Yea dude and his Quasimoto production is out there and banging. And his blue note invasion and his album with MED and blu! Madlib easy top 3 for me. Very suprised he didn’t even mention madlib in the video
AVAA - 5 is way too difficult to fit, but from the perspective of personal enjoyment, I have to say EL-P would be up there for me. RZA is definitely the one you picked that resonates with me the most.
AVAA JDilla is my favorite producer because all of my early hip hop and R&B. Pharcyde, Eryka Badu, Slum Village, Common, MFDoom, The Roots. All my favorite songs were a creation of JDilla. But you have great lists. Love your content.
sounwave is a sneaky pick for all his work with kendrick and TDE. one thing going for and against him is that he doesn’t have a signature/recognizable sound, but can do a little bit of everything really really well
I’d argue he sooooooort of has his own sound ? It’s generally quite ‘moody’ and there’s often a neo soul/jazz aspect in there .. Actually you know what aha he does have like a proper specific sound
I asked you about this video in the premiere of one of your last videos, really happy that you decided to do it. Been waiting for it since the top 5 rappers video. Cheers
Chronic 2001 instrumental versiin was the only rap instrumental album that I listened on a daily basis circa 2000. I found so many details there, so perfect
AVAA. Pete Rock is my favourite. How many producers have flipped a Fela Kuti sample? And "The World Is Yours" from Illmatic I can play that shit for ever in a continuous loop and will NEVER get old So Pete Rock, Madlib, RZA, Alchemist, Ye.
I was blown away with the production of Timbaland on Bjork album circa 2005, being a fan of his rap producing at the time at that moment I thought that guy has range
AVAA Prof. listen to more Madlib & then let us know when you’re ready to put him at #1. I appreciate the Mannie Fresh shoutout, so many underrated southern producers across the 90s & 2000s like him
Avaa. Casey Casum was the nickname of my rapper friend, whose biggest come up was opening for the Black Eyed Peas in their heyday. Missy was my all time fav back then. I also live in the city where the only Blockbuster exists. Steve Miller band was the first concert I went to. So much correlation for me in this video!
Avaa! Glad to see more flowers given to these classics. Considering what the landscape of hip hop looks like without Wu and RZA is a challenging thought, it all feels incredibly foundational
AVAA professor check out the milo (rap ferreira) + aj suede project it dropped december 2022. Its called WHAT THEM DOGS DONT KNOW THEY KNOW, under the G’s Us alias
Avaa! My top 5 are J Dilla, DJ Paul/Juicy J, Kanye, Neptunes and Clams Casino Hms: madlib, mf doom, rza, alchemist, dizzee rascal Have you ever done a deep dive into the memphis scene, particularly three six mafia and their insane influence on trap music today?
i have a long list of deep cuts for the bomb squad the entire Ice Cube album they produced is imo the best public enemy album "the n*gga you love to hate" and "endangered species" are incredible production wise that album blew my mind the first time i heard it. but the king of bomb squad deep cuts is poison by bel biv devoe. Im glad dre didn't make your list, he's good but more of a musicologist than a producer imho.
Large Professor is obviously not the most popular of the greatest producers ever, but he is nonetheless one of them. As far as NY hiphop goes, I think he’s is the most influential. He’s the glue between so much of what we know as the golden era- Kool G, Rakim, Nas, Mobb Deep, Q Tip, Pete Rock, and Premo. He influenced all of these and discovered a few of them. He suffers from being so great early on that he was young enough to get exploited and not given credit for what went on to be iconic works.
Regarding your comment saying if Kanye isnt on the list people must be joking. For me personally I was listening to his influences a lot my exposure to Kanye was do or die, and when I started hearing his solo work I didn't like it felt like pop music, at the time I was busy catching up on instrumental Hip Hop thst came before. When he released MBDTF I noticed a quality to it that was undeniable but I was put off by his desperation. I myself suffer from forms of mental illness and I have to actively battle my various egos that overgrow like thorns and cut into me, the way Kanye described his highs and lows seemed to mirror what I was trying to avoid about myself. Delusion I can make myself feel a certain possitive way but it comes at a cost. A combination of me recognizing Kanye samples too much, already enjoying his influences, and an aversion to a personality that mirrors my own in a way that makes me uncomfortable. Life of Pablo is my favorite Kanye album.
AVAA - Do a dilla deep dive (DaDDD). Hitboy, Sounwave are honerable mentions. Ye is the Beatles of hip hop. 0. Dilla, 1. Kanye, 2. Madlib, 3. 9th Wonder, 4. DJ Premier, 5. Alchemist
Jolly rappers? I don't know if it counts, but in 2017 I went to see Mos Def and, right before starting the show, he came on stage to hand out flowers to the audience.
@@professorskye I’m pretty sure you are more familiar with his work more than you think. Jaylib, Quasimoto, Madvillian, The Loot Pack, Projects with Freddie Gibbs. Also you mention you were just getting into J Dilla but I’m pretty sure you are more familiar with his work more than you think so as well. A Tribe Called Quest, Slum Village and The Pharcyde just to name a few.
DJ Muggs Dr Dre DJ Premier Dilla Madlib but it is hard. Hms: DJ Spinna, Bomb Squad, Marly Marl, RZA Katalyst, Plutonic Lab, Suff Daddy, Rza, DJ Shadow, Nujabes, Kidkanevil, Prince Paul, list is long.
I love ya Skye but I can't believe you said R.D. isn't Vol 3 when Vol 3 is one Jays lesser works even though it has some Jays top songs but none by Timbaland and R.D. is his best, at least top 2. But like you said it's sll opinion but man that threw me off
Spoiler alert: I knew Skye would have Ye in the top 3 but I am a little surprised by that rank 1 and the lack of Dre in the top 5. AVAA Skye keep it up.
AVAA crime of the highest order that madlib isn’t on this list… the unseen is probably the best produced hip hop album of all time (arguably next to madvillainy, which is madlib again, and j dilla’s donuts, which i won’t count because it’s an instrumental hip hop album) using your “new york” analogy, i think it’s absurd when the argument for best rap producer ISN’T between madlib or j dilla, lol
AVAA Pharrell Williams J Dilla JPEGMAFIA Conductor Williams The Alchemist Funny enough I was not expecting Kanye as your number one. I don’t know how or why!
I disagree with you calling Dr.Dre an honorable mention, but in other producer videos call Kanye and other people a "curator". Dre was the original curator, and still is.
ofc there is way crazier shit especially in the underground but for someone like Kanye who was arguably one of the biggest artists alive at the time it is pretty bold and noteworthy. Marvel has never done anything near as authentic as yeezus even if we agree it isnt the most insane shit ever released lol cmon
i mean it wasn't the most insane shit and i basically never defend kanye but alongside mbdtf it has to be acknowledged how he repped two radically different sides of chicago's music, whether it's the vocal gospel singing in churches or the newer drill scene (there's a reason that the biggest and iirc only rap feature on yeezus is chief keef)
Thank you. We need more advocates for the new Kanye (artistically). I’m guessing at least 75% of people still believe his first 3 albums are his peak but from the perspective that 808s to Now is actually the better version of him(which is true) yes it makes sense to say he’s the top producer ever. People think because he has so many co writers and co producers that what he’s doing is less special than someone with the skill do it solo but I think there’s an argument to be made it’s equally impressive how Kanye pieces together so many different parts coming from such an eclectic group of different sources every album to always create something new but also great ,cohesive and unmistakably Kanye.
Nooooo… 😭 Loved certain picks. Marley Marl. Bomb Squad. But Kanye, 5 car lenghts? I disagree man. That’s the high ceilings and a loooooot of looooows. That’s the style over substance pick. You Can't make this list before listening to pinata and bandana 😅

