savvysubu I have a recording of Dr. BMK singing Akshaya Linga Vibho where the 'Vibho' never quite reaches mel shadjam. My intention is not to disrespect the great legend; however, we must acknowledge that the legends are legends because of their knowledge and the way in which they have performed in the past; 'hey days' don't last forever. TNS mama was 60 when this video was posted. Before making a claim about his lack of shruti suddham or inability to evade graha bedham, I suggest that you start a modest music collection and find TNS concerts from the 70s and 80s. Even someone with as little musical knowledge as you should be able to appreciate that music. If you would like me to cite a concert for you to start with, try finding the 1979 Academy Concert with Vellore Ramabhandran, TNS,LGJ,VR concert from CS Sankarasivam sir's 60th birthday, or maybe the TNS,MSG,Sankaran concert from KGS in December '82.
Additionally, graha bedham was popularized by GNB and done fairly often by GNB and TNR back in the day. If you're going to criticize these artists, then I don't know how much of the Carnatic community would be on your side. I can probably see you making a retort about GNB's shruti suddham but GNB was also 55 years old when his life tragically ended. If he had lived, he may have seen normal voice deterioration soon after but it would have made his music no less great (to the rest of us, at least).
Finally, I would like to note that TNS sir's ragam renditions are traditional in the sense that there are no unnecessary plain notes. The gamakam associated with and the approach to each note is in complete harmony with what the great composers have demonstrated through their masterpieces. It's only the combinations and the speed that are different, but when the music has so much traditionally intricate value, so much thought, and so much genius behind it, I can't see a reason not to like it.

The great Semmangudi has rightly said in his interview that these days the popular singers do not approach the raga straight.Probably he must have had Mr.TNS and sometimes evenDrMBK in mind. Whereas when Dr.MBK could certainly do that straight he does not do that butI am doubtful about the other.

Does that RagaSuruti require that much strain? The last piece of Thiruppavai that one song by MLV is enough to support my statement-the great Nagaswaram MaestroVedaranyam Vedamurthy has done that very crisply bringing forth the essence of that raga with the kirthana Geethathmu-How sweet it is?It has suffered alot 9n the hands of TNS Sorry for being a little harsh

Will u kindly enlighten me whether the name of the Raag is SURUTTI or Suratti ? We used to call this Raag as Surutti only, for the last six decades.
Anticipating your permission, I have given a link to this wonderful recital of alapana in my blog ragampadunga subbu rathinam

@savvysubu TNS is 60+ years old now. He has been giving concerts for nearly 50 years now. Try as he may, it is still a bit difficult for him to control his voice. If you can't see the brilliance of his ideas beyond his struggle to stay on shruti, then I do not think it is appropriate to call yourself a rasika of Carnatic Music. Also, if you would like recordings of TNS that you so boldly claim do not exist, I will give you over 150 concerts worth.

    who is on Mridangam?

    • @dearmrkiran
      @dearmrkiran 3 роки тому

It seems to be Thanjavur Sri R. Ramamoorthy, to TNS's right. A notable disciple of Thanjavur Sri. Bairavam Pillai and Thanjavur Sri. Vaidyanatha Iyer.
Unable to identify the other Mridangam Vidwan (the left hander).

The other mridangist is Vidwan Sri Ramachandran, son and disciple of Vidwan Thanjavur Sri Ramamoorthy.

@savvysubu But seriously man, if weird, folksy crap soothes you more than real Carnatic Music, there is a beautiful rendition of "Emi Sethura" by BMK. Just awesome stuff. Check it out. Nothing at all against BMK; he is also a genius. But if you, sir, are going to call a Sangeetha Kalanidhi's music unmusical, then you should abandon all hopes of ever performing, understanding, or even properly listening to Carnatic Music. TNS has graduated every test and surpassed ones that never existed.

I think it's funny that you think Dr. BMK is more traditional or 'straight' than TNS. But that's just a personal amusement. Mainly, what I wanted to say was this: just because he does Grahabedam does not mean the rest of the alapana was not straight, traditional Suruti, with some freshness added from his own musical perspective. Grahabedam is probably an expression of his personality - he is interested in intellectual music. Just because it wasn't part of Semmangudi's doesn't make it improper.

Without getting into the who is better TNS or BMK argument, don't you think you are contradicting yourself? Calling something 'folksy crap' and 'beautiful rendition' in the same sentence is quite remarkable!

@Rsqr1709 : Hi, what happens in the end might have been musical to some. Yes, I understand the intricacies of griha bedam. I guess we can all reach our own conclusions. I hold on to mine.. By the way, has TNS ever performed any concert with no bedam in shruti? (including this one- surati without shruti shuddam- that is rhyming).. Let's talk about intricate concepts like shruti bedam after he graduates to that. Comparing with Dr. BMK???? His shruti shuddam was never ever in question..

Not so savvy after all. Shruthi bhedam is a perfectly permissible part of manodharmam and BMK has also done plenty of that, like every other musician. The basic etiquette as a rasika would be to eschew comparisons as every musician is unique and at the same time human. At one stage when I was decades younger, I used to find BMK's mannerisms funny, till I grew up and learnt to appreciate his erudition. Both TNS and BMK are erudite and there is no need to put down one to elevate the other. So can we be polite here please, without exhibiting our ignorance and bad manners???

SURATI RAGAM not surutti or suratti

  • @savvysubu

I would like to cite this as the worst rendition of this raga ever rendered. Usually, people who attempt a raga like this can do a decent job, or else they restrict themselves to practice. There are several younger singers/ instrumentalists who can do justice to this raga.
