    Absolutely superb lecture. I'm so excited this course is available on UA-cam, thank you! I have a BA Honors in History with emphasis in five fields, but I never took art history. I have felt that loss over the years. If you're a student intent on a degree in history, I STRONGLY recommend you include at least some art history course work. I should go so far as to say that at least some art history coursework ought to be a requirement for a degree. Thank you, Professor Clark!

    Howdy Dr Clark,
    I was looking lookin around for a little extra umph in my studying for the Praxis Art Content Knowledge exam, going towards my teaching license in Art Ed k-12, and I am so lucky I came across your page! I have always enjoyed Art History and your lectures have made it even more fun. Thorough, accurate, and pleasant to listen to. I am also taking inspiration from the teaching perspective hehe.
    Thank you so much for making these!

    I want to say thank you for your amazing lectures! I was never really interested in art, but this year went to see Uffici gallery in Florence thinking - I just stop at what I like and if I do not like anything I just leave. I did enjoy what I saw quite a lot. Then just few month ago I went to see Rotko, in my country - Latvia we have exposition of his works. This made me think that I want to understand what artists were fighting against to go so radical way. This what brought me to search of art history lectures. I started in coursera but - no good, then I got lucky with your lectures. Decided to start from the very beginning, with your 2710 course and just finished last lecture from 2720. Just great! Very interesting, I got answers to all my questions and I do look around me with different eyes, I see buildings, i see art. I will keep looking and learning. Thank you - covid 19 and Travis Lee Clark. p.s. I am 52, never is too late to learn :)

    Thank you Dr Clark for this wonderful series. I have a history degree and took two art history classes but still find myself forgetting a lot and wanting to unpack all that again. I just went to both Ghetty musuems and had so many questions that I hope to uncover here ❤

    Mr. Clark,
    Your video lectures are a treasure. I found the sections on Egypt after reading a book on Amarna, and they were so informative I've decided to watch the whole course. I really appreciate the high-quality images, the detailed explanations, and all the maps.
    Looking at history through the lens of art adds perspective. For instance, I like the idea of how the Greeks threw off the orientalizing influence of the East during the Persian War, ushering in the naturalism of Classical Greece.
    It seems a lot of the naturalistic sculptures that exhibit such anatomic detail were placed atop temples, high above the viewer. Could such detail be seen from that distance? Plus, the sculptures were painted which likely somewhat obscured the lifelike carving. Was the attention to detail more than just for the viewer, like the detail inside a master watchmakers pocket watch?
    Best,
    Mike

    I lived in a communist country. The communists used to date all the events with BCE and CE("before common era" and "common era") as they heavily tried to erase any Christian trace from our lives. After the fall of communism I thought I will never encounter that notation again. But here it is, communism has reconquered the world through the back door!
    p.s. I appreciate your lectures, they are great, my only problem is the above one.

    • @crunchyduck
      @crunchyduck 2 роки тому +2

      BCE and CE is just common Gregorian calendar notation - 1920 CE is the same as AD 1920.
      When discussing history they're very common terms to come across.

    • @Gorboduc
      @Gorboduc 2 роки тому

      I like to trigger the commies by telling them CE stands for the Christian Era, which is what it always meant lol.

Luckily I didn't skip the introduction part! Thank you for your free education on youtube!

    But if the class was as entertaining as yours I wouldn’t test out.
    But it’s more of a pebble on my shoe of a credit that didn’t transfer lol. Great class.

    When I was an undergraduate in the 90's studying in an art school in the East Coast, the profs there certainly didn't include the Near East as part of the Western Canon; they started with the Greeks and Romans, and did not mention how much Greco-Roman civilisation was shaped and influenced by the NE, as if the Classics were sprung out of nowhere!

    In fact, there is a small gap regarding to the story ofcoffee. The tree was discovered in Ethiopia and transported to Yemen. The Yemenis were the first whom make a drink from the fruit of this tree and called it kahwa whic mean in the original term in old Arabic wine, and after that it was transported to the Ottoman Empire through trade that started from The port of Mocha, hence the name Mocha came , and it was forbidden until the era of Sultan Suleiman sec who permitted drinking it and transporting it to Europe.

    Darth Vader was my hero as for Star Wars the first three were the best absolute classics, the rest not so much did not meet the mark,but that’s my opinion.
    Everything is subjective as every man made object has a purpose and in some cases the same object will have different purposes and meaning with different cultures.
    As for the way you speak , you speak real clear to me

    If the identity that comes with western art is synonymous to sophistication and depth, would non western culture lack those?

    I think the reason why Islamic art isn't considered as Western unlike ancient egyptian art is that if you wanna put a topic inside another topic, it should be smaller than the one you put in. And Islamic art has a huge topic which has different variations in art such as ebru, tezhip, minyatür, çini, hat, kalem işi, cilt, kat'i... etc.