Sounwave defo needs a mention as I think KDot wouldn't be as versatile as a MC without him, he really pushes the boundaries musically speaking
1. RZA

Listening to you mention Masta Ace I just remembered his song Good ol love produced by 9th wonder, what a gem, that sample is perfectly crafted 💎

Erick Sermon? 🤔 didn't know he produced let alone to this kind of level

Listen to Madlib's production work on both Quas albums, Madvillainy and the Gibbs lps and he'll be comfortably top 3 at the least
Please listen to Special Herbal Volume 0-9 by MF DOOM. Some of those samples and mixing are the best I’ve ever heard and I feel you’re missing out
AVAA. Best in my opinion Flying Lotus, Knxwledge, Madlib, Metal Fingers, J Dilla.
This should be interesting! My list would be DJ Premier, Rza, Alchemist, Dr. Dre, and El-P.
EL-P is my favorite producer of all time. He continues to be disrespected, but it’s ok, he still a legend
Preemo should never be taken off any list esp if you got Kanye in it. @@ahopelessnecromancer7712
Commenting before even watching…I think we’re on a similar wavelength so🤞hoping bomb squad is on here. (Edit: and there they are! 🙏)
Marly Marl was the first to slice drums (which he did by accident). So for changing hiphop... that alone is huge.
No Pete Rock, No Premier, No Q Tip, No Large Professor, No Eric Sermon, No Dre. But Kanye and… Timberland! 😒
