- A full playthrough on Normal difficulty.

It turned out to be a lot easier than the other games in the series. My greatest enemy by far was myself, with my bad habit of wanting to admire explosions up close. But the main reason why it's easier is the lack of spiders, which are by far the most dangerous enemies in the series. .
But a normal playthrough really isn't indicative of the full gameplay experience, as the game is designed for multiple playthroughs and maximum replayability with it's permanent health increase power-ups and random weapon drops. The real fun starts when you get to hardest difficulty, offering a much greater challenge and powerful new guns to play with.
Note, these are the actual frame rates the game runs at. While they are bad, the game is still somehow playable in spite of it. The flamethrower at 1:47:38 is absolutely ridiculous though.

Even after all this time with the sequels and spin-offs, this is still so much fun to play. Absolutely horrific slowdown, jankiness and low budget vibe still can't hold back the insanely fun EDF gameplay!
It is actually so satisfying to get a massive slowdown whilst hearing a massive alien screaming noise, that's when you know you did a good shot

Before my ps2 broken, i have played this until inferno difficulty, i got 10k dmg sniper, 800 dmg assault riffle.... But i forgot the name...
Thank you for uploading this. I recently got into this series with 2, 2017 and 4.1, and I wanted to see how the series began. I'm actually quite shocked at how little the series has changed in 13 years. Most of the things I like about the series are right here in the first game, even including the same enemy types, weapons, missions, battle arenas and gameplay mechanics. If I knew about this series back in 2003, I think I would be frustrated by how little the series has progressed, similar to how every Worms and Bomberman game over the past two decades feels like I'm playing the same game every single time.

so, this is like the prototype of looter shooter genre?
its like - monster attack -> hellgate london -> borderlands & other arpg looter shooter around 2010.
this one's kinda lacking in the rpg department. but that's ok, since this one is like the ancient predecessor of the genre.
also silly in its own way. a one man army trooper destroys an armada of ufos raining meteor lasers from the sky, just by using rocket launchers, flamethrowers, and generic war vehicles. xcom would have recruited this man in an instant, and make him able to fly, turn into mech, and do psychic powers.
The game was so cool with 2 players, because you could chose your weapons and makes combos for constant firering, or flying on the copter with your friend
I started with 2017, but this is awesome!
Flamethrower on ants doesn't seem to cause as much FPS drops compared to flaming the UFOs. Hmmm.... Think it's due to the reflective texture mapping on UFOs and/or physics issue. The UFOs might be trying to reflect all those flame effects and cause slowdowns. Or iirc, the UFO's physics when being hit is quite exaggerated, flipping over and jerking when hit by bullets. The physics engine possibly might be spazzing out thinking all those flame sprite effects should trigger that physic animation.

Hardest stage when the enemy only 3 godzilla on chaos level, it very bored

***** Nope. Played on an actual PS2. The game really does have that much slowdown. Same goes for all the games in the series. It's the kind of games that manage to be awesome despite their obvious technical failing.
Mutant1988 I got it yesterday but dind't played it yet. Looks like fun, but the slowdowns suck.

You should try to find the second game - Global Defence Force. It's a MUCH better game. Lots more enemies, lots more stages, lots more guns and a second player class.
Still has slowdown though. You can find a re-release of that game for the Playstation Vita too (EDF v2, IIRC), but I don't think it has a physical release outside of Japan. Not sure it's even out actually. I'll need to look into that, because that's definitely a game I'm going to import.
edf 2 for PSV has its physical release in USA. The instalment which didnt get its physical release was edf 2017 on vita.
