falcon but it still feels dumb to call it the fastest bird when it’s falling and not flying or anything….
@@awesomeocelot7475a average human air diver weights about 70kg and stoops at a speed at 120 and falcon around 1.5kg stoop at 230 over taking the human diver cause it’s adaptions to being able to cut thought the air, it’s at a much lighter weight that would shatter most animals at that speed . only man’s machine can top that and we need protection and a jet engine. if you threw a other bird like a chicken off a plane it would not travel at the same speed as a falcon cause it’s not got the adaptions and reinforcement to withstand speed and it not aerodynamically built .
You mentioned some of the falcons breeding to create hybrids. Not sure if you know but, ALL falcons can inter-breed. In fact, an American Kestrel can be crossed with a Gyrfalcon!
At least these birds are the fastest FLYERS in the world🦅 The sailfish is the fastest SWIMMER in the world 🐟 But the Cheetah is the Number 1 fastest RUNNER in the world 🐆
The "falconry industry" is the biggest donors to protecting raptors worldwide. The birds taken from the wild are normally flown through the winter and released in spring. A falconer paid to have a line of power poles made safe that wad killing many thousands of sakers a year.
Here's what I learned in this video, and the comment section. Fish: 0 Cats: 0 Birds : 5 I absolutely agree... But put an F in the chat for the fish They need it
The F16 is also one of the fastest (Electronic Computer Controlled)birds ,its even has a nickname, the fighting falcon ! Looking at you lockheed martin😊😉🫡
IMO all the falcon species should be disqualified from the list. They aren't flying, they're diving - ie, falling. Anything taken to a height and dropped will fall pretty fast due to gravity. These lists should be limited to birds like the swift that actually FLY at those high speeds.
Thank you so much for sharing these videos, they're always top quality
thank you i really appreciate the support :)

Yep, "falls quickly" is a pretty lame record to have. Falling isn't flying.

@@anserbauer309 true, most of the birds in this video are birds of that that rely on dive bombing to achieve high speeds (except the swift)
When it comes to actual flight, pigeons are faster than falcons. Falcons are only able to catch pigeons using the surprise of a dive.
@@AdamArcherPigeons yep, that's why i said pigeons are faster in a straight line, falcons are a threat when they have the element of surprise
