You’re right, Graham, I HAVE heard this advice a bazillion times, but yet I’m grateful for you & all the other talented engineers out there who have been saying this. After a ton of years studying the craft, I should know better by now. Anyway, TODAY, I cease beating myself up about my ignorance & I’m doing templates from NOW on. Thank you so much, YOU ROCK! 🙌🏽
Yes I use mix templates all the time, huge time saver. But I put your master fader plugin on another Aux bus (submix) and send that to the master fader. Usually the only thing on that Master is a meter, Console for UAD and Reference 4 for room correction. Great tutorial Graham
Having a template is great, helps me when im recording and mixing. I usually already have tracks open for instruments I usually record like Drums, Guitars, vocals, etc... And having them with reverb and delays really helps the musician and the client get into the song and give there best execution! Many clients don't have hours to spend in the studio so having all these tracks and busses all setup helps for the creative stage of the song and makes them happy.
you all probably dont care at all but does someone know a trick to get back into an instagram account?? I was dumb forgot my password. I appreciate any help you can give me.
@Elisha Vincenzo i really appreciate your reply. I got to the site thru google and Im in the hacking process atm. I see it takes a while so I will reply here later with my results.
I was updating my mix template last night. I'm getting ready to go back to having one template for recording and mixing. I have a mastering template too. These are essential to anyone who wants to build on there experience.
Thank you Graham, it was very inspiring! Inserting few vital plugins right now, but leaving them inactivated (not bypassed) is a great tip for making a template.
I use Reaper. I always use and build/tweak templates. For both mixing and especially mastering. Buses for Drums , Guitars , and Bass(s) always. I always start with EQ , Gate , Reverb , Compression , Limiting for drums. For guitars and bass , I start with EQ , and Compression (with maybe a little Chorus sometimes). On the Master Fader , I typically use EQ , Compression , and Limiting. I generally use 16 & 24 Track templates for recording and/or mixing , and 2 Track for Mastering. That has saved me a lot of time for both myself and clients.
Do you just have this template and pull in consolidated tracks from your recording sessions when ready to mix, or do you try to populate this into the recording session?
Logic user here! I have a template setup for my drum recordings. Super helpful would be an understatement! Makes mixing and editing a breeze just tweaking settings here and there based on my starting points, and keeps all my drum tracks sound consistent song to song!
I have different templates for tracking, mixing and mastering. Helps enormously. For mixing, I use a basic template, to which I add with track templates, depending on the mix job.
There is already a master fader in the mixer. Are you creating a new master fader track? What is stacking the tracks in relation to your connecting the drum tracks through AUX channels?
I use some templates: when I track rhythm guitars, I always do it AT -12dB, and on the guitar bus I already have EQ, COMPRESSOR and DELAY (sometimes REVERB) unabled, and activate them and start to tweak the settings from there. I even created some EQ PLUGINS (rhythm guitar, solo guitar, bass, synths, etc). That's for sure something that helps you SPEED THINGS UP, but sometimes I fall on the "trap" of EQing BY DEFAULT (not actually listening to the track and what it really needs) :/ Working on that rookie mistake.. haha
Thanks for sharing this info. I am just beginning to try this and I have saved a few templates of songs that sounded the best to me. What I have done is very basic, I have saved templates along with the tracks with final mix settings all round, so that I can listen to how the tracks sound. I have not used group busses for drums, but will do so now. Thanks again for the valuable tips. It will be as you say consistent and time saving. Cheers 😊😊 😊😊 😊😊 😊
Templates all day, for sure! I usually have Groups for backing vox/harms and rhythm guitars depending on the tune as well (as you noted). I’d recommend adding a video on tips and tricks for easily routing the relevant tracks that belong in a group to the corresponding Aux. Seems second nature to those who do it on the regular, but might be helpful as a Part Two? Thanks as always for the great content!
Thanks so much Graham! I couldn’t have produced my latest EP without your videos. I appreciate it. Although you only touch on desktop mixing (which is 100% ideal), it completely translates to iOS production which is where I work. I am going to start a mix template in FL Studio Mobile right now!
That's actually the starting point of every mix I work on. I've got the 'blank' project with all the tracks and busses where some plugins were already added , the faders and the sends were set up, so I just need to import the audio files to every track to start the mixing.
I use a recording template with tracks/channels pre-configured that covers the basics for just about any recording I've done: 1) Drum VSTi that's configured with a good starting preset. 2) Bass track routed from a high-Z input and using a bass VST plug-in set to a preset I like 3) Two guitar tracks routed from the same high-Z input and using a guitar VST plug-in set to two presets I like 4) Vocal track routed from a mic input and a compressor VST plug-in 5) Acoustic guitar track routed from the same mic input 6) A keyboard VSTi that I like with the MIDI routing in place from my keyboard I will add or delete tracks as needed but this is a good starting point for me. I also have a reverb send channel pre-configured with a reverb VST plug-in and because I use Cakewalk SONAR X1, I use the ProChannel settings on my tracks and my Master fader. This saves a ton of time, especially the input selection, choosing VST/VSTi and the MIDI routing.
It seems very helpful and time saving approach, so can I use this same kind of template for recording instruments, like guitar and base, or do I just record them on a separate track with no effects to later on import them into this kind of template? Thanks
I'm a big fan Graham as well as a student of many courses if yours. Question though...couldn't I just create a mix template and pull that template up and use it for my tracking session. I'd have everything deactivated and then when I'm ready to mix, activate them. Doesn't this take away the step if having to import tracks or import my mix template in to where my Trax are?
Excellent tutorial Graham. One question how can I get a good and more realistic guitar sound using virtual amps? E.g. Amplitube, Guitar Rig and so on. I'm guitar player and I wanna make a good templates from it. Thanks a lot.
Wonderful stuff! Helped me tweak my existing templates in great ways! One question: when I slap a compressor on the Master with settings in the ballpark of yours, I don’t see any Gain Reduction happening in the compressor meters. Seems to require a much lower Threshold, which gets things squishy sounding. Any thoughts? Thanks as always for the great content!!!
This would have came in so handy if it was in FL lol.. thanks though man .. always thought about it but never really clicked until I was clicking a whole bunch of EQs for every track and then you upload this video lol smh
I've always wanting to have a good template in my gear, but I never had made one up, I kind of thought I would not have enough or not the right kind of template for the mix, I have download several template from the pass, just to see how it is routed, I kind of like the Bussing style the best, and next is the Sub mix template, if that make any kind of sense,,

