This is a classic/historic military vehicle which is exhibited at various places including the Hollowell Steam & Heavy Horse Show.
just to clear the mysteries up,its a leyland 680 diesel in it,and explorers don't have diff locks on them, thw reason for the two back wheels going around together on the same side,is they are driven off a single half-shaft via gears to the hubs,so in effect they are locked together
Why does it sound like Leyland diesel and is also badged Leyland Diesel if it's petrol?
this is diesel not petrol....
That's not petrol. That's the unmistakable sound of a Leyland 0.600 diesel, which in itself is odd as they were mainly Gardner engines.
The originaql engine would have been a Meadows petrol.
fishsponge can't tell the difference between diesel and petrol. Definitely a Leyland 680.
Me thinks "Leyland diesel" too. Nice video though. I probably would have anchored up and winched when the wheel slip started. Our group "Dilligaf Squad" has 2 explorers with RR Eagle diesels, 1 with the original Meadows petrol and 1 being restored with a Leyland diesel.
Scammell Explorers - arguably one of the best off road recovery trucks ever made. Pretty much go anywhere to do the job required. Great fun to drive too. Love 'em!
Six years ago or not, yes, winching would have made less of a mess :o)
I always was under the impression these fully locked
I remember silcocks fair having 2 of theese with generators on
Longitudinal-locks she clearly has, but doesn't she have cross-locks?
Nevertheless, a most nice piece of history, indeed!
I know for a fact that this truck is not petrol, the owner does have a petrol Leyland Martian
That's a diesel, also tyres aren't up to it
It's aeyland 680. Diesel
yep i got a scammell brochure from 70s and on cover a six wheeled crusader full painted with a union jack !? wonder if it still exists ,wish i could find my ford transcontinental brochure, six wheeled one in that ,never saw one of them ,but i had three gulf models and a mack and crusader matchbox super king lol
That is definitely a diesel with that engine knock no way a petrol.
Towing things with the winch cable, a sure way to fuck it all up...
If you don't mind me asking, how would you recommend doing the job?
What is an artic doing in there?
So kasting
Why does this remind me of 2012 Hollowell so badly
because it was so wet in July!!
Because it was filmed at Hollowell 2012 :)
This is definatly a diesel engin (Rolls Royce), I had the petrol engine explorer with the Meadows 6PC630 (10.5ltr) petrol straight 6 engine, and it certainly did not sound like this.
Fab video and well worth watching. :-)
Its definately a leyland 680,the only reason i know this is,i happen to be the current owner of her :)
I stand corrected! ;-)
@@andywolf100 no worries,i like the sound of the meadows petrol, but not the way it goes through the jungle juice :)
I remember going up a long steep hill and watching the fuel guage moving in real time. As you say, lovely sound, but fuel cost! :-O
I have the sister truck to this explorer
His Martian is also featured on your channel
Sister truck = 1943 Aec matador
@@joescarratt9389 made by the Amature Engineering Company :),watford is the centre of the universe, not southall :)
No diff lock?? No, can't believe that...well...then use it??
hate to thing how much petrol its drinking! haha
