This is a song from the repertoire of Sephardi music, that of the Jews expulsed from the Iberian peninsula after the Reconquista. They would come to inhabit the Mediterranean basin, principally the lands of the Ottoman Empire, therefore adopting the sonority and styles of various regional forms of music from that broad Mediterranean and Oriental continuum. This specific song comes from Smyrna in Anatolia.
The lyrics are in the Ladino language, an offshoot of Old Castillian that has become its own distinct romance language.

My hometown of Thessaloniki, a multicultural centre for millennia, had such a large Sephardic community that Ladino was the language most spoken in the city at some point.
They are woven into the city's canvas. Shout out to my mom's best friend, last one alive of the old gang, still going strong at 95. And also our beloved Molho, the book store family.
My (sephardic) ancestors came very close, in Didimotike.

Because the language of the song is pretty much Spanish, especially in its pronunciation. It literally is "old" Spanish that has been kept "unevolutioned", both in its spoken and in its written form, in such way that it's like a preservation of medieval Spanish which is much closer to modern Spanish than what medieval English is to modern English
The sephardic jews and moors left a unique legacy in spain and all of latin america culturally and genetically

Didn't recognise your voice there, love this arrangement! I always thought this particular song was from Medieval Spain, had no idea we had those types of melodies in Anatolia. Out of curiosity - is there a reason for your pronunciation here to be more "Spanish/Castillan" than in your previous Ladino songs? I'm only familiar with modern Turkish Ladino, got me wondering!
I have a feeling you would like my all-time favourite Turkish Sephardic song, so since it's pretty rare and there's a chance you might not know it yet: Manyana i Manyana. To my knowledge there are only two versions on youtube: an acapella archival record of Kobi Zarko, and an arrangement by the great Iberian band Milo ke Mandarini. Hope you give it a listen and enjoy it as much as I enjoy your music.

Yeah most Sephardi songs actually don't date back to the Iberian era, and are from after the expulsion. As for the accent, it's just lack of attention haha. I speak Spanish (what little I know) with a northern Castillian accent because that's what I was exposed to living in southern France, and Ladino is so close to Spanish that I can't stop my Spanish accent coming through if I'm not paying attention, and in all honesty I threw this one together pretty quickly.

The sephardic lyrics of this song seem to me very similar to modern Spanish.
Because there is a very short pronunciation distance between medieval Spanish and modern Spanish, and Ladino is like a ""fossil"" of medieval Spanish - while the Spanish language evolutioned and had its writing changed into the way it is nowadays, Ladino has kept the old ways and solidified them into writing. That's why the verbs end with -i (tomí, casí) instead of doing it with -e, because the -e is a post-Medieval phonetical evolution that the Ladino has not undergone

Just wondering if there's some confusion in the lyrics. You sign "Si tu no tienes amante, yo te haré defender" (If you don't have a lover, I shall defend you), The lyrics as written in the description say "Yo dejara de aprender" (I'll stop learning?).
Just saying, the lenguage he's singing in is not spanish, but ladino, so it may be because of that that the meaning changes
