  • numerous aspects of marriage have been commodified over the years, from the actual wedding to the engagement ring. what used to be a simple sign of your affection, has turned into a way of proving "your love" to others. in today's video we decided to take a look at engagement rings. how they became a tradition, when diamonds became the standard, and why we feel pressured to spend so much money on something that doesn't really matter.

Diamonds themselves are also a scam. They’re not a rarity. In fact, they are a LOT more common than you’d think. The reason they’re so expensive is because one company owns over 90% of all naturally occurring diamonds so it’s equivalent to “you can’t get this nowhere else honey so send me your life savings if you really want it”

I love diamonds, but when it came to my engagement ring, we went antique. My engagement ring has two rose cut diamonds ‐ a cut that's very out of favour because it doesn't show off fire and are very thin. But I love rose cuts - they glitter rather than blindingly sparkle. We paid $400 for my ring, and I love it.
I would only caution anyone looking for alternatives to diamonds: if you mean to wear your ring every day, make sure you choose a stone that's hard enough for daily wear. Diamonds and their lab-grown equivalents, moissanite, ruby, sapphire, etc. These stones can all survive daily wear through the years. Lots of stones can wear away, fog up, or even break (emeralds can be particularly prone to breaking, even though they are quite hard). Or just refresh your ring every few years! Have fun! There are no real rules!

The best part is that I didn’t even have to get it resized, which makes it feel all the more special. Even if she can’t be at my wedding, her ring will be with me for the rest of my life and marriage.

One thing I will say about my partner--he was certain we had a future from early in our relationship, and he asked me what sort of stone I'd want in a ring if/when he gave me one. So I told him, "No diamonds." Quite aside from the concerns cited here, there's something about colorless diamonds that always struck me as somewhat lacking in soul and expressiveness (unless you're expressing how much money you spent).

    • @beckahcruz7463

Yes, I agree! I've been putting off my engagement for many reasons, including my health, but a big reason is also the rings. I'm not sure what I want. I do know I don't want a diamond. I think they are ugly and extremely boring! I could do a colored diamond but those are also expensive. We definitely don't have the money for that. If I spend thousands of dollars it will be on something more important than a ring.

@@beckahcruz7463 Colorless diamonds are ugly, aren't they? I myself don't need to give up a kidney, as lovely as some fancy diamonds are. @withelisa 2 місяці тому +11

Just one note- black diamonds are gorgeous but they do get their color from inclusions, so they're brittle and prone to cracking compared with other gemstones. I'm a fiddler. The only jewelry I wear is earrings, because anything else, I'll play with it, fiddle with it and inevitably lose it. I'd constantly worry about losing something as expensive as a diamond engagement ring. I'd like a pretty, cheap ring that can easily be replaced.

A friend of mine got engaged with a ring made of wood her husband himself crafted (he took the wood from a tree from the selvatic zone where they met) and I thought it was so romantic and very meaningful, I couldn’t have an expensive diamond ring without seeing the blood through it

personally emerald (birth stone) or a healing stone (amethyst, selenite, quartz) for engagement. then a diamond, gold, or silver band for the wedding. I know what I want.

When my now-husband and I started discussing marriage, I specifically told him I did not want a diamond ring for many reasons, including that I just think they’re a bit boring. He got me the most beautiful moonstone ring (at my request) which I treasure and always gets compliments! But when he gave it to me, he made me promise that if anyone ever asked about my ring, I had to tell them it was what I asked for so no one would accuse him of being stingy. I agreed and we’re going to be celebrating 13 years of marriage this year ❤

My birthstone is a diamond and it's so disappointing because it's the most boring basic gem imo. Instead I got a custom pink sapphire because it's my favorite color. He even had me pick out the ring and we designed it together. I'm very happy with it 💗

Wow the history of the rings in ancient times and what they looked like back then interest me. Though the rings being once made out of bone freaked me out a little 😅. And yeah, I’d rather not go for a diamond ring either, even if I’m wealthy since 1. Really expensive, and 2. I prefer more colorful stones, so I might go for an Alexandrite, Mojssanite, and/ or Opal if I get engaged. Plus hearing about the awful treatment of workers in the diamond mines made me not want a mine diamond even more. Coincidentally, Opal is also my birth stone.