Still learning the basics of mixing- built my first template while watching this video. Thank you Graham!
Thanks for the tutoril Gram! I've been looking for templates and not wanting to buy them. Much Appreciated Brother!!!

This is exactly what I need right now as I'm planning a collection of music where I literally want everything to sound the same in each song
you all probably dont care at all but does someone know a trick to get back into an instagram account??

@Pablo Alfred Instablaster =)
@Elisha Vincenzo i really appreciate your reply. I got to the site thru google and Im in the hacking process atm.

@Elisha Vincenzo it worked and I actually got access to my account again. Im so happy!
Thank you so much you really help me out !
@Pablo Alfred no problem =)
Actually made a mix template now. I´m going to test it shortly!
I was updating my mix template last night. I'm getting ready to go back to having one template for recording and mixing. I have a mastering template too. These are essential to anyone who wants to build on there experience.
I just merged my recording and mixing into 1 template. Seems easier to me 🤷🏽♂️
I have a lot of templates but none concerning the mixing stage, now I've implemented this. Great tips, thanks Graham!
Been meaning to do this for a while...Finally just built my first one. Hoping to ride it to some solid consistent mixes.
NEVER STOP TEACHING! You are an inspiration.
Love Temps!!!!! Like temps from Others.. I LOve to hear who other approach mixing
This has reminded me I need to update my templates with a couple of new favourite plugins.
Mixing without a template is mind numbing! I used to do it before I knew about this and it was as if I were back using a Fostex 8 trk!
I’m going to have to do this. Will be such a time saver. Thx
Done it! Let's see where it goes!
Making mixing presets is the best answer to mix faster great video!!
Definitely appreciate you Graham. May God continue to bless you
Thank you for this...I wanted a way to make all of my mixes sound the same. Love it and done it!
Very useful template! Thanks! Greetings from Ukraine!
Beside all the great content, Graham throws-a-bone to REAPER users as well!
Thanks again G. :)
Thank you Graham, it was very inspiring!

