THIS IS TAKING ME OUT 💀 so he actually said "tsinelas" which is filipino(tagalog) for slippers (it's typical in filipino culture to wear everyday slippers inside the house bc we take our shoes off at the door) here's why it sounds like "Janelle ass" STAY WITH ME the 'ts' can normally be pronounced as 'ch' when speaking casually so it sounds like "chinelas" now 'ch' and 'j' sound similar bc both use the same mouth position to produce their sound. the only difference is 'ch' is unvoiced which means only air passes through the mouth, while 'j' is voiced which means your vocal folds are moving. you can even feel the vibrations when you touch your neck. the voiceless is only air so you there is no vibration. i suppose when said really fast 'ch' and 'j' can be mixed up and sound similar bc of mouth position. chinelas = janelle ass 😂 what he means by this is he started to change something he's done in his daily life in order to feel more worthy of being looked up to which i think is silly cuz house slippers is a game changer lol but times were different back then and being one of the first fil-ams to land a leading role he probably felt the need to assimilate to american culture in order to be accepted. hope this helps! - filipino speech therapist in the making
