    One of the best tutorials I've seen on the technique. It seems like the cutter in this case makes some great details while being relatively small as well. Many Thanks for your efforts.

    A gem of a video that gives you enough of the basics and will leave you feeling empowered to try etching something immediately. I especially appreciate that he does not edit out little things that can go wrong. Well worth a view if you want to learn a simpler, less toxic way to etch metal.

    Wow 19 mins from start to finish with no cuts or editing. This was super cool and interesting for me since I've never seen anything like it before, and I'm still amazed at how quick a project it is.

      Have you tryed rainwater on copperplate. Perhaps it takes considerably longer. A month or two, but with the same results, depending on how acidic the air is where you live. Good luck.😎

    you also could make some kind of bowl on the vinyl out of clay around the to be etched area, fill it with the salt water solution, atache a wire to the clip of the power supply and put the wire in said bowl with the salt water solution to get an even etching. The wire is there because a wire is cheaper to replace than an aligator clip

      That idea occurred to me too. The clay moat at least, having a depth of liquid, but didn't get as far as thinking about an immersed wire. Good idea, especially for steel.......

    Skip to 7:00 if you already have a $2000 vinyl cutter sitting next to you and have a good idea how to go about cutting and applying a vinyl stencil on aluminum plate.
    Good tutorial though. I like how you had the camera mounted and zoomed in rather than holding it in one hand like some noobs do and making us seasick.
    FYI. You could also weed the background instead and transfer the logo on, then etch the plate. That would give you a shiny logo and a dull grey background.

    Got another metal plate the same size? Connect the other lead to it and sandwich a salt water saturated paper towel between it and the stencil objective. Apply brick for pressure and let sit for an hour while energized. You should have a more consistent etch. The go back with q-tip for fine detail in small corners.

      Not at all, the only dangerous gas is chlorine and it's produced at such microscopic levels that it's not an issue. Most of the gas is oxygen and hydrogen, both harmless. You would need to do something 10' square in an enclosed small room before it would even be the slightest danger.

      You can buy Alligator clips to replace the end. If I were to do it again though I think I would twist a single wire around a thin stick (chopstick, wood skewer or similar) and attach it that way, then just replace the thin wire when it corrodes, keep the clip out of the liquid that way.

    • @sublimationman
      @sublimationman 6 років тому +2

      Yes it would but it's not a big deal. First off I am using a power supply that has short circuit protection, if you use a battery instead it will just spark a little, nothing major would happen except it would leave a mark on the piece and maybe ruin it.

    Question, would connecting the 2 electrodes to the plate, and dunking the entire thing in a glass of Sal Water not have the same effect?

    • @sublimationman
      @sublimationman 6 років тому +4

      It might. The issue is you need to have the one electrode touching the metal plate and it would then also eat away at that spot and the back if you don't cover it as well. I suppose you could attach the electrode to the back and then cover it all with vinyl or tape. Many ways to do this, I show only a fraction.

    • @KaitharVideo
      @KaitharVideo 6 років тому +1

      This kind of etching is electrolysis, that's why you need the liquid bit connected to power. If you just connect the 2 electrodes to the plate there won't be a circuit through the electrolyte (the salt water in this case) so you won't pull anything off the plate. Plus fully submerging the plate has other issues like even etching and would probably need more power to do the job since it's etching over a larger area at once.

    • @jennarover7398
      @jennarover7398 6 років тому

      You have to connect the negative to another piece of steel that is in the dip. people usually use a scrap piece of steel when they do it that way because it will damage the steel. but, the answer to your question is yes. many people do it that way. usually they tape off the whole piece of steel or, paint it all except the etch and then leave it in the dip to get a nice deep etching.

  • @Rustishack206

    Why didn't he just put the vinyl on the plate and pick off the pieces instead of transferring twice??
