I’m sorry. But “I had a heart attack and overextended” means NOTHING to me. “Ohhh I’m sorry. Mail me my friggin comics”. People are so worried about being understanding that they’re getting taken advantage of. Ridiculous. I hope Hero Restoration gets sued into third world poverty.
Thank you for discussing Hero Restoration. I’m going through this trying to get my books back now. They have only had my books since last September, so not as bad as others. I live in New Jersey and initially chose to do business with them because they were in my state (which they have since left) and I just didn’t know anything about cleaning and pressing. I drove my books there and dropped them off in person and when I left I called my friend and said I would be buying my own press. I really think that the “influencer” who promoted this scam of company should come forward and say something. Hero Restoration still says they are taking submissions on their website.
hero restoration has filed for bankruptcy and is not returning any of my money nor my valuable book. This a nightmare for many people who put their trust with this guy.
So the showcase 9.6 came about as being part of a pedigree collection. An art instructor at a college amassed a HUGE amount of late golden age - mid silver age comics to use as instructing material. These books had small notations written in pencil on the margins.
Can’t believe that the owner of Hero Restoration hasn’t sent any books back- it’s the least he can do since he’s been pre-paid for the restoration services. Thinking a little negatively here…but ignoring offers from people to pay the shipping for him has me wondering if he still has the books in his possession. 🤔
It’s a terrible situation and the more I read from folks waiting on their books I’m amazed I got mine back. They were returned last week after ten months. Happy to finally have them back and wish the best for everyone else waiting on theirs and/or their money. The books were not cleaned and the pressing job on four of the nine I gave them wasn’t very good. I had to repress them myself.
Thanks for the advice guys. I guess I should've clarified a little more in my email. I wasn't referring to spine tics when I said "spine creasing". I meant that almost every book in the multi-book shipment that was facing another book has a vertical line or indentation running down the spine side of the books. I guess it could also be called spine "roll" as well. I vet the books as best I can by examining pictures available before I buy so I don't believe that many of them had the spine roll/creasing when I bought them. And it is almost always the books that are shipped facing towards each other that have them. It looks like an impression of the other book that has been pressed into the spine side of the book. It's much like when you have comics that have been sitting in a box for years where the books have shifted slightly over time and the books behind or in front of may get a little rolled from pressing up against a misaligned spine of an adjacent book. Perhaps it is movement of the books during shipment but many packages I get are packed really well and securely so the books won't shift around. If it was only a few books occasionally I would just chalk it up to the books having been that way when they shipped but it's been happening nearly every time I get two or more issues shipped together. It mostly only happens with the old newsprint Marvel and DC books as well as thinner indie comics from years gone by. Who knows. Just another quirk of this collecting hobby.
I sent my Daredevil #1 to Hero Restoration for tape removal, cleaning, and press. After 8 months with no movement, I did contact them to request my comic back and my money refunded. He explained his situation to me via email, and he did return my book but said the refund would have to wait due to his situation. My money is probably gone but at least I got my Daredevil #1 back.
I’m glad you received your Daredevil 1 back. He returned my FF 5 back to me after numerous emails and a phone conversation. He did steal my 2k that I paid upfront for a full restoration. The book was a CGC 5.5 purple label with trimming. I received it back in the same holder after a year. He never worked on it. He needs to return our money but it seems unlikely.
I'm still waiting on this guy and the crazy part was the "COMIC COMMUNITY" recommended him now now of them aren't saying nothing!!!! 20 books he kept!!! And I'm suppose worry about his health!!! Stop recommending people if you haven't dealt with them personally!!!!
I sent some books to Hero Restoration for pressing and I was HIGHLY suspicious that 3, definitely ONE of the books I got back were not the same ones I sent. Since they were my own one owner personal books for 40 years. However when I wrote him he responded immediately and I was satisfied as a learning experience. I do press my own books but these were my more expensive ones and I wanted them right. Nevertheless, press and cleaning takes way more time than the small amount that they charge. I saw this coming with most press and cleaners. It’s a lot of work and they charge to little. I can’t imagine how long or hard it is to restore books.
I sent a Superboy 98 (1st app of Ultra Boy) to Hero restoration last year. It had a really bad spine roll and other issues. Only paid $30 for the book. HR sent me the wrong invoice. I e-mailed the customer service rep and got it worked out. They sent it to CGC for me. Got a 4.0 which was better than I expected. Book looked great. I have a pic of it on my IG account. Glad I got my book back before they imploded.
Hey, this is Bob in Connecticut and I was contemplating giving my Superman 1 5.0 moderate professional restoration, no trimming color, touch, pieces, added tear seals . I was talking on the phone to a couple of people that work for CGC and they said I had excellent chance for restoration removal.. well the way it is right now I paid $12,500 for this book about 20 years ago. Yes I know it’s only worth $60-$70,000 the way it is.. but I have heard total nightmares on restoration removal. I saw the negativity on UA-cam. It doesn’t sound promising so I’m not going to go through the bullshit.. I also have an amazing fantasy 15 8.0 no trimming restored believe it or not I bought this raw years ago from the comic book weekly newspaper comics buyers guide for only $450. Of course the way it is right now it’s still $20,000 plus.. when I decide to sell these, I’m not going to deal with any bullshit of restoration removal
Thanks! John & Richard. Another great show. ( As always!!!) I'm curious about your thoughts on using blue LED lights and hydrogen peroxide for whitening comics. I recently purchased a light and would like all the information I can find before trying this technique. Also any tips on pressing square bound books, like Richard's Silver Surfer #1. I've been pressing my own books for approximately 3 years. Call me chicken as I still haven't tried pressing books with a square spine. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Lots of love and respect for you two and your show, so your opinion is highly respected. Keep up the great work and thanks for all you do for comic community. Thanks guys!!
