This is the second of their songs that I absolutely adore. The first one was Colors on My Shield. I tend to favor heavy metal that favors running and rhythmic breathing.
Hey French Girl here ! I might remind to everyone that Corsica became French in 1768. Napoleon was born in 1769. We doged a bullet there. Imagine a Genoese Empire. But seriously, imagine the face we had when this guy from whatsisface island that we got yesterday just rose to swallow Europe for breakfast.
In the beginning of the song the line "and soon I will be marching into heaven" is like his arrogance, like he says Yes, I can conquer the heavens, and in the end, when it sound the last time, it is like he prepares to die.
The band Civil War is actually made up of former Sabaton members, which is why it sounds so familiar. They are apparently on good terms with each other. Not sure if you knew or not, but though I'd spread the word.
I was thinking this is some kind of Sabaton copy clone band so I had to google them.....turns out they are the closest to Sabaton without being Sabaton \m/
Yes, they sound like Sabaton, what did you expect when 4 members of the band where in that band? I still think they have their own style and they should sound like Sabaton, because they are part of that sound, they contributed enough to do it, they have that right.
To the title of the emperor in Europe in Catholic lands, you must be coronate by pope, but he did it ownself. That is the reason, why he is "more than god". He sh*t on divine right, mandate from god.
The vocals seem to be a mix of Iron Maiden, Guns n Roses, and Cinderella. With a hint of Brian Johnson of AC/DC. Very old school, which makes me pretty happy.
It is a gross understatement to call this a great song. This has to be one of the best songs of all time! I would love to get it as a wav file or on cd. Yes they still sell those.
"The ideas that underpin our modern world-meritocracy, equality before the law, property rights, religious toleration, modern secular education, sound finances, and so on-were championed, consolidated, codified and geographically extended by Napoleon. To them he added a rational and efficient local administration, an end to rural banditry, the encouragement of science and the arts, the abolition of feudalism and the greatest codification of laws since the fall of the Roman Empire. " -Andrew Roberts, British historian.
The line "im greater than god" in this song is really similar to the line "my will be done" in sabatons carolus rex. It shows how both leaders thought of their power. Even though both saw their empires ruined by the Russians and winter
Civil War took some time to grow on me but this song made me really like them. It has the guitar rhythm of Winged Hussars but the vocals of Carolus Rex and it's about freaking Napoleon! Sabaton could have made an entire album about him already.
Thing is that "all men are created equal" is a bastardized paraphrase from Jefferson (non interventionist deist) of the actual Christian mantra "all men are created in the image of god". The latter though obviously flawed if not religious (like myself) is far more internally consistent and gels better with reality. People aren't equal but there is a level that people need to be treated at.
So when the rhythm kicks in, does anyone else feel the "boys and girls of every age, wouldnt you like to see something strange?" The comparison is spot on.

After his first exile on Elba, Napoleon began to rebuild Le Grande Armee by simply going to the nearest French fortification and the men there followed him. He had that kind of support.

