That first fish was definitely a Channel catfish - dark bronze like color and forked tail - 100% Channel cat. They can get huge and they fight really hard! 👊 🎣

It looks like a hybrid of blue and channel cat to me. Bc in Wisconsin the channel cats are much darker

Just as others have mentioned, it does need a dab of oil before you use it ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxSlytCJqozTF7EbdP4LWP-HUXf9WRDJ0e - put a few drops in through the convenient screw cap and you are good to go! I have fished several weeks with a couple of these, and I will be getting more in the future. I put these against my Abu Garcia Pro Max reel, and they actually perform a bit better than the Abu with some of my lighter cranks, and definitely just as good with the rest of my lures. My Abu is a bit more low profile and fits my hand better, but these are definitely not bad at all. You can almost get 3 of these for the price of my Pro Max. My only complaint is the thumb bar sits pretty high compared to my traditional profile Abu. Bring that thumb bar down a little and I’m sold on these all day long.

Oof, I fell myself wading a creek on Saturday fishing. Watched as the oil flowed out of my spinning rod. :) Got a huge bruise on my thigh from smacking a rock.
The Shenandoah is one of the best smallmouth fisheries in the DMV. I grew up fishing the north fork in front Royal. Ned rig poppers and tubes work great. Helger might crawl fish and mad Tom’s work amazing as well

There's special boots made for walking on slippery rocks with soles made out of felt (compressed wool fibers). They cost a pretty penny, but they can really help prevent your from taking a nasty spill while wading or shore fishing.

Ya it's a channel cat. It has a forked tail and I have seen them different colors according to the water. But I noticed one think they have spots on their side where other cat fish don't. Awesome catches
A Ned rig or a bitsy bug jig would have been great in those rock pools. I catch good smallies off 1/8 oz green pumpkin bitsy bug jigs with a craw trailer

Not being a strong swimmer, I have to ask....Getting out there is really cool, but would a PFD help when you go out from the bank, not knowing what the bottom is like or the depth?🤔
Your best bet is to practice your swimming. Pfd will keep you from drowning especially if the current isnt too fast. I would definitely use extra caution when approaching drop offs where you cant just walk out. I grew up 5 minutes down stream from this video and my sophmore year a custodian at my highschool drowned in this river hes fishing here. He was could not swim very well and was not wearing a pfd. Rivers are no joke especially when you cant swim.

If you are looking for crayfish look under rocks that are on top of other medium size ones with preferably ones with space between the rocks under the one you are lifting up idk how you would tell but if you lift up the same rock every it could be useful

Gooooood eaten right there!!! Channel Cat is quite good !! They are definitely a predatory fish!! I have caught several channels on a spinnerbait fishing for smallies!! They are way better eating than a smallmouth!!! Walleye and Crappie are the best imo !!!

Mike get a Life Straw or other drinking water filter to keep in your pack. You can then just drink from the river or a tiny clear stream that might be colder. You can then refill your bottle and keep grinding.