Mike DeChellis of Hero Restoration was arrested a few days ago for the theft of over $300k in books. He is alleged to have been selling stolen books on multiple eBay accounts and privately to dealers.
According to a new post in the CGC Forums, DeChellis took on new work to restore an expensive book in August 2023. That would be after he was outed two months prior for defrauding people. That individual is in the same boat with his book and money stolen.
John, there is also Navy Action and Police Action. (ALSO a Police Action from the 1975 Atlas, but neither here nor there.) However, you may notice that with Police Action, the “action0 part of the logo is missing the “swoosh” lines, so I guess it’s just stationary action. Another Ka-Zar connection with Jack and JR is Daredevil 12. Jack did layouts on the issue at Stan’s behest, for Romita’s start on DD, his first 60s Marvel assignment. Wow! Why I Hate Saturn!! Seeing that book takes me back to the summer of 1993. My second printing has a different cover…but I DO still own it!
Hey fellas, love the show! Question for you, have you had restoration removed on any of your books? And if so, do you have someone you might recommend? I’ve recently purchased a Batman 2 with slight color touch to spine and slight tear seals. I’ve considered using CGC’s removal service, but fear they may not give the care to the book that I am seeking. BTW, it’s horrible to hear that situation with Hero Restoration. I think their services were continually pumped by other UA-camrs (I.e. rhymes with comicRom), and their internal issues probably grew without proper mitigation. I had almost contracted them to work on my Brave and the Bold 28, until I heard from other collectors of poor work they had received from them, so now I feel like I’ve dodged a bullet. Regardless, I feel for the collectors with books in their possession, and hope they receive their books back safely. Vetting in this hobby is extremely important.
Great show as always fellas! I’m curious about that “Why I Hate Saturn” book…the name of Kyle Baker is stylized in the font that Disney uses for its own name/logo. Any insight on that similarity at all? Thanks!
The marvel television shows that were on ABC were 100% tied into the Marvel cinematic universe. In fact, when the Inhumans first premiered, it was in the theaters for a one week stent, and then it showed up on ABC. Many people forget that the first time we saw lockjaw Was in the theaters along with the rest of the royal family. Perhaps if the MCU truly wants to get its groove back, they should reverse and premiere on ABC, a Disney owned television channel, and then have it conclude in the movie theaters. Just think how many people that otherwise may not watch something because they’re not paying for Disney+ with all the sudden be immersed in something they may not otherwise see. Just something for thought..
Ah BBS, long gone but not forgotten by some of us. Thanks for highlighting Kamandi-Zar err, sorry, Ka-Zar, a character I am very fond of and whose 1970s series by Doug Moench and Val Mayerik is one I have re-read several times. That's a great cameo portrait of Zabu on the cover of X-Men #10. C-Lister John? I'm outraged! He is definitely a B-Lister. Ka-Zar, Zabu and I thank you Richard for your support. John and Richard, if you and your families ever come to Sydney I would love to show you around our marvellous city: walking across the Harbour Bridge, a tour of the Opera House, a trip to the Blue Mtns. (my home), the works guys. By the way, Oz Comic-Con is in Sydney on 23-24 September and the beers (many much better than that Fosters bilge-water) are on me.
Oh my, I stopped the stream to go read the CGC thread and...I'm going to go kiss my books goodnight and safely tuck them into their comfy, cozy, safe short boxes. No field trips for them.
I just found out about this stuff going on. No idea how I never heard about this. I had a book at hero restoration for restoration. Is there anything I can do to get it back now?
If the guy is hard up for cash, there's a simple solution to turn that frown upside down... Charge for lessons in professional restoration and conservation and teach others to do what he can do.
Midtown has sent me several books that have corner bends, it them packing them I'm for sure. When they arrived there's nothing wrong with the box it was sent in.
Thanks for the response, I'm not out what you are, but I'd still like my $700 back, but I don't see that happening. Feel fortunate to have my comic back at this point.
The audience scores have been relatively high overall. What I find odd is the wide gap between people who saw it. It’s love or hate. Not much of the middle ground..
I love Why I Hate Saturn so much. Glad you enjoy it too. Kyle’s art was at its peak but even more, his humour was in top form. Just a delightful read from start to finish. I also like Kyle’s Cowboy Wally (I think that was the name) but that story was a little less… linear (I.e. it was all over the place). Saturn is by far my favourite graphic novel of the 80’s.
RE: Flash - I'm also seeing where the numbers are low but everybody tells me it is good. I can only think that yeah, among the normies there's just a limited interest. That's why they don't show up when people are sending to CGC, those people are looking for those before shipping.
Another great show guys!! Thanks!! I saw the Flash movie and Ezra Miller is terrible in this movie. He is painful to watch and strikingly annoying. Michael Keaton was on point! He and Supergirl are the only saving graces in this movie (IMO). Batman '89 could have an excellent revival especially with us old farts if Keaton reprises the role going forward. The surprise cameos were a bit confusing especially with the future direction of DC movies? Excellent info on the Heroes Restoration ordeal! Congrats on the SS #1 score Richard!!! Thanks for always providing some great comic content week in and week out!!
