Nigel Blackwell is one of Britain's best (yet overlooked) songwriters and lyricists. So many of HMHB's lyrics make me chuckle with their wry social observations, mocking of mediocre C-list celebrities and satire of popular culture.
Yet this beautiful, achingly melancholic, song about ageing and mortality, and the loss of loved ones, actually brings a lump to my throat. "Hands I once held, no longer there .... try and get used to me, and not us."
Definitely my fave song on the album (which I also think is one of their best. lyrically and musically).
I couldnt agree more . The 02 Liverpool gig in september was ace
Cambridge junction int spring
He's not overlooked, he's glad to be where he is and so are the fans. Would not want them to become massive, a National Treasure, but the nation does not deserve them.
This is poetry in the guise of the very best of early Buzzcocks...what more could you ask for?
This is just beautiful. "Hands I once held, no longer there".
Camped out on a lower slope
Dog-tired at the toposcope
Hot soup in the aftermath
Salad days in many ways
Then time creeps up unseen
And it puts me back at the front of the bus
Hands I once held no longer there
Grey falls on the green
As I try and get used to ‘me’ and not ‘us’
Where I’m going I’m not sure that I care
Still thought I could play out wide
Felt sure I could stay onside
But stiff limbs and a shin which looks like
Inter’s end on derby day says
Time’s crept up unseen
And it’s stuck me back at the front of the bus
Bound who knows where
Free of charge
The situation’s lean
Though it could be worse
So I don’t make a fuss
Still evading capture
Still at large
Somebody’s mumbling Galatians
Somewhere a wolf-print fleece needs 90 degrees
Pushchair-related confrontations
Pastoral conceits, Italian fancies, comic glees
No stroll of a summer’s eve
Neck brace and a shower sleeve
Hot soup in the afterlife
I’ve got my fingers crossed, because
Old Father Time’s arrived
And he’s sat by me at the front of the bus
Here I am as there I was before
Things I hold dear
Held in place by means of a surgical truss
Sorry, not in service any more
Thanks thanxx
+Fantastic thank you for typing all that out, great lyrics.
Toposcope. New one on me - thought it was top of Stoke 😛. Toposcope..in a song...blimey.
@@stevenivv only HMHB could manage this feat :)
What is life without Half Man Half Biscuit?
Like a broken pencil, pointless..
Nigel is one of the best lyricists of all time. Up there with Blake, Keats and Shakey for me. For all their sarcasm and whimsy, there is something dark and deep in most of their songs. This is no exception.
"a shin which looks like Inter's end on derby day"!
What a fookin line!!!
The lyrics may be great but people don't talk enough about how great their riffs are.
2:33 is pure biscuit
@@thanxxYep.
This is ridiculously good . Some of the best lyrics I've heard. Really quite emotional. Brilliant melody also
Anyone else think this is a truly wonderful sad beautiful ode to getting old, and loss. "Hands I once held no longer there" heartbreaking stuff just casually thrown away genius
Not sure that NB minds being overlooked but agreed that he's one of our best. He doesn't avoid difficult subjects and finds the humour, pathos and poignancy in every one. Add to that they're a tight, excellent four piece rock band who seem happy to play decent sized venues around the UK - I've seen the loads over the years. Lucky me - but if you haven't seen them then take note of this tune as they won't be around forever.
Shins that look like Inters end on Derby days....
Priceless Nigel Blackwell
