I was lucky enough to witness their last flyby above Paris, a magnificent sight, four F-1s with special tail markings. The F-1 has a dedicated place in my heart.
We have to admit that the french air force really managed to show tribute to this magnificient aircraft. That inlcude the video with the special painted F1's reprsenting the various roles it took during it's long life in the french air force.
Great video and congratulations on your new baby! We tend to shrug when the Mirage family are brought up now because they were overshadowed by the sexier 4th Gen aircraft, but the long export orders, combat history and the modern capabilities show just how great the Dassault Darts of Death :) are. Interesting that Draken have purchased a whole lot of ex-Spanish F1's for use in DAC training against U.S and allied aircraft, again testimony to the flyability and ruggedness of this little plane that could!
Greece lost a mirage F1 by a Turkish F16 too, but other than that, they had a remarkable career with the Hellenic AF. Especially with the exocet missles they were a big threat to TR navy from 1975 to the 1990's
The Greek Mirage F1 crashed the sea because of its pilot's wrong manoeuvres. Similarly, the Turkish Air Force lost some of its F-4Es and F-16s during the dog fights.
@@Cyan_Nightingalenot what I heard… in competition with the F16 for equipping the Belgian Air Force and other countries in Europe they were equal each had its strong points…. The F16 won out when the US had a better offset… US would buy Belgium machine guns for American tanks.. So you may have a good or great aircraft but no offset or poor offset .. you lose the bid.. NO I am not saying the F16 isn’t good it’s very good.. just clarifying a point
Mirage F1 is the most balanced 2nd generation fighter, I think it has great maneuverability, good radar and middle range AAM. It even can be a threat for many 3nd generation fighters. It also has simple clean and streamlining outline, I really love the Mirage F1C with 2 magic and 2 super530, I think its simple interceptor mode is the most useful and good looking one for many countries in 80s and early 90s.
One thing to add. The Iranian Mirages are having anti ship missile and anti ship avionics added to it. One request is do something on the Iranian F14s in the Iran-Iraq war and how they are upgraded in todays time and ago. Dope video guys and good job!
Excellent video! Once again I salute you for making videos on French weapon systems in English! I have always been fascinated by French systems because they are a 3rd way apart from US systems and Soviet/Russian systems for countries which wished to remain outside the US/Soviet cold war. The F1 was as good or better than contemporary US/Soviet fighters and only failed when confronted by massive 4th generation air supremacy in the Gulf War. Against Iranian F4s and even F-14s Iraqi Mirage F-1 were able to hold their own.
After a dogfight with a Mig 21 and it's tail receiving heavy damage, landed the Mirage in SWA(Nabibia) My father-in-law saw it first hand, and won the dogfight against the Mig 21.
Wonderful video on the Mirage F1, Congratulations on your second child. And just a correction 13:01 it is Surface to air missiles, can see it was a slip of tongue
The original designation of the Mirage F1 was Mirage III F1, because it succeeded the Mirage III E. Likewise, Mirage G was short for Mirage III G - a swing-wing/variable geometry aircraft "based on" the delta wing fighter.
the pointiest of all pointy nozes the US airforce has recently bought 63 mirage F1 retired from service to be upgraded and to be used as part of their agressors squadrons during red-flag's war games thanks 4 sharing : )
despite the low altitude performance and the recuded takeoff and landing run required, the Mirage F1 never really overshadowed the Mirage III/V... Moreon since new features of the Mirage F1 like Cyrano IV Radar (that was an improvement over Mirage III Cyrano II radar) improved ATAR 9K50 engine (that was an improvement over ATAR 9C of the Mirage III) and other stuff (like refueling probe and improved avionics) could be (and actually were) retrofitted to Mirage III fuselaje or even be purchased out of factory with these features (Mirage 50). All in all, Mirage F1 was a 3rd gen fighter and suffered its predecessor Mirage III (like Mig23 suffered Mig-21) since 3rd gen was a strange jet generation that only lasted for 20 years (1960 to 1980) and had to struggle with the 2nd gen designs being able to receive the 3rd gen improvements, and was way way behind 4th gen fighters in every aspect
One thing the Mirage III could never do is have the range of the F1. Makes a big difference if you do not have tankers and AWACS to protect your tankers.
Too nice video about mirage F-1 which clearly explained its characteristics shared by excellent weapons detective 🕵️♂️ channel 👌...I think Israel 🇮🇱 airforce used it with superior capability in 1967
Fun fact: Dassault is the only company in the world to have produced both a vtol plane and a plane where the wings could move from a swept configuration to a delta wing configuration
Very interesting video 👍👌 Why don't the French make Mirage F1 with twin smal engines modernised for today's times, inspired by F-5EM / F-5FM Tiger II (same size as Tiger II). This new French Light Combat Fighter (avg unit price USD 30 million) would be Export Blockbuster for French for a lot countries who can't afford Rafael fighter. If they go one step further and offer Mirage F1N i.e. F1 converted to take-off & land on Mistral Class Light Aircraft Carriers (Mistral-LAC: 239m long, bigger avation hanger [12-Fighters+12-Medium.Helicopter], CATOBAR System [Oil burning Steam Boilers], rest same as current Mistral ships), lots of Navies of smaller and mid size countries would buy this combo. Hope the French do something about it.
Always liked the Mirage Series but the F1 is often left off the list. I think it looks very cool but I just don't know enough about it even though there is plenty of info out there Oh wow the Swing wing Mirage looks really amazing and beefy
@@khaldrago911 so your dad was probably a F15/16/14/18 pilot then. Yeah by that time. The Mirage F1 was pretty outmatched so that makes sense. What's interesting is that the Mirage F1 did shoot down a few F14s during the Iran Iraq war during the 80s. But heavy context is required for those stories.
The MiG-23 wasn't a good fighter in a dogfighting sense but it had wicked speed and acceleration, which made it dangerous; particularly since the MiG-23 had BVR missiles while the South African Mirages didn't, as far as I know.

AFAIK Greek Mirage F1 didn't use Exocet. It came with Mirage 2000 EGM.
The Greek Mirage F1 crashed the sea because of its pilot's wrong manoeuvres. Similarly, the Turkish Air Force lost some of its F-4Es and F-16s during the dog fights.
Mirage F1 is no match for the more technologically advanced & agile F16.. but it is indeed a true adversary of MiG-23 Flogger.

Ba132 Colmar ..
The most beautiful fighter jet ever created!!
That was the the Su-30 !

This was an amazing fighter in the deserts of Namibia. South African Air Force swept Cuban MiGs out of the sky.
Mirage F1s are the most powerful family in the dinasty. Sweptback wings, heavier payloads, good ability to take-off from gravel runway.

wonder Dassault never pursued a newer variant of the MIRAGE F1 multi role fighter for the 21st century air force . . .
The iraqi version (Mirage F1-EQ I believe, I may be wrong) was a pretty capable multi-role fighter nearing 4th gen capability.
It could not compete against the F16 in the market, plus Dassault wanted to sell M2000.
Well. The Rafale fills that role already. No need for a Mirage F2.
France doesn't have the capacity to spend so much on so many different fighters.
