- Tutorial on how to make liquid drum & bass bass sounds with Massive X and Serum.
One of the most used bass sounds is the deep rolling bassline that has championed the sound of drum & bass. Many legendary liquid D&B tracks have used this bassline including Commix's 'Be True'. Generally it is a bass that is used among various genres. It is even found often in Hip-Hop and R&B such as Future feat. The Weeknd's 'Low Life'. That said I highly recommend learning this bass.

You are a very serious cat, pure DNB, very forbidden knowledge 🌻
Haha cheers mate, like the term forbidden knowlede :)
I can't explain how much I love you dude! You're so considerate and gentle, sharing so many nice tips on the side which just help your viewers through out. Sending ya a warm hug, content like yours is seldom to be found!
I have been slamming my face into my keyboard for hours now on serum trying to get a good bassline sound and you saved me! Thank you very much! And for the A Minor, never realized how nice it sounded for liquid dnb :) Subbed!
Yes A minor is the secret, and got me along early in my journey when I had no theory.
Not only do you go through it slow and thoroughly enough to follow along, you also explain the concept behind the tweaks being made. Thank you.
Very clear explanations and I like that you showed the approach in more than one synth, thanks !
Glad it was helpful!
I just absolutely love liquid drum&bass and have been struggling with how to make this type of basslines in serum. Thank you so much kind sir. :) Newly subscribed :)
Thank you for subbing, and I'm glad this has helped you achieve this bass sound! Have fun making music!
I love you videos bro! Honestly think your tutorials are some of the most helpful on UA-cam!
I’d love to see you do a tutorial/give me some tips on jump up dnb bass? Like the generic dominator style wob?
Could you send me a track example?
Man you're facilitating a huge wave of new producers.. legend honestly. Killin it bro, dont be a stranger. Keep these coming!!
Hey bro, I appreciate you making these videos, they are a great foundation to help me development.
Much love brother 😁
wicked help stranjah
Holy this helps me so much as a beginner! ❤
sounds dope with a Rhodes playing chords overtop
Nice man, would love to hear your result!
Bro.. I have been beating my head against making that warm bassline for *years*. Sometimes the simplest is the most elusive. Thank you so friggin much. Trying to go with a "Commix - Be True" sound. *bows respectfully*
Toby you got it! Be True is the one exactly
Glad we're all on the same page. Absolute legendary tune
I'm trying to use the tools I have in my DAW so getting into the principles for synthesis of the sound was exactly what I needed. I was able to create something that sounded very similar. Thank you!
Thanks clear explanation!
You have a very nice super patient way of explaining things and u don t make them overly complicated so it s less overwhelming .Thanks a lot!
Your welcome Gaianu. That is very kind of you to say that!
love this one
I found using the circle waveform the best. You mention having a more rounder sound with the filter etc, but nothing gets you a rounder sound, than the circle waveform!
Interesting. For liquid basslines the norm is to use the other ones so you get the additional harmonics that create that rumbley sound. But yes, I have a found using the sound for this bass gets your a very round wide sounding bass!
This great, I love how you explain. I know this is old an old one. Thank you for your hard work!
Always glad For these. Would love to see more liquid dnb content from you 💙
I'll work on it
I cannot tell you how much I appreciated this tutorial. You took your time and made things so simple, I was even able to get something going with Vital, which I'm a complete novice with. Thank you so much for the time and care you put into these videos.
great tutorials, you've found a niche with the liquid/minimal dnb genre keep it up! Would love a tutorial on getting some of the minimal subtle top end crunchy/growly sounds to sit well on top of the rolling bass. The type you see Halogenix/Villem/Lenzman do in some of their tracks.. seems there is so little out there on it.
Thanks Joe. I made this video thinking of your request let me know if it helped. ua-cam.com/video/roBiYe9e5j8/v-deo.html
@@STRANJAH yes already clocked it and it was great! Right on the money so nice one! Keep the minimal/techy tutorials coming 😁
I have been trying to achieve this bass sound for ages! This was super helpful
sup G i appreciate your work man !
Really nice, simple but very effective bass sound 👍 Massive X is a beast to handle. I will copy your setting 🙏
Thanks for this still brother. Vital, at this point in time is my weapon of choice still :D
Yeah man! Awesome stuff! Keep it up!