@@popothethird1733he was given absolution, no matter the sins commited, Jesus can forgive anyone of his sins, if you are faithful to him. But do we really know where Napoleon went? No, that is up to God.
*Napoleon* is a sort of consecration for Christian Clavier : from his débuts in cinema, he only played goofy and funny roles, and this series was, for him, the chance to play the role of a great, tragic character.
1:02 During this bridge scene, I have to wonder what the hell the defenders were doing. Why were they just wasting cannonballs on the water and shore? Why didn't they readjust their cannons? Why wasn't there a cannon lined up in front of the bridge? Is this accurate?
I guess that makes sense, but you could still see they were practically aiming at the water. Maybe the lack of one in front of the bridge is for some sort of chivalrous reason.
+Punisherfan123 Or because they still wanted to use the bridge, cannon+wooden bridge does not equal an intact bridge normally. I would assume, and this is a guess, that they wanted the French to come at them and thus hold them at a narrow bridge subjecting them to musket (I will assume they are muskets) fire. This would play to what the weapons needed to have done to hit anything back then. This was still the age where they had to line people up if they hoped to even remotely hit anyone after all. Then the officer in charge of the people trying to cross the bridge would have two choices. Choice one retreat and be pursued by the enemy troops. This tactic would be almost expected so the bridge would need to be intact to mount a successful pursuit. Or Choice two: charge, probably take heavy casualties and hope they win by putting everyone to the bayonet (plus if they destroy it who knows where the nearest bridge would be, those things take time to make). As for hitting the water the cannons were still woefully inaccurate but I will assume they were aiming at the other shore to kill them before they cross. Placing a cannon there would only be beneficial if they had canister shot (since it converts the cannon into a shotgun and wouldn't destroy the bridge). The problem with that is that it means you can't line up and shoot them making the most use out of your muskets because there is now a gap in your lines to accommodate the cannon and canister shot is only used when you are desperate and they are right on top of you, plus they don't give every cannon they make both cannonballs and canister, especially in the pre-industrial age. Plus in that day and age cannons were not light weight so to move a cannon to the bridge here is what one would have to do: hitch it up to a horse (that is a more time consuming process then what you think) ride the horse (that is now pulling a cannon along) down to the front of the bridge without getting yourself or the horse shot, unhitch the cannon, and reload it (again all without getting shot while the enemy is charging across the bridge). That is why cannon emplacements typically stay where they are when they are set up unless they really need to be moved. Hitting the bridge would be a bad idea beyond destroying it, hitting the wooden surface will probably reduce shrapnel too which would make the cannons less effective, or possibly even just punch holes in the bridge making them hit the water anyway. Strategically besides if they took choice one and retreated the cannons would be in good position to attack them as they run away on the other side of the shore. So not so much gentlemen as following orthodox strategy and what was probably common sense for their time. At least that is my two cents.
Despite his failures of diplomacy and grand strategy, Napoleon was unquestionably one of the most gifted commanders in military history. And unlike Alexander of Macedon, Napoleon fought armies at least as formidable as his own and some of the other most gifted military minds in history instead of hordes of desert savages.
Ah thats Unfair Alexander also fought an army that was as formidable as his own, the desert savages you call were made from all kinds of people from Greeks to Indians Iranians and Egyptians etc... and were still seen as the strongest army in the world until their crushing defeat. Hell Alexander and most importantly Phillip reformed the Macedonian doctrine in big part thanks to Eastern tactics and applied them to the greek way of Warfare, thus he got the best of both worlds and it showed. I would agree however that Napoleon had it much tougher because where Alexander only had to win a few decisive battles, which he did, Napoleon had to win several decisive wars and campaign not even to dominate Europe eventhough it was his goal obviously, but just so he and France could remain revolutionary and not be bested back into the terrible monarchy

The line "im greater than god" in this song is really similar to the line "my will be done" in sabatons carolus rex. It shows how both leaders thought of their power. Even though both saw their empires ruined by the Russians and winter
I like how that one soldier got shot in the arm while aiming but didn't flinch. That was how powerful Napoleonic France was lol
Civil War took some time to grow on me but this song made me really like them. It has the guitar rhythm of Winged Hussars but the vocals of Carolus Rex and it's about freaking Napoleon! Sabaton could have made an entire album about him already.
well, Civil War is made up of ex-sabaton members so it makes sense they would sound similar.
When all people are equal, but you are still more equal...
@@janehrahan5116Jefferson took it from Locke and Locke likely took it from Bible.

1:02 During this bridge scene, I have to wonder what the hell the defenders were doing. Why were they just wasting cannonballs on the water and shore? Why didn't they readjust their cannons? Why wasn't there a cannon lined up in front of the bridge? Is this accurate?
+Punisherfan123 Because cannons weren't as accurate back then. I don't know why there wasn't one in front of the bridge, though.
+Punisherfan123 This is a movie.
+Pawel Huszcza Yes, it is.