I'm in my 80s. Been widowed a few times along life's way. I have never had a store bought, brand new diamond ring. Mine came from pawn shops. All pre-owned. All beautiful. And when I wore them I often times marveled at their past history. In today's world, I can see why couples are choosing other options.

Love the video. Personally, I find diamonds a little bit boring and definitely overrated. I always prefer other gemstones and there are so many different ones. It would be a lot more interesting to see who wears which gemstone to see each individual's preference, taste and character.

I'm from Germany and I don't think you really saw diamonds, let alone large ones, being put on engagement rings before the internet made it trendy, most people I know either used one set of rings for both engagement and wedding or used plain silver (or another metal of that color at least) for their engagement rings and then "upgraded" to plain gold (occasionally engraved with names and wedding date on the inside) for the actual wedding rings. Also, both partners tend to wear them, not just the woman.

Yes, they are a scam. And they are pretty much worthless to resell. I told my husband not to go into debt on a ring before he proposed. Then my grandmother ended giving me her diamond from my late grandfather. We have struggled financially our whole marriage and have tried to sell it twice (not at a pawn shop). We were offered so little for it that it would have been an insult to take it. So I still have it and it worth far more now as a gift from my grandmother than anything else.

Nowadays, I just don't really see the point in engagement rings... You'll have a wedding ring anyway, shouldn't that be enough? Also, diamond rings are really expensive and (in my opinion) aren't even that pretty. Personally, I told my boyfriend (now fiancé) I didn't need an engagement ring and I am still happy with this decision 😊

I think the diversity of today's relationships means that there isn't really a one true way to view relationships, engagement and marriage. Your situation sounds very nice and I'm sure it is the right choice for you. I also know couples who don't want to get married, so they just got engagement rings and live together and started their own families. That works for them. The diversity of situations is beautiful and sticking to a traditional "man proposes with a diamond ring, couple saves money and maybe gets help from both sets of parents and then gets married and both get wedding bands" only needlessly restricts couples. And yeah, diamonds are expensive because the sellers manipulate the market. I agree that is isn't really worth it, but some people like diamonds and they can do as they please.

I got engaged with a 600$ garnet and gold ring I picked out. The garnet definitely shows some wear after ten years but honestly nothing is forever. The nicks and scratches are just a show of time passing. I'm still very happy with my decision. Garnets are my favorite stone and it brings me joy. You could argue that a more expensive ring would have held out better and maybe? But why? The ring is symbolic sure but it's not like it's tied to the marriage like it's The One Ring and if one is destroyed so will the other go.

Are diamond engagement rings a scam? Yes and no. Yes, they are more common than people realize and the price is SERIOUSLY overinflated. No, diamonds are the hardest naturally occurring substance in the world, which is important for something one could potentially wear for decades and be passed down for generations. My advice: if you are choosing to have a stone on your engagement ring, choose a stone that can LAST for generations.

There's no such thing as a "conflict free" diamond, no matter what the industry tells you. And lab grown diamonds still have a significant impact on the environment so however you spin it, it's just not worth it imo. And that's what I told my boyfriend. I'd rather spend two months worth of his salary on literally anything else.

The lady at the jewelry store first led me to diamond rings of course and the cheapest one was $6000. My husband eventually proposed with a white gold ring with amethyst and small diamond accents that was only $700 plus a free ruby pendant.

I'm not a fan of rings in general, I have the knack of fidgeting and taking them off in odd places, and neither is my gf, so when we got engaged we exchanged novelty pins since it felt more like us. We had a couple of years in between getting engaged and making it public and when we did so, uff, my in laws were very pushy about _the_ ring and how expensive it should be (my SIL even volunteering to buy one for us). I'm kinda bummed out how society still expects this from people. I still got myself a fake one to take to wedding related stuff.

In Uruguay, where I live, engagement rings aren’t really a thing… You just talk with your BF/GF and decide if you want to get married and start planning the event… Most ppl that get engagement rings it’s because on North American media influence, and diamonds are Not the stone of choice, cubic zirconia for clear and emerald, ruby and sapphire for colored stones.
