Wow, i think this was the first movie i remember watching in a cinema.
I barely remember anything from it, though, and what i do remember seem to only be nighttime scenes.

Saw it in December 1977.remember it was sold out.so I have no idea how many general cinema southgate usa held .I was extremely young at the time but also like Bedknobs 1971 pulled massive crowds into theaters.

The lighthouse in PETE’S DRAGON was built on a private coastal ranch in Los Osos, California and not on Morro Bay, though it’s not far away (frankly you can see Morro Bay in the distance, though not in the film). The area is now owned by PG&E (Pacific Gas & Electric) with limited public access, though the area where PETE’S DRAGON was filmed is now called Disney Point on the Buchon Trail near Montana De Oro State Park on California’s beautiful central coastline.
You did a fine job talking about the production of the film. I actually saw the original 134 minute version at a cast and crew screening in fall of 1977. I also saw the original 6 foot long oil painting used during the opening credits/overture sequence. The detail on that thing was amazing as the camera slowly panned across it. Again, you did a fine job detailing production on this film.
FYI: Ron Miller secretly wanted, as did everyone at Disney, for Julie Andrews to star but she really wasn’t interested in assuming the role of Nora.

I so fondly recall going to NYC for a family weekend trip right before Christmas in 1977. We saw Pete’s Dragon at Radio City Music Hall as the main attraction of the annual Christmas show. It was so much fun! Huge crowd and everyone was laughing and enjoying the film. Fantastic time!

correction: Bill of Sale wasn't the last number. A reprise of I Saw a Dragon and Brazzle Dazzle Day are heard in the final scene.

Will always have a special place in my heart for this film. Went out of the theater wishing for a dragon like Elliott. (I was five, lol.)

There are parts of the film that I love and parts that are very cringe worthy though Helen Reddy is a complete joy. I saw the unedited version on its release and really liked the musical numbers as it gave it that great musical feeling. It does feel kind of out step for its 1977 release but it would be nice to have an unedited version released with its 134 minutes put back together.

One thing I've always wondered about this movie: When Elliott is trapped underneath the canvas/tarp, is it actually the animated character underneath, or did they use some sort of animatronics?
Also, did Candy Candido provide Elliott's snorting noises in that scene? (He provided the snorts for Madame Medusa's pet crocodiles in The Rescuers, which was released that same year, and was also the Indian Chief in Peter Pan, the Crocodile Captain in Robin Hood, and Fidget the Bat in The Great Mouse Detective.)

I take my hat off to you Dave. This was one of the very first movies my mum took me too as a young boy and I have fond memories of it. I’ve not seen the original film in well over 20 years and must try and find a copy of it. Where on earth did you get all of this information from? Absolutely fascinating facts here. I had no idea Don Bluth was involved in this. Secret of Nimh was a favourite of mine growing up.
Excellent job here and cannot wait to see what comes next.
