Yup. Prince Vlad Tepes Draculea lived between 1431 and 1476. His body supposedly disappeared. 400 years later Bram Stoker wrote Dracula with its main character seemingly based on Prince Dracula.

Vlad Dracula was not "a minor Count in a different part of Transylvania". He was a Prince, the ruler of Wallachia, a country to the south of Transylvania. He was not by any means minor - until his death he defended Europe against the Ottoman invasions.

Wasn't there some type of plan at one point to build at least one or two 'Draculaland' amusement parks in Romania? kind of like Euro Disney but with blood and vampire themed rides to them? :-/
I thought I had read that was in the works.

I am sick and tired of the lies being posted.about Vlad Drăculea, which is how it was spelt in old Romanian. It meant he was the son of Vlad Dracul and Dracul meant Dragon NOT devil in old Romanian, as Vlad Dracul in 1431 was inducted as a member of the Order of the Dragon, a chivalric order founded by Emperor Sigismund in 1408.

I was fortunate enough to have a Romanian friend who told me all about this already. This is a good video for those who don't know the truth about the castle, etc. I guess it can be fun as

@40Pacino We view him as a hero because if it wasn't for him we would have been part of Turkey now, since the Ottoman Empire tried to conquer us, but he managed to take out an empire that was almost 5 times our size. He did that by doing some very crazy things, but we are thankful because we still have our culture and our land because of him.

@eustiutot I don't think Romania is the "vampire country" other Eastern European had vampire myths too. I guess there's more to Romanian myth than vampires. I guess Bram Stoker just picked the country randomly. Ever played Castlevania? Yea, I think he was quite that rich actually^^.

@nikkijaneallison I love Romania as well, I know it has some bad images from people, and there is much wrong with every country- none are perfect. I have found Romanians to be smart, friendly, and all around wonderful. They go out or their way to help Americans by speaking English and they are very adept at the language. Bram Stoker never set foot in the country, but I don't want to go into that here. Love Romania!

For God's sake, the impaling was a common execution method in the era, and the brutality and cruelty of which Vlad the Impaler is accused, was pure propaganda, to justify his arrest by king Matias Corvinus, King of Hungary (he arrested Vlad because he had received orders from the Pope to help the Wallachian prince against the Ottomans - which King Matias did't even want to hear of). Even Baba Novac, one of Michael the Brave's generals, was impaled by Hungarians near the city walls of Koloszvar!!

It's funny how you speak about ignorant Americans who "create a mith (myth) out of their ignorance." I find your entire argument laughable as Bram Stoker (the creator of the Dracula character and myth) was Irish, not American. Why not arm yourself with facts rather than your own ignorance before you begin casting accusations.

@comedyman112 It means devil by association in exactly the same way that the 'serpent/dragon' of the bible is also the devil. Dracul means dragon which in turn means snake which in turn is the biblical satan, hence dracul is used as a name for the devil in his guise as a dragon/snake. vlad lll got called dracul/dragon becaue he belonged to the Order of the Dragon and wore its sigil.

He punished people for not being Christians, and I'm not talking about the Muslims who invaded Romania, because obviously war is cruel. He also systematically eradicated the old boyar class of Wallachia. Seems fair to you? Not to mention the fact multiple sources confirm that he took sadistic pleasure in torturing people.

  • @CandyManMvp
    @CandyManMvp 15 років тому

no it isn't ... it was called so just because he was brutally killing bad people by using a special method : he pushed 'em on a sharp piece of wood.. that type of wood = teapa (its a romanian popular word but i don't know if it is recognized by dictionaries)
From "teapa" - "tepes" (which is kind of an adjective of the word "teapa")

Degeaba le spuneam eu ca nu-i asa, ea era profesoara şi, deci, avea autoritate in materie. :-(

Don't mind him, he is one of the few Romanians whom most likely doesn't even have a clue of his own history, let alone to know Stoker's nationality. I myself am Romanian and don't have anything against Stoker's novel, quite the opposite! The only thing that bothers me is that most people see Vlad as this pshyco, but that's only because of the Hungarians traitors whom are always making fake stories and trying to rewrite history in their favour. Till this day day dream of Transilvania!

Real Vlad Tsepesh was a hero and a defender of his beloved land from the Turks. He WAS extremely cruel on his oponents, as well on the Turks (he used to torture and to slay Turkish officers & soldiers captured in Romanian mountains after their conquering attempts), but that is not the reason for anybody to depict him as a son of the Satan.
People from Balkan remember A LOT of monstruous cruelty from their islamic oppressors, so we surely won't commiserate those victims of count Dracula!! >:)))

Well the Confederate States sure viewed Abe Lincoln as a tyrant, and John Wilkes Boothe shot him and said something like "Thus always to tyrants."
"Honest Abe" wasn't against slavery at all but as the war progressed he saw it fit to free them to create chaos in the south where many blacks who were close to union lines fled. Thus began the great myth that the whole american civil war was about slavery which is nonsense.
Change Abe with George Washington instead.

Yup.. he was a big "Law and Order" guy. Basically if he lived now..... well.. let's say there wouldn't be very many people clogging up the prison system or illegally entering the country. (grin) Good symbol of this.. if any can imagine it. He placed a priceless gold chalice in every town square. They remained there for his entire reign. The story goes that many drank from them freely.. but NO one would dare steal one.
    Imagine that today.

Read the book Dracula! At that time Transylvania was the part of Hungarian Kingdom. And Dracula is a fictional character, he's just based on Vlad Ţepeş. Bram Stoker got the idea of count from stories of Tepes and Erzsébet Báthory, that was told him by Armenius Vámbéry. It's like Mary Shelley's Victor Frankenstein was based on the personality of Lord Byron and Percy Shelley, but Victor Franenstein is not English. And in the book count Dracula tells, that he is Székely, so ZoltanKH was right.
