The timing is all over the shop. It's because it's too fast. They're missing notes, out of time and trying to cover it by gimics. Shame because I'm sure they're good musicians.

Very sloppy. Rhythms not tight at all.

That is what makes a good musician. The flare timing is over the TOP.

Awful! The melodic subtlety that makes Irish traditional music unique is destroyed by a ghastly mixture of percussive effects speed and noise.

    • @pinkitypink6246

They are decent enough musicians but there's something not right. Is contrived somewhere

    • @lmtt123

Too fast ergo too many mistakes

Paul D it's a right old maze the music is. I think there's three or more routes from the roots. 1. The standard stagnant staid comhlatas bred stuff, exploitative in my opinion of youngsters thru heavy competition, discouraging style and substance (tho pretending that's what they're about) 2. The twisting of trad into I don't know what, trad jazz or whatever, trying too hard to be different and being more about a showy performance (ie, providing distractions for the shallow audiences who would be more into watching than listening, and hearing, in one ear out the other rather than listening. 3. The pure stuff. The stuff that sticks with the tradition which in itself commands and demands improvisation and ornamentation and flexibility but above all substance and style born out of technique. With the emphasis n the subtle yet very obvious rhythms. Music that you can actually dance to, in fact, music that gives you no choice but to dance and move in time to.
Is all horses for courses but numbers one and two are removed from the source of the spring that this is dance music. There's a lot of messy stuff out there purporting to be the stuff, likewise there's a lot of dull same old same old purporting to be the real stuff. I've been watching some videos and performances of young fleadh hopefuls in group settings. They look so trained, perfectly timed choreography of "the looks" and "the look", you know when a group of musicians are playing and they give each other them little glances and looks, randomly and naturally? Well, in these youngster group performances I couldn't help but notice that these exchanged looks appear unnatural and forced, like they've been trained and told at which point to glance, and how to do it. I'm currently listening to remembering des donnelly. The sleeve notes apologise for the poor recording quality yet that adds to it. Many recordings are far too produced to which again loses some of the essence.
I'll add another bit, I want he'd a wonderful rte archive clip about the battering / trebling in the clare sets. How comhlatas had banned it! The fellas in the clip from quilt laugji g at the idea Coming from so called head quarters in Dublin. They say headquarters is here in West clare. Junior crehan makes remark that the dancers set the tempo and that's where he takes his direction from in playing. By watching the feet of the dancers.
Horses for courss and the lads are enjoying making music their own way and if there's plenty of people buying it, fair play to them. Comhlatas don't seem to want anyone involved in playing the music to make a few quid from it, with them it's about the honour and the love. Similar mentality to the gaa. Communism, national socialism, whatever, doing what it does dictating to others while profiting a few fellas at the top.
I can chat. I'm passionate about the tunes and the land but in recent years have woke up to the fact that post partition or whenever the good people of ireland were force fed a load of lies based on national pride and voluntary service. Gone off on tangent. But linked back to the idea if things being contrived for irish pride. Give it an Irish name and the people will buy it and accept it without uestion, believing its us ruling ourselves. When the reality is the landords never really went, the ruling class continued to rule but they worked like crypto Jews, givi g themselves irish names, immersing themselves in the runnings and creation of the Irish societies involved in language, music, sport....theres a dissertation on this topic somewhere in my soul! Do what you live doing and let no standardising organisation stifle your creativity or ambition. Ha ha