I haven't used mix templates in the past, but I'm starting a couple album mix projects and I'll be using this great tip. Thanks!
Hey, mix templates are a great idea, I’ve seen it used in pro studios and is a great time saver.
Do you just have this template and pull in consolidated tracks from your recording sessions when ready to mix, or do you try to populate this into the recording session?
I was thinking about making own mixing template (my sound/style) speed up workflow, then I saw this video. Thank you Graham.
This one was very useful. Thanks Graham!
Thank u this really helped me since just starting off with protools✨
Logic user here! I have a template setup for my drum recordings. Super helpful would be an understatement! Makes mixing and editing a breeze just tweaking settings here and there based on my starting points, and keeps all my drum tracks sound consistent song to song!
I is gonna do it. I’s gonna do it now! Try’s ta stop me. Yous ain’t gonna!
Figured alot from trial and error helped alot after i got to see a professional project file oof a producer i like then i jus saved all their presets
You are a genius sir. thanks

@@federkik I use Reaper.

Just finished my recording/mixing template using your advice😊, and I’m no pro by the way, just seems easier to mix as I go
Dope thanks
Brilliant idea, there is beauty in simplicity

I have 6 templates. My basic start position, several client based templates, and a couple of brand based templates, i.e. slate, Psp, Au, Schepps, etc.
I always thought it was better to create a stereo aux mix buss and put plugins on that, instead of the mix buss itself? Thoughts?
Thanks so much Graham! I couldn’t have produced my latest EP without your videos. I appreciate it. Although you only touch on desktop mixing (which is 100% ideal), it completely translates to iOS production which is where I work. I am going to start a mix template in FL Studio Mobile right now!

thank you king
this helped
Great Vid!!!

I've been trying to build a template for a few days thanks
This is the first step to becoming professional.
Thank you very much this is very helpful 👏🏼
Nice! Very helpful.

Great video !!!
Good advise..one problem take long to get to points . But good one
super cool video, today I am going to follow your tip Graham :-)
I just use a startup template, any other template I’ve ended up adjusting to much to make it worth the prep
Great 👍🏼👍🏼
Love the concept but quick question. I noticed you put a widener on the master; wouldn’t that also widen the low end (which is generally undesirable)?
My mixing is inconsistent. I'm gonna use your templates method.
Will make Mix Template in Pro Tools now Thanks Record Revolution...🤗🤗🤗
I'm a big fan Graham as well as a student of many courses if yours. Question though...couldn't I just create a mix template and pull that template up and use it for my tracking session. VERY HELPFUL.
This was really helpful. Thanks a lot.
build in maschine , i didnt use yet. Thanks i keep tryin
Great vid. I will make a stock one just like yours, an Abbey Road one and maybe a couple more. Thanks.
Excellent tutorial Graham. One question how can I get a good and more realistic guitar sound using virtual amps? E.g. Amplitube, Guitar Rig and so on. I'm guitar player and I wanna make a good templates from it. Thanks a lot.

Thank you ..
Template day! Lol. Christian Henson (Spitfire Audio) also posted a template video today where he shared the template files.
Did it!
Should i buy Rode NT 1 A or rode N T 2 A , i want to record studio quality vocals and i am thinking NT 2 A have good sound quality is that right ?
I'm new here. I didn't find any stereo plugins in my Pro tools software.
From now on, mix templates...!!!
i will create a template just for recording so i can bounce out my tracks and send them to my mix engineer faster
I did it
I'm going to... . Thanks.
This would have came in so handy if it was in FL lol.. thanks though man .. always thought about it but never really clicked until I was clicking a whole bunch of EQs for every track and then you upload this video lol smh
Berenice very nice
Don’t know why this never occurred to me! I have templates for song creation but none for mixing.
I've always wanting to have a good template in my gear, but I never had made one up, I kind of thought I would not have enough or not the right kind of template for the mix, I have download several template from the pass, just to see how it is routed, I kind of like the Bussing style the best, and next is the Sub mix template, if that make any kind of sense,,
Are these the FX Channels in Cubase?
FX channels are for effects like Reverb and Delay. Aux tracks are basically Group Tracks in Cubase.
Thanks for this video! I gotta make a better template for myself.
So, you like every AIR and pro tools stock plug-in I guess 😅
Or, and I’m just spit balling here, save as a template 🤨
