back in high school I use to just see this movie just thinking it was nonsense (and loving it), almost 22 now and this movie is so real, a great film with a great message about youth and coming of age, with amazing dialogue and unforgettable characters
Everyone also talks about 1994 because lf Forrest Gump, Shawshank Redemption, and the best, Pulp Fiction. But Clerks tops them all for the reasons you mentioned

Randal is awesome. I'd say he's definitely the real hero of the movie. So aware of his and Dante's situation, yet still content with it because it's all he wants right now. Deals with rude and stupid people effectively and hilariously, and surprisingly a lot more respectful than Dante when it comes to women, making it a point to tell Dante how messed up his relationship ethic was. And still he obviously cares about Dante, exemplified by his warning to his ex not to hurt Dante again. If Dante learned anything by the end of the movie, it's because pretty much the whole movie was Randal giving him a reality check. Dante may not have realized it, but Randal is the best friend he could ask for.

I Struggled ot understand this movie when I saw it as a kid, I understood the jokes when I watched it as a teenager. Now as an adult, who spent 7 years working shitty retail jobs - this scene is incredible. This speech could be applied to so many people and its so real it hurts :( "Anybody could waltz in here and do our jobs" - must have had that thought tens of thousands of times
Awesome scene and monologue. On the surface, it would seem that Randall is a loser, but honestly, he has it made in a way very few people have it. He is perfectly content with his job and situation in life. He doesn’t strive or pretend to he something he’s not, he’s perfectly satisfied working as a clerk at a gas station. Most people in his country would secretly kill to be as happy as he is. What a great character and movie.

As a nerd who thinks of tabletop RPGs, I often kind of wonder what a "True Neutral" character is like. My guess is, if I had to guess, it's someone like Randall. He clearly doesn't give two flips about the customers, but then again his customers don't give two flips about him either. He hates his job to the point of utter apathy, and yet he has no motivation to aim for anything better or even quit to find something better at the same level. He's a thoughtless a-hole to everyone, yet, as this scene demonstrates, at the end of the day he knows deep down inside he's no better than the people he pisses on all day. Basically he just does whatever gets him through whatever moment he's in.

Kevin Smith is incredible. The dialogue here is so full of energy and life that it bounces of the screen. This scene particular is one of his greatest scenes ever because it's so true. People think they are entitled to bash others for not having a job even though the job they have is shit and barely pays well. I've been around people who are exactly like that, trust me. Kevin Smith is the Writer and Director Judd Apatow and Todd Phillips can only wish of being.

I would largely agree but Randall proves time and time again, with the exception of Clerks III that Randall cares deeply about Dante.

I really enjoy the writing in this film. And then being able to translate the feeling, the atmosphere into film by this cast is pretty well done.

@@HEYitzED I know this comment was posted a couple of years before clerks 3 came out but talking fast without having to stop and think is what Dante did in the movie clerks 3.