Thank you!
Newly subscribed. I love your videos! Especially appreciate that you provide insights into how best to modify the patches. So many great basslines to work with now. Agree with other commentators, would appreciate seeing your approach to jungle pads and lead sounds, as well as the music theory videos you've hinted at. Keep up the great work :)
Thanks Varun for your kind words. I will look into doing pads next video, I will gear it more for liquid D&B to complete the liquid series however you should be able to replicate it for jungle. Keep in touch a lot of topics to cover but I hope to get to some theory soon! All the best!
@@STRANJAH That's great! Looking forward to more videos. Btw, your studio looks really cool. Would love to get a peak into your setup/gear. :)
@@vnayini haha thanks man, there isn't really much here as I work in the box nowadays. I'll think about it, maybe will post some photos or do a short video tour!
Dude, so glad I found your channel! Subscribed.
Your channel is a godsent, thank you so much for everything
Great walk through, straight-forward. I used the same technique to make a bass synth in Reason by layering four Monotones and it got beefy real quick.
Great to know the technique works across platforms and synths! What style of D&B you do?
STRANJAH in terms of making music, in over ten years of dabbling in trying to make tunes I never really settled on a style until very recently. I’m mostly into deep and dark liquid right now, stuff like Kasper, GLXY, Soligen, Silence Groove, Paul T and Ed Oberon, and so on.
Awesome vid. Would love to hear you go more in depth on learning music theory.
Will do, I have a working knowledge of theory - but I can show you my tips on how I use it.
Dope tutorial man, this definitely helped me start off my track. I actually used Vital as I don't have massive or serum. I actually used this bass for a future garage track I'm making.
I realize Im quite randomly asking but does anyone know a good site to watch new movies online?
@Theodore Darian Flixportal xD
@Roger Wilder Thank you, I went there and it seems like they got a lot of movies there :D I appreciate it !!
@Theodore Darian no problem xD
real helpfull tutorials mate thanks a lot , me personally would love some tips about layering your track as in : how many bass layers , how do i save freq's and how do i get a full clean mix throughout because i am having trouble finding the right method as every artists has it's own it appears to me , i usually go with 3 bass layers sub to 80 hz and mid 80-300hz and 300-up top layer but i really could use more help here . as i am stuck in finding a nice balance ..
Thanks Jarrik that is a good question, I'll look into some bass layering in future videos. To answer your question directly I keep it simple with 2 layers at most, however, there is certainly nothing wrong with 3 layers, as long as you are able to keep it all sounding cohesive as one.
incredible tutorial yet again! please make a video about basslines similar to skeptical or alix perez?
Sure, could provide an actual track example? As they use a variety of bass sounds.
Looks like the last melody shown is in E minor: it has only one black key - F that wasn't used in a progression, so visually it was similar to A minor. The progression shown is more resolving in E minor: I - III - IV - VII - VI.
Thanks!
When you use a Bass like this do you still Layer a Sub Bass underneath it or do you just use this one as the "Sub Bass"?
Great Vid 😊
Good question
Please do camo & krooked style Basses and in serum too or fm8! Also some alix Perez (shades) basses. That phat one he uses a lot
great request I haven't thought of Camo & Krooked for a while, will do
More jungle pads please
Sure!
Can you do a tutorial using free versions of these plug ins, like Vital in replace of Serum, etc?
I just want to know how to do this with base abelton...
Which bass synth would you use on bandlab?
Thanks!! Should sell your presets mate:)
working on a preset pack actually!
Hey man, I love these subs, but I find with the high unison, when I put the bass in mono, I get all sorts of phasing problems and the volume oscillates. How to I fix this? Cheers man, keep doing what you're doing bro x
how do you get the bass notes on keyboard? the deepest note i can find on my keyboard
sounds way higher than yours
Hit the Octave Down button or Octave -
tasty
As i can't spell either I'm gunna changemy name from strain jah to juan car lol.
How anyone could downvote this is pitiful! Anyway, to the point, shouldn’t you set Serum’s random to zero, to ensure sonic consistency, similar to what you did in Massive X?
