A diesel truck can go much further than an electric, and takes 10 to 15 minutes to fill up. An electric takes 30 to an hour just to partially charge. Not to mention the weight of the battery and the wear n tear of the tires and breaks. And the insane pollution to create and dispose of the battery…. No way

    • @douglee4687
      @douglee4687 6 місяців тому +4

93% of the battery is recyclable (see Redwood Materials) , the brakes will last the life of the truck because it uses regenerative braking where the motors turn into generators as the accelerator is released, turning the kenetic energy of the trucks mass into electrical energy that recharges the battery. The truck can slow to a stop without ever using the brakes.
Maintenance: diesel engines and transmissions have hundreds of moving parts requiring maintenance (~$15,000/year). A single AC motor has ONE moving part plus two ball bearing. Everything in the drive train is sealed and requires no maintenance. The Tesla semi has three 500 hp motors and a gear reduction system but no transmission (no shifting gears), just continuous smooth acceleration. As an aside, an AC motor produces 100% torque at zero Rpm.
The average diesel semi is 400 to 600 hp.
Pepsi has 21 Tesla semi's in a pilot program, one of which recently completed a fully loaded delivery trip of 1,048 miles in one 24 hour period using two crews.
The diesel engine was invented in1893 and has been perfected over 130 years. The electric semi has been on the road commercially for less than a year. It will evolve and improve in every way. And much more rapidly than the diesel did.
BTW, do you think making all the components for a diesel engine are pollution free?

@@douglee4687great points, and you’re correct about all of this. The original comment about infeasible charging times and capacities also has some truth also. I believe the answer to be a combination of electric drive and diesel fuel for range extending and on-board charging. Edison Motors has done a god job at proving this out.

i own an electric bicycle and the battery weight is really a huge problem, the bicycle is almost unridable when the battery is off because it weights like fuckin 20 kilos, also it takes 6 hours to charge to full and its condition worsens cycle by cycle. I like to ride it but i made a mistake buying that to be honest.

At this point and time, electric semi's are totally impractical. You don't go down hill enough to recharge the batteries on a semi when you are hauling 80,000 pounds. That's why we gear down and use the jake brakes when going down hill. I can't imagine what would happen to the supply chain if semi's were stopping to recharge every 300 miles.

He's not saying let's replace all trucks with electric alternatives tomorrow and charge them using the brakes.
He's saying long term electric trucks are feasible for reasons like that, with better batteries of course.
People literally said the exact same thing about gas cars. "Where the hell am I gonna get gas?"
"Good luck using one of those, they break down and there's only one repair shop in the city"
"I don't care how fast they go it's not the same as a horse"

How come people blindly trust whatever Elon Musk says as fact. The first big lie applies to all electric vehicles is : no need for gears! because an electric motor has a level torque curve over all rpm there's no need for gears? My charge is this is a overstated exaggerated claim, just like saying a push bike doesn't need gears because the rider has a constant power output over all rpms, reality is hill climbing requires a lower gear ratio to reduce load on motor, battery, controller etc. This applies to all electric vehicles, semi with heavy loads will require even more gears for both climbing or descending down a hill to recharge without runaway, for an motor (electric or Ice, whatever) to remain dominant over load requires reduction gears for hills, then when on flat surfaces a higher ratio should be selected to reduce rpm and frictional losses etc that go along with higher rpm, for an easy understood example: a battery powered drill requires at least 2 gears, for large loads, ie large diameter drill bit need lower drilling rpm to be able to provide more torque whereas smaller diameter drilling needs higher rpms and less torque, if electric drill motors can benefit from gears, how much more necessary for automotive due to load variations?
People are being Scammed ignoring by that point alone never mind the need to carry along large battery packs with very poor power to weight ratio. I think electric car manufacturers thinks simular to Flat Earther's either dumb or willfully oblivious to reality, ironically that applies even to Mr Spaceman himself Elon Musk, He is very good at selling a lie more that any other basic fundamental engineering skills or concepts, so my question is why do we accept everything Elon Musk claims in blind faith, just because Elon says its a good idea to live multi planetary doesn't mean he is right, in fact it's just another dumb claim.

Most ev’s do in fact have 1 gear. The taycan and the original roadster had 2. A quick google search and reading for 2 minutes confirmed this. The article on unitedautosonline broke it down very easily. I get that ev’s have their problems: not as good range, not as fast to “fill up”, the grid isn’t ready, not as good in the super cold, the fires are objectively worse for the environment… but each of these claims is exaggerated worse than the hippies exaggerate how their Tesla will save the world. And people also tend to forget how expensive/hard it is to own a gas car. Just yesterday I had to replace the battery for my gas car after my car wouldn’t start in freezing rain. It want even that cold, the batteries for gas cars just suck. 1 year ago I had to replace the transmission on a 7 year old car (luckily my warranty wasn’t quite expired and I didn’t have to front the 11000 dollar bill. The engine also burns over a liter of oil every month but Hyundai said it’s “within tolerance” and won’t do anything about it.
TL/DR: do a google search before trashing something and stop pretending your shit doesn’t stink.

One electric train is much much more efficient than dozens of these electric tractor units. Much greater loads over much longer distances for a factoon of the aggro. Use the units for local work only.

That's great and all. But I wonder how well these things are going to work in sub 0 climates that most truckers face.... Range loss, God forbid if you want to use the heat. This whole idea is preposterous. internal combustion, It's the engine of freedom and what America was built on.

sounds like a need for easily replaceable battery p[acks to target the intended use this could offer the the improvement in recharging times that bring refueling into the timeframe of a ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) powered vehicle.

Awesome, except you put a really stupid cab on top of it in a bid to look edgy and new. Edison Motors was thinking of taking the Tesla truck and putting a normal cab on it, more suited to heavy duty operation. Luckily for them, you took too long, and they built the entire thing. It’s edgy because it looks like old school ideas. It can eat your blob for lunch.

Elon y not make a high bird where the diesel works like a train ? and I understand propane can burn simultaneously with diesel that would make it burn cleaner or use a mixture of biodiesel/protrulum diesel or puer bio. Ps does the top of the trailer have solar panels on top?

I can't grasp why a better Alternator cant be Created that charges the Batteries like they do now? I have asked a few "Brilliant" minded people and was informed it is because the amount of Energy they frictionally create is to much drag on the output and therefore negates itself with insufficient charging ability.
I say, why Not then have multiple charging capibilities from Wind inlet turbines, solar and also a device(dont laugh) a Whined Up reverse tension by Spring that can Lock in the tension and release for motion like the reverse whind up toys we had as kids?? It worked for them?
Why couldn't that apply in a larger scale to propel a Vehicle?? Scoffers can laugh now. But think about.

Not much heat with a Tesla Semi. The motors are cooled.

    • @douglee4687

No, the three 500 HP motors turn into generators and recharge the battery. There is some heat produced from the current flow, but negligible compared to the wasted energy of a Jake brake and air brakes.
Consider, the semi has 1,500 HP of braking capacity with zero wear and tear on the motor.
