When Staunton sings "You can do it," she's so in the zone and it's impeccable. This is such an actorly performance that's brilliant to behold.

A performance like this takes a phenomenal actress, and one with guts to make a piece her own. A standing ovation is barely enough after something like this. Incredible!

Bloody hell, who'd have thought Umbridge could sing?!?

I KNOW! This is my absolute favorite production of "Gypsy"! Imelda is so freaking amazing. And, her performance of "Rose's Turn" was so unbelievably flawless and heartbreaking, she made me cry.

@@Nacho-Mamma when I saw it, the audience gave a standing ovation after "Roses Turn" and stopped the show. Have NEVER seen that in theatre, ever. Flat out the best live performance I have ever seen. Her Mrs Lovett was great, this performance was stunning and monumental

I feel like Staunton really captures Rose’s longing and life-long desperation to be a star. Those moments where she grits her teeth and aggressively holds Gypsy’s face it’s like she’s so desperate to be a star she’ll do anything

Okay , every rose has their qualities : Patti LuPone sang her heart out, Bernadette peters was hilarious and yet had our hearts melting by the end , Angela Lansbury was the mother figure of them all while tyne daily and bette midler put on a phenomenal show
    but
Imelda Staunton was by far the best actress and thats what makes Mama Rose

*Angela Lansbury was the mother figure of them all *
I think that honor belongs to the originator of the role, Ethel Merman.

No way. This lady did a fine job but no one, no one touches Merman, Lansbury, and Daly. Lapone was yelly and Peter's wasn't believable in the role from the beginning. Why? It's the TYPE of woman that makes role. In a word: lusty.

    • @stuartyirui

Imelda is fantastic. But so was Ethel Merman in the orignal. Playing against type, she revealed as much as Staunton in a different way. The two are champions of this great musical.

I was amazed when I saw this on PBS. She reminded me of American actress Jean Stapleton. Jean had (she passed away recently) the ability to carry a dramatic or comedic scene using only her facial expressions, the way she trembled her lip, or what you saw in her eyes, the subtle puffing out of cheeks....that to me is the sign of a great actor or actress. To be able to tell a story, to hold the scene silent, yet still convey all of the emotions that are involved.

Imelda is better than the original cast member. This is fabulous. Rarely is a revival actor better than an original cast performer. Wow.

Interesting that you say Imelda overacted as Rose. IMHO Jennifer Holliday chews the scenery in Dreamgirls (but I'm only judging by her Tony Awards appearance) and sadly a one hit wonder! I never saw Tyne Daly and hear she was amazing but the soundtrack is unlistenable (off key and flat). Bernadette Peters sadly miscast as Mama Rose. Patti LuPone played a psycho mama and sang the sh*t out of her songs in an otherwise high school production of a Broadway show - weak sets and production values but granted it started off as an Encores show. Imelda was riveting onstage - a manic pitbull of a Mama!

I've been looking at all the "Rose's Turns" for the past hour or more. Patty Lupone seems the most real. On a PC screen, I don't see Staunton OVERacting, but I see her acting. I'm aware of her technique and skill. I wouldn't be so aware of that in a theater.
Rose is not a sweet, kind woman. Bette Midler and Bernadette Peters are more fun to watch sing the role on my PC/TV screen at my desk because they are sweet and kind and not overbearing, even when playing the role. They are not the best, but they are far easier to take.

For what it's worth, my favorite Rose and overall GYPSY production was the 2010 Brazilian production. Totia Meireles was a force of nature! She is my definite Rose. The whole production is my favorite, because it made me fall in love with the show. I never cared for it before, one way or another -- and I saw the much-lauded 2008 Broadway revival. I suppose because the British/American productions tend to overemphasize the humor in GYPSY, as if it were a TV sitcom, and the characters come off as caricatures. The Brazilian production treated it more like a drama with songs. I mean, all the humor was still there, but it felt natural, not forced. And for the first time, I felt for Louise. Adriana Garambone was just magnificent, as well. Best final dressing room scene I've ever witnessed!

because she's key because the way she reacts to what the character imelda is singing and doing sheds mama rose in a whole different light. She is key, even though she is not doing anything. This performance is definitive of the characters in this musical. Does that make sense?? 😊

    • @musicaltheatergeek79
      @musicaltheatergeek79 6 років тому

*Brian O*Neil* Rose is a patriot, always inserting the American flag into the acts. That's a running gag in the show.
